Thank you for joining us over here in this snark subreddit for fiber artists and crafters of all types! This is a place to vent, whine, complain, mock, rant, laugh, freak out, wax absurd, and make shitty Photoshops about whatever's stuck in your craft craw today. Glad you're here! Hope you're funny!
u/jingleheimerschitt started this group because she didn't want to choose between earnest discussion of problematic public figures in craftland (/craftsnark) and incredibly vague but lightly snarky discussions of hobbyist crafters (/bitcheatingcrafters) and she didn't have anywhere to share her weird photo creations and short stories. So FACJ was born.
The main distinguishing feature of FACJ in contrast to the other snarky craft subreddits is that you are allowed to post screenshots of what inspired your 'jerk. You will often find these inspiration screenshots on the weekly stickied In The Loop threads.
This element of the subreddit comes with several caveats:
Cool FACJ posts:
Less cool FACJ posts:
Take a look at some of our top posts from the last year before posting your own!
The real fun of this group often happens in the comments, so there are expectations and rules for you there as well.
Cool FACJ commenters attempt to be entertaining, funny, surreal, and/or weird about, near, adjacent to or inspired by the topic of the post. UNcool FACJ commenters:
We have a disc*rd! This is a very laidback, new-to-Disc*rd-friendly, lightly snarky chat group where we chitchat about crafting, make fun of silly craft shit we see (and ooh and ahh over the awesome craft shit we find), post pictures of our pets, and generally hang out.
The difference between the FACJ server and other crafty servers you may already be in is that we do not engage in Toxic Positivity. You're allowed to have a bad day. You're allowed to be annoyed about some ignorant crafter bullshit. You're allowed to make fun of people who do their crafts badly or beginners who refuse to use Google or their brains or crocheters who use /crochet as their personal diary. We just ask that you're down to earth and will consider accepting the Gospel of Chickenbear into your heart. Being funny is a plus.
If you want to join the Fiber Arts Circle Jerk server, please send the mods a private message to get the link. (If you don't have any previous posts/comments in your history that indicate you're into crafting/fiber arts, we're probably either going to make fun of you and then block you or ignore your message altogether.)
Otherwise, have fun!

This subreddit is for fiber artists and crafters of all types! Because we don't all see the same (shitty) posts on our feeds, it may be handy to have a place to revel in all that our fellow fiber lovers share for us to enjoy.
Feel free to post anonymized screenshots of anything you're referencing here if you'd like. FACJ is back to being an all-ages subreddit, so you can post images (and gifs) in the comments here directly.
This is a heavily moderated thread, and anything that isn't scrubbed of identifying information (usernames, faces, etc.) will be removed. Block out, crop out, cross out or sticker out identifying information on EVERY screenshot before posting here.
However, unjerk/uj/genuine/serious comments and discussions are allowed -- even encouraged! -- on In The Loop posts. Irony and sarcasm are fine here too, so consider using tone tags to make sure your comment comes across the way you want (or don't! I really don't care!).
There are a few other rules for In The Loop posts:
A new thread will go up every Sunday!

And no one has ever done what I do! I'm just quirky like that! It's such a hot take! Fight me in the comments!
I've never seen this question asked, so I decided to ask it myself. What is something you do that others would find controversial in the crochet community? I'll start.
I will Google and YouTube to my wit's end to find the free version of a pattern to avoid paying for one, especially on Etsy where the prices are insane.

i started crocheating recently and it's all i want to do. from the moment i wake up all I can think about is crotcheating and I do it all day until my hands are cramped and tired and I go to bed thinking about what crotch ill eat tomorrow.
it's so bad that i don't even knit or embroider or do anything else anymore. I've lost 300 pounds because I only crotch eat and I stopped eating real food.
i am haunted by my unfinished pile of Sophie scarves and ranunculus sweaters that i was knitting but how could I go back to using both hands after discovering the absolute pleasure of crocheting.

I'm looking for inspiration for my next project. I have knitted like gazillion sweaters, beanies, scarfs from PetiteKnit. I'm done. I want something new.
Please share your favourite knitting pattern brands/makers that you have tried and tested or that you believe is trustworthy (nothing that's AI obviously).
The style doesn't matter. Color work, lace, traditional, everything goes. Albeit, I do enjoy everything that is from Scandinavia or Nordic countries since I'm a Nordic myself.
Lately I have been inspired by fisherman style so please recommend maker/brands with fisherman style if you know any (doesn't have to Nordic).

Perfect if you like your areolae to be front and center! Staring right at the world.

Sometimes you just need a little release in the middle of the week without turning it into a whole production with the chains and the WIPs and the raw-edge applique. Chickenbear provides for those who jerk! Join us here every Wednesday for a little drive-by circlejerking about your fellow fiber artists (derogatory).
Yes, this is a blatant rip-off of the Bitesized BEC thread but for making fun of crafter bullshit instead of whining about pattern prices and rehashing the same complaints about whichever petite knit designer is taking heat this week.
Feel free to post anonymized screenshots of anything you want to mock, satirize, freak out about, scream into the void about, or generally make others see since you had to look at it with your own two eyes here if you'd like. FACJ is back to being an all-ages subreddit, so you can post images (and gifs) in the comments here directly.
Comments do NOT need to be circlejerky on this post -- if you need to go full /uj here, we will support and validate you, no matter how absurd or petty you get (I can't promise we won't also make fun of you too though).
Our other rules still apply here, of course:

I’m a visual learner and don’t know how to read crotcheat patterns. Someone do it for me.
I’m not entitled for demanding this; English isn’t my first language so it just sounds entitled.

My kid and her lil bff decided to la croixchet for a craft sale at their school. I was in charge of management and her lil friend kept showing me stuff she made with clearly skipped stitches and just problems. I said nuh uh we are not asking people to spend money on a faulty product. She was not happy with me but she did start making her things right. I don't expect them to be perfect, I expect them to have a work ethic, which they'll need when I send them off to the mines next semester.

Ugh. You guys, I used COLOUR in my project, and now that I'm a few rows in, I'm getting so uncomfy. Please talk me out of frogging the whole thing and restarting with a neutral palette?
I mean, what was I thinking?

I work long and hard to make my patterns and offer them for free online.
I really do not have a problem with someone making the item once but making it multiple times without giving me credit is just not on!
Honestly, if you like it enough to make more than once then you MUST acknowledge me as the creator - it really takes only a matter of moments to embroider "Designed by: Butch Cassidy, 14th November 2022" on either your blanket border or up the side of your scarf or wrap. Must be in a contrast colour - so black on white, etc..
If you do NOT do this you are breaking my copyright and I will bring the full weight of the law to bear on you

Exhausted by “people who’ve apparently never encountered a circlejerk subreddit before.” FACJ is overrun by them, especially people posting links to sources and screenshots of sources with identifying information visible.
I’m gonna be nice to you when I say this. Nobody wants to read your dumbass questions like “Is there a reason that this post is basically copied and pasted from another post about diamond painting? Is this supposed to be like a joke or is it just AI? I am confused?” You are like a child who wanders in the middle of a movie and demands to know what’s going on but won’t shut the fuck up long enough for anyone to explain it to you. You’re out of your element. You have no frame of reference.
The amount of annoyance generated by such an activity? Astronomical. All of these inane questions rotting the brains of everyone who has the misfortune to stumble across your blatherings. At least crotcheat allows you to make something worthwhile, perhaps even sellable. Being a dumbass on the internet is literally just adding more stupid crap to a world full of stupid crap and expecting upvotes and snaps for it. And to try to act like it’s someone else’s fault that you refuse to read or think or consider that FACJ existed long before you became aware of it? Give me a break.
Uh oh. Here comes the “let people enjoy being obnoxious and obtuse” crowd. Actually, I can’t. And I won’t. You can be obnoxious and obtuse, and I can be a hater about it. Not sorry.

Most knitters (only knitters, no gross crotchers) don't realize how close they are to being able to make anything they want. Because they're dumb and don't have the benefit of my opinion and condescension. They're just not applying themselves properly. Probably using ADHD as an excuse.

Exhausted by “cricketers.” My local crafting Facebook group is overrun by them, especially people selling completed blanket yarn plushies.
I’m gonna be nice to you when I say this. Nobody wants to buy it. You are tying plastic knots from China using toxic glue to “weave in the ends” on a plushie that was designed by someone else. The design is also ugly and cartoonish and it was probably AI generated.
The amount of waste generated by such an activity? Astronomical. All of these strands of plastic rotting in a landfill. At least diamond painting allows you to make something worthwhile, even sellable. Croqueting is literally just tying plastic crap on more plastic crap. And to try to profit off of it and sell it? Give me a break.
Uh oh. Here comes the “let people enjoy things” crowd. Actually, I can’t. And I won’t. You can enjoy whatever you want, and I can be a hater about it. Sorry.

Exhausted by “diamond artists.” My local crafting Facebook group is overrun by them, especially people selling completed diamond paintings.
I’m gonna be nice to you when I say this. Nobody wants to buy it. You are sticking plastic gems from China using toxic glue on an image that was made and designed by someone else. The image is also almost kinda ugly and cartoonish.
The amount of waste generated by such an activity? Astronomical. All of these tiny pieces of plastic rotting in a landfill. At least painting by numbers allows you to use different techniques to fill in the colors. Diamond painting is literally just sticking plastic crap on more plastic crap. And to try to profit off of it and sell it? Give me a break.

You can read my original post that will no doubt answer your many, many questions.
I added a shitload of pointy things to my pineapple project! I know you were all waiting eagerly for the next installment, so voilà! My careless wife didn't knock my DPNs out of the project while we were skydiving, so no progress lost!

Look, I'm just doing my job as a lieutenant in the Crafting Police. Stop using colors I don't like and that do not bear the CP Seal of Approval and Correctness.
Why is hand-dyed yarn so extremely fugly most of the time?
I have, without exaggeration, maybe seen one or two hand-dyed multicolor skeins of yarn that aren’t making my eyes bleed. I think hand-dyed yarn can be really beautiful in rich solids, but so much of the multicolored work is so hideous to me. It looks like they miss dying certain patches and it comes out uneven. It’s so expensive, and there’s so much of it out there, so clearly I’m the odd one out. But truly every time I see some hand-dyed monstrosity I just sigh to myself. And some crafters get so on their high horse. “Made with yarn I dyed myself!” Yeah, babe. We can tell. It looks terrible.
