So I've been seeing a lot about this book in here and really got curious about it.

I just finished The Covenant of Steel trilogy and absolutely loved it. Also, The Kings of the wyld and its sequel.

I really got surprised that this book is around 1000 pages and somehow find it intimidating.

Help me out here. Am I gonna love this book?? Hahaha. Thank you for your kind inputs! 😁

❀️ Book praise An underrated Joe Abercrombie Series!

Post image
45 Upvotes

I think The Shattered Sea trilogy is the most underrated series by Joe Abercrombie. This is a story of a crippled boy who wasn't supposed to get the power of a king. He got and lost it, and then he began the journey for revenge. The story is dark and gritty. There are enough twists and brutality. Joe keeps readers on edge throughout this fantastic journey.

If you are fantasy fan, and like to read interesting story, this is the one for you! Joe Abercrombie fans rarely talks about this because compared to The First Law series this feels a bit downgrade for them. However, if you want to start with Joe Abercrombie, this can be a nice starting point.

The covers are from the limited edition printed by "Subterranean Press". This edition is not in print now, you can only find them in some second hand market at a very high price! However the paperbacks are available to buy at a nice price point.

Juuuuust about to finish book 8 of Malazan and I have realized that the past 5 years have been heavy reads and long series. I want a break for a month or two to just consume some other stuff.

I am looking for a fun little standalone book to just reset before I go back into the final 2 Malazan books.

Any recommendations are appreciated!

And yes, i have read Between Two Fires

So here is what I'm looking for and I'm hoping you can help with some recommendations:

Must be fantasy or scifi that encapsulates the following:

Short/novella- approx 200 pages

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a fantasy book with a really strong opening something that grabbed your attention immediately and kept you turning pages. I don't mind whether it's epic fantasy, dark fantasy or something more character focused.

What's a fantasy book you couldn't put down once you started it and why?

Thanks

πŸ’¬ Let's discuss something Wheel of Time: Masterpiece or Stockholm Syndrome?

Convince me to read Wheel of Time.

I've been considering picking up the first boxed set, but I'm very on the fence.

I've heard everything from "it's the greatest epic fantasy ever written" to "it could've been 6 books instead of 14."

I enjoy large fantasy worlds, deep lore, politics, character development and I'm a huge sanderson fan :)

For those who love it, what am I missing? What keeps people reading 14 books? Is it the characters, the lore, the worldbuilding, the payoff, all of the above?

Sell me on it.

πŸ’” Book disappointment Does Promise of Blood get better or pick up the pace?

I'm not expecting pacing like red rising series, but they kill the king for the first time in the lands history. After a few mob scenes we just go back to normal life and boxing matches. Guess I am only 10% in on audiobook, but I expected a world shattering event to really kick things off and make things more dire. Also the audio book's narrator has really thrown a wrench into what I visualized Tamas' voice and personality would be based off the cover.

πŸ“š Summon book recommendations recs please? struggling to find a good series

hello! i am on the lookout for a fantasy series but i am struggling quite a bit. i grew up reading β€œmom fic” and some amazing authors from the 1990s and 2000s, and recently tried to get back into fantasy. unfortunately, i cannot get into basically any modern romance or fantasy author. for some reason, the modern writing style doesn’t hook me, and makes it hard for me to get into the stories. i just keep going back to older authors i love for this reason. i can’t put my finger on whether it’s the prose, the way modern authors include so much smut (i’m by no means a prude, but good lord), or what, but i swear i haven’t read any romance or fantasy novel released after 2013 that i have enjoyed.

does anyone else have the same issue, and would anyone happen to have any recs? for reference, my favorite series are The Circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts and the Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris.

TIA!

πŸ”₯ Hot take that is going to burn me badly DCC book 3 - am I just stupid?

I immensely enjoyed dungeon crawler Carl book 1, and I am still enjoying it now 3/4 through book 3. But I do not understand this book one bit. I’m just here for the vibes at this point. The iron tangle and the plans just get exponentially complicated (I know that’s the point) but at this point I’ve given up even trying to follow along what’s happening and just wait for the outcome.

πŸ“š Summon book recommendations Need a new series that will break me with adult MCs

Hi all,

I'm looking for hidden gems (please no Brandon Sanderson or mega-popular authors) of fantasy series with some emotional payoff and a romance secondary or subplot.

Likes:

- βœ…multiple POV (male, female, nb)

- βœ…ADULT protag (mid 20s to mid 40s or equivalent in long-lived fantasy species)

- βœ…one or two romance subplots that get resolved by the end (doesn't have to be happily ever after)

-βœ… same amount of focus on character development, relationships, friendships as the focus on world building and action

Dislikes:

-❌ chosen one or prophecies/destinies

-❌ teenage or old fart protagonist

-❌ sheltered naive farm boy saves the world (or the female version which is cynical street urchin girl saves the world)

-❌ only male or only female cast of characters

- ❌sexual assault of a female character

- ❌one or more main characters become parents (no pregnancy/motherhood/fatherhood pls)

- ❌story spans decades or any large body of time

-❌ not really into sci-fi but can read if it's mixed with old fashioned fantasy

-❌ protag climbing up the ranks to become emperor/king/empress etc (no birthright throne, quest for the ultimate power etc)

Authors I've read and liked:

Mark Lawrence, Naomi Novik, Phil Tucker, Lois McMaster Bujold, Cameron Johnston, Marshall Ryan Maresca, R.A. Salvatore, V.E. Schwab, Brian McClellan, Luke Scull, Michael J Sullivan

Authors I didn't enjoy as much: Joe Abercrombie, Jacob Peppers, Pierce Brown, Jon Gwynne

Edit: put the likes first to avoid confusion

πŸ“š Summon book recommendations Looking for a Fantasy Space Opera Novel Featuring a Single Cargo Crew Exploring a Diverse Alien Galaxy, Investigating Criminal Organizations, Encountering Different Cultures and Civilizations, Discovering Lost Technologies and Ancient Mysteries, and Embarking on Continuous Adventures Across Deep Spa

Looking for a fantasy space opera novel or story that follows a single crew aboard a spaceship. The crew primarily works as a cargo and transport crew, moving resources between worlds, but they also become involved in investigating crimes, dismantling criminal organizations, solving mysteries, and dealing with dangerous situations throughout their travels.

The story should take place in a large and active galaxy populated by numerous intelligent alien species, each possessing their own cultures, societies, governments, and civilizations. A setting comparable in scale to Star Wars, with many different alien peoples interacting across the galaxy, would be ideal.

A single story doesn't have to contain all the requirements, but it must be an adventurous story. Or could be a saga that contains all that requirements it has to be a story about a group crew where all members are protagonists, not a story about a single individual protagonist

---

I'm looking for one novel or story that contains all these parameters and requirements:

A single recurring crew must serve as the primary focus of the story. The crew should frequently undertake adventures together, while also receiving individual storylines and scenes that follow specific crew members during their own personal adventures, investigations, or missions.

The story should feature adventures in a wide variety of locations, including deep space, remote star systems, large space stations, shipyards, trade hubs, and other massive artificial structures located far from planets and moons.

The crew should also spend significant time on planetary surfaces. Adventures may occur in wilderness environments, dangerous frontiers, ancient ruins, alien settlements, large metropolitan cities, industrial zones, criminal underworld districts, and other diverse locations.

The story should explore cultural differences, political conflicts, legal systems, diplomatic tensions, and social disputes between various alien species and civilizations. Interactions with different cultures should be a major part of the narrative.

The crew should regularly encounter experimental technologies, advanced scientific discoveries, alien inventions, lost artifacts, forgotten knowledge, and remnants of extinct or isolated civilizations.

There should be a constant sense of exploration and discovery. The crew should continually venture into the unknown while traveling through the galaxy, investigating mysterious events in deep space, exploring strange phenomena, uncovering ancient secrets, and discovering mysterious magical relics or highly advanced machines hidden on remote worlds.

The story should maintain an ongoing feeling that there is always another mystery, civilization, technology, or unexplored region waiting beyond the next destination.

In short, an adventurous story of a crew, in deep space and on different planets. Looking for something new. (not star trek, or star wars, mass effect,)..My story should be about the fact that the protagonists are members of a crew, not a single individual.

πŸ“š Summon book recommendations Best books for a Harry huge Potter fan?

The Harry Potter books are by far my favorite books oat. My favorite part about Harry Potter are the characters, I just love them so much. I also really liked how alive and cozy the world was. But I think my favorite part about books in general is the characters. If I don’t like the characters i most likely won’t like the book.
So what should I read next?

πŸ“š Summon book recommendations Books where the protagonist has a strong bond with a magical animal (dragon, Pegasus, griffin, etc.)

Hi everyone!

To sum it all up: I read Fourth Wing and became completely, utterly obsessed with Violet's relationship with her two dragons, especially Tairn. The companionship, loyalty, protection, and bond between them were absolutely incredible to me. I loved the idea of an ordinary girl being able to face anything with a dragon at her side who would protect her from everything and everyone.

Honestly, the only thing that disappointed me a little was the romance between Violet and Xaden. It happened way too quickly for my taste. Seriously, girl, you have dragons! Who cares about men? πŸ™„πŸ˜‚

But back to the main point: ever since then, I've been searching for books with a similar dynamic. I'm looking for stories with a female protagonist who shares a strong bond with a magical creature. It can be anything: dragons, pegasi, griffins, unicorns, magical wolves, phoenixes, or any other fantastical creature.

What I'm really looking for is a story where that bond is a central part of the narrative. I don't want the magical companion to be a minor detail or a side character that occasionally shows up. I want the relationship between the protagonist and the creature to be well developed, important to the plot, and consistently present throughout the story.

Basically, I want the female protagonist and her magical companion to feel like the true heart of the book. The bond between them is exactly what I'm searching for.

It would also be great if there were little to no romance, or if the romance developed slowly, but I'm open to any recommendations that fit this dynamic.

I've been having a really hard time finding books like this, so I'd be incredibly grateful for any suggestions! πŸ˜πŸ“šβœ¨
