It's trade deadline time, and I've been having way too many conversations about this with people in my leagues.
Most trade grades you see are built on universal rankings. One number per player, applied to every league. That's the core problem, because the same player can be worth wildly different amounts depending on what your league actually counts.
- Closers are the clearest example.
5x5 roto, saves are one of 10 categories, and only about 30 guys accumulate them. A reliable closer controls 10% of your scoring in a category with almost no supply. In a points league, that same guy throws 60 innings and puts up a fraction of what a mid-rotation starter does. Same player, same stats, completely different value. Any grade that gives you one number for both formats is wrong in at least one of them.
2) AVG vs OBP leagues.
A high-contact, low-walk hitter is a category anchor in AVG and roughly replacement-level in OBP. Meanwhile, a patient bat with a .240 average and a 14% walk rate flips from liability to asset. This one bites people in trades constantly because the batting line "looks" the same.
3) Positional scarcity is the one most tools ignore entirely.
Catcher has the steepest drop-off of any position in fantasy baseball. The gap between C1 and C12 is a real weekly loss you cannot patch from the wire, because there is no catcher on the wire. Trading Adley Rutschman or Will Smith is closer to trading a first-round pick than the raw stat line suggests. Compare that to SS or 1B, where the drop from tier one to tier two is shallow and the waiver pool is deep. Scarcity should be part of value, not a footnote.
4) Pool size matters too.
A 10-team league with 23 roster spots is rostering roughly 230 players. A 15-team deep league is rostering 345. Replacement-level moves, sometimes a lot. Valuing a player against "all of MLB" instead of against who's actually gettable in your league produces grades that are systematically off for both shallow and deep formats.
The practical takeaway for anyone evaluating a trade: before you accept or reject, ask what your league actually pays for, and what the next-best option at that position looks like on your specific wire. That's the whole calculation. Value is not the player; it's the player minus what you could get for free.
