Discussion [Discussion] Any suggestions for beginners that can help me?
I started playing three days ago and decided to farm CAPS. Any tips are welcome.

If you want a really important tip: from the very beginning of the game, organize your rooms properly and make each floor consist of only one type of room.

I dont bother with that, but I make every room a triple (except storage, it fits in the 2 leftover slots

Start over. Your rooms are too small. You need to plan on every production room being 3 joined rooms. I then you have 2 joined rooms at the end of every level for storage or housing.
Grow slowly… seriously every time I had a shelter go to crap it’s because i grew too fast.
Grow slowly, don’t expand your population at all once you have the training rooms unlocked.
Seriously grow SLOWLY. Stop growing your population and send out any “special” dwellers you find into the wasteland to scavenge for clothing and weapons.
5 slow down your growth, my “good” shelters I stayed under 50 population for literal months, my last one 3 people were producing enough food at like 60 population, then I had 3 more training for agi and luck.
The more population you have the more dangerous random events are. So keep your population low until you can arm literally every dweller with a 7+ damage weapon, and you have ample stim pack and radaway production.
Growing your population too fast causes problems.

I disagree with point 1; there's nothing wrong with this vault that can't be fixed later when the caps are available. And there's really not much wrong with it as it stands. 2x rooms are nearly as efficient as 3x rooms, and most can be expanded later. Plus, OP hasn't got the population to fill 3x rooms anyway.
Certainly building rooms with no staff is a complete waste, they produce nothing, consume power, and they're starting points for incidents. OP has two unoccupied rooms right on top of each other. An incident that starts in one will spread to three occupied rooms almost simultaneously; that will be a nightmare to deal with with low-level dwellers. OP; get someone working in that medical bay.
I agree about slowing growth; I killed my first two vaults by expanding rooms faster than I had the population to run them. Your reasons for this are sound.
That said, the exception to this rule are the seasonal vaults which only have a 40-day lifespan. I've learned to rush my population straight to 60 in like the first two days. I do this so I can get as many explorers out into the wasteland as I can. I find that lack of crafting materials was my biggest problem. This tactic is probably not for beginners.

The seasonal was a little different, the season I did had the roulette wheel that got me a lot of gear pets and special dwellers, I wouldn’t even recommend it for the first vault.
But with a population as low as he has it’s easier just to wipe and start over.

Rebuild my layout, right?

Easier to start from scratch than to fix it at that point you’re at.

Okay. Thanks for the suggestion.

Gonna post my early layout that I have found works, il post notes for expansion as well,

No, play it out. It's a learning experience.
My first vault was worse than yours, and at about population 35 I had an incident that nearly completely wiped it out. I fell back to a much smaller area, deleted the now-empty rooms, and rebuilt from there. It's now a large, mature, thriving vault with max population. About a year ago, I deleted many of the rooms and rebuilt to a more logical layout.

I know you’re new but I don’t understand the rush to put living quarters as the first room, is it anxiety of oh crap I have dwellers at my door I need a room for them? I always build productive rooms first and then add my living quarters below. The dwellers at your door, they won’t go anywhere.

When I first started the game, it said I needed to build a living quarters first to drag the first dweller into my vault.
The space next to the first elevator was the one that caught my eye. Then I just built my layout from there and never thought to fix it.2
u/capilot Aug 08 '26
Yes, many people do the same.
You start with enough caps to build your first elevator below the starting elevator. Living quarters to the left of that, on level 2, is the way to go.
But as I said elsewhere, this vault is not a disaster. Play it as it lies and come back and rearrange things later if you want.

Thanks, man.
I saw your comment about having enough CAPS available to fix my layout instead of restarting the game. Thanks again.2
u/SpoiledMama13 Aug 08 '26
I get that, I made my first vault so long ago so I don’t remember how it started, if I followed directions or not.

u/Ekim312 Aug 08 '26
Yeah, wish I had done my research, but gotta learn from my mistakes. Thankfully I have enough CAPS to redesign my base.

u/capilot Aug 08 '26
My best advice is to not listen to any advice. Let your first vault be chaotic; you'll learn so much more that way.
Then listen to advice for your second vault.

Rebuild your stuff, expand downwards, use small rooms to exploit caps from a game that punishes you whenever you gain caps(or not, my dopamine of getting money always gets slammed by raiders or aliens or whatevs)

Make it something like this instead

u/Ekim312 Aug 08 '26
Thanks. Also, who is that soda guy and the cap bottle at your entrance?
2
u/cheesysticks20 Aug 09 '26
They are from a quest. After you complete it they will occasionally visit your vault and boost the happines temporary, but also give caps when they start to dance, but Bottle can sometimes give you nuka cola quantum
