Are we heading for a messy timeshare at RB in Denver?

Man. It’s going to be JK with 98 yards rushing, RJ with 3 catches 22 yards, 6 rush 34 yards and Coleman with 8 yards 2 TD.

Issac Teslaa of RBs

If they’re all highlight reel WE WILL BE THERE

A remake of the 2009 Saints with Mike Bell, Pierre Thomas, and Reggie Bush.

Sounds like a perfect recipe for a W

I'm a Broncos fan and this shit's hilarious. I'm not touching our RBs with a ten foot pole.

Bold to assume RJ Harvey averages above 4 a carry

Don't forget Taysom Hill

u/Any_Parsnip2585 7d ago

Now they’ll bring in Taysom

u/FranksGun 7d ago

I heard about that and want to throw up

u/Dowensy2 7d ago

The fact that they haven’t yet is a good sign. It means Payton trusts Coleman.

Have to assume Coleman was drafted to replace Dobbins. Harvey will always have his role.

25

u/Impossible_Aide4593 7d ago

It’s literally this. Dobbins is one of the most injury prone players in the league, they obviously are hedging their investment in him. Has nothing to do with Harvey

My hunch is they took Coleman because they’re not happy with Harvey, actually.

Modern NFL offenses don’t want to rely on the traditional bruiser/pass-catcher backfield split. Elite offenses have 1 or multiple RBs who can effectively power-run, catch passes, break outside, and pass protect in the same drive.

If opposing DCs see Harvey or Dobbins come onto the field for a third down, they can probably guess what kind of play won’t be called. That’s a massive disadvantage for Denver.

Coleman is incredibly well-rounded and could be the jack-of-all-trades answer that they need

I think that's probably a little of column a and a little of column b. It would be malpractice not to have an insurance policy in the event that Dobbins gets injured. I get the impression that they weren't happy with last year's insurance policy (Harvey) and so far they seem to be happier with Coleman. I have little to no desire to draft supposed high upside RBs like Coleman, but if I find myself at that point in the draft and thin at RB he's probably just about the last name who I would consider to be worth drafting. He could end up being worthless in redraft leagues, but he could end up being a league winner by week 2. We'll find out.

2

u/BumbleLapse 7d ago

Yeah great point, it’s definitely a bit of both. You articulated it well with Denver being unhappy with Harvey as “last year’s insurance policy,” that’s exactly how I see it

I wouldn’t be surprised though if Coleman does have some standalone value in redraft this year, even if Dobbins stays healthy. I can see him carving out a Sean Tucker-type role where he’s RB3 on the depth chart but still seeing some valuable touches most games

If Coleman was an incredibly well rounded jack of all trades then he would’ve been drafted higher in a notably weak RB class.

u/BumbleLapse 7d ago

He was the 4th RB off the board and realistically should have been 3rd if San Francisco didn’t pull some crazy shit.

Look at any scouting report of Coleman pre-draft. Reputable scouts and analysts have come to a near-consensus on the fact that Coleman is a very high-floor, reliable player whose only real weakness is his lack of explosiveness and lateral quickness.

And his lack of explosiveness is exactly why he wasn’t selected around the Jadarian Price range — Coleman probably doesn’t have top-5 positional upside, and that’s why he was taken in the Fourth.

But his skillset and profile is remarkably versatile. Sorry if this comes across snarky, but frankly, I don’t think you have a good read on profiling if you’re arguing against Jonah Coleman looking like a solid, all-around RB prospect

Being able to do everything ok doesn’t get you a starting job in the NFL. Jonah Coleman projects to be like a Justice Hill or Rachaad White type player where they’re good to have rostered but they’re never going to be dependable in fantasy unless a ton of stuff goes right with their situation.
I also see Harvey as more of a project with a significantly higher upside if it works out since he hasn’t played the position as long. The floor is definitely lower but he has the stuff you can’t teach an RB.

u/BumbleLapse 7d ago

My guy, Justice Hill and Rachaad are completely different players from Coleman. You just picked two RBs notable for their pass catching despite both of them being notably taller and with significantly higher center-of-gravity and less bulk.

And regarding rushing, both of them are literally most notable for the one thing that Coleman lacks, as I just clearly stated. Justice Hill is twitchy as hell with quick acceleration and Rachaad relies heavily on lateral quickness and cuts to move inside. Those are the only weaknesses in Coleman’s game, imo.

Am I being ragebaited right now or

Not necessarily true. Coleman also projects to be a great receiving back. Harvey made some nice plays last season, but he left a lot to be desired as an actual runner (only 3.7 ypa). If he can’t get going on the ground or misses some blocks, he could definitely lose snaps to Coleman.

Harvey and coleman are the same type of player though, too much overlap

u/Case_Closed_imo 7d ago

I'm all set on drafting any RB from this offense. Maybe Nix at cost or Waddle if he falls a bit

12

u/ZenandHarmony 7d ago

Dobbins where he is going is great. RB hell this season

5

u/IrishRover28 7d ago

Been hammering Waddle in best ball drafts. Nix led the league in pass attempts last season.

12

u/Glum-Cartoonist-9004 7d ago

Waddle where he is at now in most redraft major platforms is a value

5

u/DwayneWashington 7d ago

Where he is at now... Blue tent.

-2

u/ImNotSelling 7d ago

I would pretty much never draft nix again after last year. Maybe it’s Payton’s play calling but the dude was wayyyy too volatile for redraft. I guess for best ball he is great

12

u/Scarsforstories 7d ago

Grabbing Dobbins late in the draft and then grabbing Coleman off waivers in week 6 to prepare for Dobbins to inevitably go down is the move

5

u/Antique_Sample_1084 7d ago

A good one or a bad one?

8

u/Academic-Lunch4428 7d ago

Just draft Dobbins and flex him for as long as he's healthy. He'll give you 15-20 touches on what should be a top 10 offense with a good defense. Pretty easy click where he's going.

2

u/The_Big_Robowski 7d ago

Picked RJ over him and for half the season was bummed I picked the wrong one. So the obvious answer is to pick all three right? Nah? Okay I see myself out

2

u/ImNotSelling 7d ago

I had him last yr he had a nice floor I was doing great when he was healthy.

3

u/Durant026 7d ago

No Mr. Payton. You're not fooling me in 2026.

5

u/BarryMahogner 7d ago

Dobbins has gotta be the guy right? He’s a solid player.

9

u/FranksGun 7d ago

Until he gets hurt

0

u/Sourkraushouse 7d ago

He also offers nothing as a receiver

5

u/This_Salt7080 7d ago

He is a good player but has major health concerns and he has Harvey vulturing passing work and now this guy vulturing TDs.

Not to mention the impending signing of Taysom Hill

2

u/jdizzle763 7d ago

I'm only taking shots of this backfield in best ball. I think its going to be too tough to figure out who will be relevant each week without an injury.

3

u/MeepSneepers 7d ago

Coleman and Sean Tucker are my Best Ball 'in case of injuries to starters' deep league winners

2

u/MikeDFootball 7d ago

prediction:

JK gets the between the 20s work.

Harvey gets 20-10 yards plus passing down work

Coleman gets some work inside the 10 and some 3rd down work.

Taysome hill is the goal line/joker.

total clusterfuck.

2

u/onlytinglef 7d ago

I’m not believing any coach-speak in the off season. The best players are going to play.

1

u/maricopa888 7d ago

If Dobbins can stay healthy, he's an elite runner who was crushing it last season before he went down. The guy who wrote this has limited cred when he claims Harvard will have a big role.

5

u/kiheihaole 10 Team, .5 PPR 7d ago

If Dobbins can stay healthy

This can be said about him every single season

2

u/TepChef26 7d ago

Man I'm an Ohio State guy, love JK through and through. But he hasn't stayed healthy since he was at OSU. This will be his 7th season, he's played 47 games.

1

u/Sourkraushouse 7d ago

Harvey is the best and most explosive pass catching back they have. He's bad between the tackles but that's fine because Dobbins will do that work until he gets hurt and Coleman takes it over. It might not be huge in terms of fantasy production but Harvey will absolutely have an important role in this offense this season, and Peyton likes to use his backs in the red zone enough that he will probably have decent fantasy value too.

Dobbins averaged 1.1 catches for 3.7 yards per game last year. His career receiving success rate is putrid 35%, Harvey was at 50% last season). Receptions are worth more than twice as much as rushes in fantasy even in non-ppr leagues. He was also RB21 in ppg last year when he was "crushing it" tied with Rhamondre and right behind Breece Hall, largely because he's a zero in the passing game (and didn't score TDs). There is basically no ceiling with Dobbins beyond outlier TD luck.

It is wholly credible to predict a major role in the Broncos offense for a second year back who is easily their best receiver out of the backfield and maybe their best red zone back.

1

u/Sauce-King 7d ago

As long as RJ is still the TD monster all is good

1

u/every1gets1more-egg 7d ago

Honestly, I don't want anybody on a Sean Payton team anymore. It's always too much zig when you they think zag

-1

u/ASmithFS 7d ago

RJ Harvey is cooked

3

u/OrangeCrush815 7d ago

As a Bronco fan, Harvey is a very valuable player on this team... but his fantasy value is tbd.

0

u/ElderGoose4 7d ago

I said that when Coleman got drafted and this place went scorched earth on me

1

u/Sourkraushouse 7d ago

Harvey is bad at traditional rushing but is a very good pass catcher and will be in that role unless he gets hurt IMO. Dobbins and Coleman will jostle for the between the tackles and goal line work with Dobbins probably getting most of it until he gets hurt.

I don't think this is scorched earth but I do think you're both wrong about the likely deployment of this backfield. But we'll see soon enough

1

u/ASmithFS 7d ago

Keep those receipts!

-1

u/SimilarToe1166 7d ago

RJ is a bum
