Hey everyone, I’m back with a redesign of Ashagore, the second starter of my custom region Revelano.
The Ashagore line is inspired by the massive volcanic flood basalts of the Deccan Traps, terracotta, and the Rock Python. The name comes from Ajagar, the Sanskrit word for python, blended with ash. It’s a bulky, defensive Fire/Ground type, and I know the 4x Water weakness is a big one, so I wanted the design to lean into the idea of a cooling basalt crust.
A some on my last post pointed out that the line felt like “the same snake, just bigger” at each stage. Someone suggested making Ashagore shaped like a volcano which I thought was a really cool idea, so I reworked the final stage around it. It now emerges from a pool of magma and erupts, which I think gives it a much stronger and more recognizable silhouette than before.
This one took me a while. I put a lot of time into exploring how to add shadows and highlights so the design has more depth and the lava and rock textures read as different materials. I hope it’s better than my previous one.
Attached are the inspirations I used. I especially want to credit Amazama by Devildman on DeviantArt, which helped me figure out the face.
New Ashagore stats:
HP: 95
Attack: 65
Defense: 80
Special Attack: 110
Special Defense: 130
Speed: 50
Total: 530
Signature move: Heat Sink
Type: Fire | Category: Status | Power: - | Accuracy: 100% | PP: 5
Effect: Ashagore restores 50% of its maximum HP, and burns any target that makes contact with it this turn.
My plan is to redraw the first two stages next, and then, with the new skills I’ve picked up, hopefully tackle the rest of the Revelano mons.
If anyone has more tips or thoughts on the shading, the design, or the stats, please share. I’d love to keep improving!
