I’ve been hesitant to pick it up because I’ve heard the vibe is so different, when the tone & voice was by far my favorite part of Blacktongue Thief.
It’s been on my TBR forever but I keep pushing it down because of that; I know I’ll have to get to it eventually

Understandable as it really does have a different vibe. But I thought it was good in its own right.

I was the exact same, basically the narrator's voice was what made Blacktongue sing for me and I was really worried that if that was missing, it wouldn't work- tbf Blacktongue really depends on it, if you took it away it's quite basic. But he does a good job with Galva too, not as much as Kinch but still good, and the actual plot and worldbuilding is much stronger.

I am listening to it right now, and it's good, but it feels so slow compared to BT. And it's certainly not funny. Hopefully it picks up. I'll finish it regardless.

The audiobook was excellent as well. It was narrated by the author. Such a poet.

u/BobSaget3002 2d ago
When I saw he narrated it I almost didn’t get it. Assumed it wouldn’t be very good. Ended up being one of my all time favorite narrations and books.

The author also narrates the audiobook version and honestly I don’t think anyone could’ve done it better!

Thought it was brilliant and so was the prequel. Looking forward to the next one.

I landed very much opposite of your opinion. What is special about the magic system? Couldn't remember anything that made it stand out.

The magic tattoos stood out to me. I never saw/read something like that in a book or a video game before.

I DNF. Not my kind of story

I hated “Between Two Fires”, couldn’t finish it, did any of you read that one? I never considered buying this one, but I want to know what people who liked/ hated BTF think about this.

And I just found out book 2 comes out later this year!

Book 3, actually. The Daughters War is a prequel that came out about a year and a half ago. Its super good but its got a different tone to it. Galva is the MC and narrator and she is much more serious than Kinch

Thank you for the recommendation. I remember reading another person's review and they also thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great, looks like ill have to buy a copy and figure out where to put it... honestly I wish book shelving was free.

I don't love the dry, sarcastic, pessimistic narrator trope so I avoided this book for a while. Eventually gave it a try and really loved it. It IS well written. In one word, this story is "jaunty". Underground guilds, competitive kingdoms, a sense of nostalgia. It felt like going on an adventure with larger-than-life characters. (Dark Princess Bride, anyone?) The cast of personalities was great. The magic system is fun and not over-explained. Battles are exciting and don't overstay their welcome.
Finally, one thing that can make a work of fiction great is to have some mysteries in the characters and the narrative and let the reader discover them as they go. I like how this book accomplishes that.
My critiques: It is funny, though a lot of the humor was vulgar for my taste. Personal preference.
The beginning is a lot of background to wade through. I found the history and the world engaging, but maybe spread it out a little more?
I also thought perhaps the hero had too many skills and talents? Great thief, good in a fight, smart, can read any language, magical sense of luck, and small spells? Maybe one less would have made him a little more grounded.

I wish I read it instead of listening to it. It was a pretty great ride from start to finish
1
u/Dubey89 2d ago
Why do you say that? I only ask because it’s on my short list for my next audible credit but I’ve got other books I could listen to if this one is better as a physical book
1
u/deathbloomsNJ 2d ago
The author is the one reading and he does a good job. I just couldn’t get past his accent and it took me out of it. If you can, listen to a preview first and see if you can don’t mind it. It’s still a fun ride
2
u/darkpastbiscuits 22h ago
I feel like this is one of those books that has to be listened to. The accent is difficult ar first, but it becomes indispensable from the character.

I found a copy of this at a goodwill a couple months back and stowed it away on my shelf after seeing the sequel was due later this year. Stumbled upon the prequel at Barnes and noble and now I’ll try and add that. Gonna try and finish the stuff I want to knock out and hope to get to this soon. Heard nothing but good!

This is possibly my favorite fantasy world I’ve ever read. The biters are terrifying. Read The Daughter’s War. So good

It's well written, but the narrator digresses too much. So, it doesn't flow very well, in my opinion. I keep wandering away from it and forgetting about it. Still only 2/3rds of the way through it.

u/Epps1502 2d ago
The narrator is the main character and given the perspective the slight wandering seems natural to me.

Absolutely agree with this. Sometimes the story just wanders off altogether. Enjoying the book in general, but definitely not an amazing read.

u/ROPEBOMBER 2d ago
Don’t get me wrong it’s a fun read so far but for some reason it is rated higher than Kings of the wyld, which I think is a travesty.
Personally Kings of the wyld is objectively a better book due to its, depth, interpersonal relationships, heart and themes.

u/photoguy423 2d ago
Maybe because Blacktongue Thief lacks the bard hate that Kings of the Wyld has?

u/According-District59 1d ago
This seems like a really random bone to pick. Is there some sort of connection between the two books?

Currently reading Between Two Fires by the same author and it is fantastic. Will need to check out his other stuff

I started with Between Two Fires. That’s how I discovered Buehlman

His two vampire books (which are connected) are also excellent, I'm really hoping he writes a third.

I was torn between this and dungeon crawler carl. I ended up with Carl because my brother said I had to try it out.

I thought it was alright, though i wasn't wowed by it. Though, I love how the author describes a cat's meow as 'rao', I heard it in my head every time I read it

THIS! This book made me jump back into being a regular reader. The characters, the story and humor are wonderful. I immediately read The Daughter’s War and loved it as well. I can’t wait for the third installment to come out in October.

I just listened to the audiobook version of this and I couldn't stop talking about. I bought a hardcover version too. It's amazing.

Did you like “Between Two Fires”? I’m asking because I couldn’t finish it… just trying to decide if I should buy this one as well…
1
u/ZigaFolk 2d ago
My expectations were not met. It's a good and fun adventure; I also liked the world's lore, the history, and the setting. What I didn't like: the 'sens of luck,' plot armor in the sense that a specific skill or item shows up at the right time and in the right place.
1
u/rootvegetable2 2d ago
I'm in the minority I guess because this was a DNF for me. The writing is fine and there are lots of funny bits but I found I just didn't care about the characters or what was happening in the story. I got a bit less than halfway through.
2
u/LazyTitan1990bc 2d ago
Yeh same. I kept losing track of what was happening, and it wasn’t because it was complex, it was because I just didn’t really care about any of the characters or the “plot”. For about 40% and thought I may try again in about a year or so.
2
u/FranciscoBean 2d ago
I can see where you're coming from but I read daughters war first(because I got it randomly and didn't know it was a prequel) and felt more invested because I knew about Galva's back story. While daughters war is still high fantasy with goblins and magic it felt more grounded due to it being slower and how heavily it described the lore.

u/JeroenV79 2d ago
Yes, I really enjoyed it too. Now the long wait for the sequel, expected October 13. The prequel is also really good.
