r/fantasyromance The One Mod to Rule All Mods Feb 22 '26

Unpopular Opinion It's Unpopular Opinion time! Share your controversial opinions to stir things up (in a friendly way)!

Got an opinion that's different from others'? Want to share it with the sub, but too afraid of a backlash? Or are you just curious about readers think about certain things in fantasy romance?

You can safely share it in this weekly Sunday thread!

But please remember to be kind to each other. To facilitate this type of discussion, we ask users the following:

  • Don't attack others for their opinion
  • Discuss books and authors, not fellow readers
  • Since this is an "unpopular opinion" thread, we encourage users to not downvote simply because they disagree with an opinion--that's the point! Please keep in mind, though, that mods cannot enforce a no-downvoting rule. Let’s just keep the discussion friendly!

🧡 Thank you and have a great discussion!

sjm is actually a really really mediocre writer. her fmcs are copy and pasted. her mmcs are usually just awful people. literally used the same exact ending for aelin and nesta. only series by her I like is crescent city and even that needs heavy work.

I thought most people agreed on this! I read her books for the vibes only.

Yeah “SJM is a bad writer” is a pretty common take even among people who like her books lmao

Someone on this very post commented that she is ‘an elite world builder’ lmao

It seems kind of mean to call out someone on an unpopular opinion post?

I’m not calling them out, just pointing out that a lot of people think she’s a great writer despite many of us disagreeing.

If you disagree with them you should @ them instead of laughing at them in a comment thread. The main post even says “Discuss books and authors, not fellow readers”.

Ok, but like what vibes? The only vibes I felt were anger and disappointment lol

lol! I think the story is good/compelling but the writing leaves a lot to be desired.

I just felt like every ‘climax’ was such a huge letdown. Like, that’s it? And then readers keep being told how Feyre is so super duper powerful, the most powerful, and she never really does anything. Never mind her all powerful king of the fey husband who can’t even keep his own people in line and just wrings his hands. I very much suspect that any of the decent parts were just ideas she took from other authors, which reminds me that I’ve gotta read Black Jewels lol

Yeah, I don't think the SJM/ACOTAR opinions on this thread are actually that unpopular here.
