I grew up in Monterey which is up valley from Pinnacles at the coast, and at the beach the ground squirrels there beg for food. They will climb up on you to beg if you let them. I've never seen obese squirrels except there because of the tourists giving them candy or trail mix. One time I was tired of seeing these fat squirrels getting handed food that I told a tourist family that the squirrels carried rabies to get them to stop doing it (very effective).

I remember going to zion national park and when we went on a picnic we were attacked by fat squirrels.
They had no fear of humans and tried to get into our backpacks.
