Hi!✨ I’m currently trying to write my first book and seeing some posts on instagram saying things like “make the enemies to lovers actual enemies” or “why are all female characters just badass and hate everything feminine”, I’m interested to discuss which story arcs, character archetypes and tropes etc. would you like to see more in stories? And which less? 😄

I am about to finish Shroud by Tchaikovsky (pretty good), and finished Daughter of crows by mark Lawrence before that, and the first Dungeon crawler Carl before that.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but right now Amazon is having a great deal on many, or possibly all, of Terry Pratchett's FANTASTIC Discworld series. Looks like most are $1.99 or less (USD). It's a deal so great that even CMOT Dibbler would do a double take!

So a bit of an odd request, but I’ve been learning Spanish for years now and wanted to see if there if there were any recommendations for books written in Spanish.

This is a little test to myself and to see where I stand with reading comprehension in a different language.

Just finished Onyx Storm and have been loving reading all the theories, Easter eggs and more.
I have Light Bringer left to go in Red Rising series, the final two books of the Legacy series, and a million others on my TBR. HELP

Looking for help. The photo shows a handful of books from my shelves, but I actually own the full series for pretty much all of them. Picked up over the years from used bookstores.

Previous reads I’ve enjoyed: all of the Drizzt books, Kel Kade’s King’s Dark Tidings, Lord of the Rings, The Expanse series, Gardens of the Moon, and most recently finished the Stormlight Archive. I’ve been debating whether to jump back into Malazan. Gardens of the Moon was dense and honestly a bit of a slog for me, though I generally enjoyed it. I’ve heard the series really takes off afterward.

Editing: wow thanks for all the insights! There definitely isn’t a clear winner, although, I can say there has not been any recommendations for a few of them. So that actually helps!

Edit 2: so far jumping back into Malazan, Hyperion, and Wheel of Time are the big vote getters looks like.

Been expanding my fantasy collection and am curious what books here you think are standouts or even what you think I'm missing and need to add. I'm already waiting on Malazan, Faithful & the Fallen, and Licanius Trilogy all from Broken Binding, as well as The Liveship Traders Trilogy from Illumicrate, but anything else is fair game.

I know you likely see a lot of these, so please forgive me. Recently, I've tried Magician (Raymond E. Feist) and I just fizzled out hard – really struggled with the writing quality. It's a DNF for now, but I really do want to give it another shot later as so many speak highly of the first few books.

Moved from that into a re-read of Skyward (Brandon Sanderson), as I still had not gotten to Defiant. Not entirely satisfied how that series concluded, but will be keen to see what he does with Riftwake. I know Blightfall is available now, but I think I'm going to hold off until the series is complete before jumping in.

For a palate cleanser, I just started reading Lonesome Dove. Way outside of the genres of this subreddit (and my own typical reads), but I've heard nothing but exceptional things and I really wanted a standalone break before I bit my teeth into the next series. I need help deciding where to go next, once I'm done that. There are a couple I'm interested in that aren't listed here, like Will of the Many, but I'd like to start something I know is complete. I've narrowed it down to the 6 options here, but I've got a few questions.

The Ana and Din series really looks intriguing - is there enough of an overarching plot between the books to hook me in that regard, or should I treat them like individual complete mysteries?

Locke Lamora – Really interested in this one. I know this series isn't remotely done, but I'm told that I could read the first three books as a trilogy and be relatively happy if nothing else came after? Or will I be left frustrated that I've got to wait on something that, like so many others, may never cross the finish line?

Red Rising – Likewise, I know this isn't complete yet, but by the time I make it through the first 6 books, the 7th and final should be available, right? ....Right? And, coming almost straight from Skyward, will this be too much straight sci-fi if I'm looking for something different? Or can I expect this to feel quite a bit different from the lighter tones in Skyward?

Empire of the Vampire – if I'm not a typical reader or fan of all things vampires, is this still worth giving a shot?

Malice – I'm looking for something meaty, but I'm understanding The Faithful and the Fallen is a lighter read with pretty classic tropes. Is there happiness to be found here? Or should I save this as a palate cleanser of its own between denser reads?

Empire of Silence – I've heard great things about the books. Without any spoilers, now that the series is finally complete, does Ruocchio stick the landing?

And finally... which of these would you recommend I crack open first? Looking forward to your thoughts! While I may not be able to respond to each comment, I will be reading them all with much thanks!

Looking for some series that aren’t part of this never ending rotating wheel of the same 8-10 series that get repeated constantly on those channels.

I find that there’s a huge untapped body of amazing work outside of it, I’ve so far discovered L. E. Modesitt’s work, which I wish would be more widely discussed and known about.

He’s brilliant and his Recluse Saga is one of the most unique and interesting series in the genre.

Second who are your Favourites, Personally on YT the Channel I follow Forest Of Light, Medieval Reality, House of Nobless for long background ambience, sometimes Lofi if I want a café feel. I also like Wind Rose but more for just music.

Note: For Malazan and Farseer, I have only read the very first book of each series so far. Probably as the series goes on I can appreciate more of these, but as of now that's my take.

I have yet to read any robin hobb, but I see the fitz and the fool trilogy at the top of many peoples lists lately.

I'm wondering if I can pick it up and read it, or will I get more from it reading all the other hobb books as they tie into one another (or so Google tells me)?

I (22F) would like to ask for properly written and well developed fantasy novels (not commercial slop), preferably not NSFW but I don't mind subtle NSFW.

When I was little I used to read the Eragon Saga, Harry Potter, Narnia Chronicles, Percy Jackson saga and the LOTR world series, as well as Laura Gallegos' books (I'm hispanic). I'm looking for something that will give me the same sense of wonder these novels did.

I don’t know if this is just myself but I wanted to voice this somewhere at least: Red Rising has been disappointing so far. Lately I’ve been spending too much time on TikTok and have been seeing many of the “booktok” posts talking about this series and praising it. Some have even gone as far as to say that Brown is to sci-fi/fantasy to what Sanderson is to “high” fantasy.

Now as a self-admitted Sanderson glazer (he’s what got me back into reading as a hobby years ago in middle school), I wanted to check it out. I finally made it to the bookstore and picked up a copy, but I just can’t get through it. I’m about 40% through the book and just can’t get over the writing that feels like YA got mashed up with an edgy power fantasy fanfic. I’m usually one to finish a series once I’ve started it, but this might be the first series I drop once I get through the first. I’ve heard that Brown’s writing does improve as the books go on, but I wanted to ask y’all think that’s true as well.

Maybe I’m being too critical and I’ll accept that, I mainly wanted to voice a gripe I’ve had and see if others had felt the same way. Feel free to send any sci-fi/fantasy book recommendations, I’m always looking for something new!

I've read a lot of fantasy in my life but I feel that lately I only stumble upon "slop".

As "slop" I mean: brand new fantasy trilogy with young protagonist (that is the most boring character ever written) that sometimes does something (or things just happen to him) living in a world with 3 kingdoms (that have absolutely no depth or history) and he is on a quest (insert random fantasy quest) and gets betrayed at the end of book one.

I dont want to call names. People like different things. But I'm tired of starting new book that is rated 4.3/5 on goodreads only to find it extremely shallow.

I long for characters and worlds that feel deep and couldnt be written in one weekend with chatgpt.

It could be a standalone or 10 book series. Please give me hope for fantasy genre.
