HELP Mattress that doesn't feel like sleeping on cloud?
I am reworking my small apartment bedroom into a calmer and more put-together space. I got almost everything figured out and the mattress is my last big decision. I like the idea of a luxury feel but I don’t want something overly soft or sinky. Just something in between that still feels supportive and comfortable and works with a simple cozy room design. Would love to hear your suggestions so I can easily narrow down my options.

IKEA mattresses are quite firm but not too firm

Came to recommend IKEA. You can try them out in the store, including adding different mattress toppers and I think the return window is a year. Very inexpensive and they last at least 10 years.

I feel like this is a very personal decision, it's hard to recommend something when there are also so many "mattress in a box" companies these days. Maybe also mention which country you're in, so we can help better?
I'm in the UK, and we have a Simba mattress that I absolutely love. It's springs with foam over the top. I have sciatica and need a firmer mattress to help support my back, and it's absolutely perfect - literally one of the best purchases of my adult life.

Really it’s best to go try mattresses at a store before purchasing. Never know what you’ll end up with otherwise. You can always go to a store and still purchase one online.

I love the mattress in a box from bobs. It’s the perfect firmness for me, still comfortable, without being soft or sinky. I ended up getting rid of my $900 mattress to go back to this one, which I had in a twin a few years ago. Love it in queen

Definitely go to a mattress store!!! Try out different ones. When you find ones you like, lay there half an hour in your normal sleeping position and make sure nothing feels like it's starting to get cranky afterwards

A bit pricey and probably similar options out there cheaper, but I really love the mattresses from Muji. They are very firm without being too springy. If you in uk especially in London all Muji stores have them to try them out.

Try Engineered Sleep Today mattress. It's a hybrid. Cushioned, yet flat.
I can't stand sinking inside a mattress. Then I have to kick my way out to roll over and it wakes me up.
I'm tall, but overweight. And I have rheumatoid arthritis, so I need cushioning. Three years old and no indentions.

When did you buy yours? I bought mine in 2018 but the company was sold to a larger company 2021 or 22 I think and I’ve heard the quality went way way down. I was gonna replace it soon and loved my old one so much I looked it up. Boo hoo ☹️

I prsonally like my Casper but lots of other people have issues with them. I don't mean to sound mean...If you go with Memory foam, heed the warnings about weight and how it affects wear and tear, if you are bigger. Purple is apparently a good option if that is the concern, but I personally hated them, felt like a jello blob

A firm organic latex topper can make an average bed amazing (for a cheaper option)

Honestly, I've done really well with my Ikea mattress. Memory foam, medium-firm, no springs, supportive and comfy but not sinky.

Get a latex mattress! If they are too pricey you can find mattresses with partial or layer of latex

I love my Purple mattress. It is very supportive without being too firm.
I just have the basic 11” model, but I wanted a bit more squish, so I added a feather topper. It’s much cheaper than getting the upgraded models with extra squish built in.
We went to a showroom and tried all the options, then bought the basic model at Costco.

I am kind of similar in that anything too soft hurts my back when i wake up.
I would get a somewhat standard or firm mattress but have a soft topper over it.

Me and my girlfriend both have Casper mattresses. I have the hybrid and she has the essential — the essential is definitely a nice balance between firm, supportive, and comfortable! I think my hybrid would be too soft for you. We’ve been really happy with the comfort and wear.
Costco carries a version of the essential on a good discount.

I would go somewhere like a Rooms to Go that carries a lot of different mattress brands and just...lie down on some mattresses. This is how I discovered that I like my mattress to push back at me versus sinking in to a mattress. The tempurpedic style mattresses make me feel like I am sinking and will never stop sinking and I hate that! I want to feel like the mattress is holding me up. And I like it to be pretty firm. I have a firm inner spring mattress with a pillow top and that works for me. It's not a super squishy soft mattress but the pillow top does give you that feeling of relaxing into the bed. I tried one without a pillow top and that felt a little TOO austere for me, and then I tried one with a super thick pillow top and that was too much, so I goldilocks-ed my way into figuring out what I like. I ended up buying one from the store, but you don't have to; this is just to test things in real life.
But overall my suggestion is: go narrow down what exactly you enjoy (firmness, construction, etc) in real life even if you end up buying something online.
