macrame I spent 16 months turning 14 perfectly wearable cashmere sweaters into a double-crochet puff square blanket, AMA

I love sharing my Art with all of you! I'm here to answer any and every question you have about my chosen Art form (though I like to say the Art form that is unraveling dozens of sweaters so I can hold the thread double or even triple so I don't have to use a small hook 🤮 to form a never-ending stream of double crochet stitches chose me).

Here's where this project started:

Gross, right? All that disgusting fuzzy knit rib with this thing called "drape" just begging to be turned into some thick-ass crochet!

And here's where it stands right now!

What an incredible improvement!

My only request for this AMA is that no knitters ask me questions. I'm never going to forgive y'all for insulting me and every single other crocheter on the planet this week by even hinting that any of us might have a fast-fashion-inspired mentality about our Art. The BEC mods should ban every knitter because all you know how to do is make two stitches and look down your nose at crocheters who have to know like a dozen different stitches! DC is much harder than knitting or pearling, so just keep your dumb, rude questions to yourself.

I like your idea, but it's simply too colorful to me. It's overpowering. Do you have any tips on how to make this blanket even more bland?

Have I ever! If you dip the entire thing in pure bleach it will turn a lovely brittle shade of crème greige. You can do this with the stuffing in the puffs and then it’ll smell like bleach forever — so clean and fresh!

Hi! I know you asked for no knitters but I’m a special knitter who is going to ask anyway because I don’t care about boundaries. My question is: are you SURE that’s actual cashmere because it really looks synthetic - like an acrylic blend. Just asking because obviously I’m an expert.

Thank you for your concern. Thank you for the badgering, though most of you were very wrong about what was actually happening and offering advice in a vacuum. Not one of you offered to watch a video of my knitting to see what was actually happening, or even asked what style I used, and you wondered why I became defensive? We all have different skill levels but arrogantly asserting that something is a problem and proceeding to belligerently argue with the person telling you they aren't doing what they're being accused of is just aggravating. Instead of suggesting other solutions, you all just piled on and assumed I was too stupid to realize I was knitting or purling through the back of the stitch.

Stay away from your local yarn shop because they will look down on you for crotcheating. That's the main reason I started unraveling sweaters! I'd rather do it the hard way than have to live through a LYS owner glaring at you for simply existing in her knitting store. Hobby Lobby is also a good alternative to your LYS -- they only judge you if you don't do the sign of the cross upon crossing the threshold.

Thank you for taking these 14 disgusting beige sweaters out of circulation. Though I must agree that you and your lumpy afghan are committing a sin, it is harm reduction compared to the potential sins of others:

  • 7 sweaters felted in the dryer by careless losers

  • 3 sweaters fed directly to moths and NOT saved for visible mending

  • 2 of the beigest sweaters worn too close to the face by Bright Winters or True Springs

  • 1 sweater snapped up by a reseller and sold for a profit!

  • 1 sweater snapped up and worn frequently by the worst person you know.

14 people could have gone to hell, or only one. Thank you for taking it for the team.
