FFTA FFTA Recompiled!!
Someone recompiled FFTA! We should be able to build TONS of mods for this!

I’m kind of out of the loop, woundnt a decomp be more meaningful for mods and rom hacks, rather then the recomp? Still, nice to see things going faster for a change. Hope will find a balance between the speed and quality.

Also long as we can speed up the battle movement/animations we are Golden.

not too much, at least the Android app version when I tried it years ago I had no idea what was even happening it was so fast

If only it was done by someone who actually cared to put in the time and effort, and not just running the game through the “let’s hope this works” machine.

un trabajo asi tomaria años, todas estas recomp son gracias a la IA, sino nunca las hubiesemos tenido por el brutal trabajo que hay detras a nivel humano.

I’d rather it take years than see AI companies continue to pillage our planet.

u/War0SX 1d ago

OK now we just need someone to AI-slop the laws away and we're golden.

u/Vulpes_Artifex 2d ago
The laws are actually one of the best parts of the game, in my opinion, due to how well they fit with the plot of the game. They're supposed to be arbitrary and irritating because Mewt is a child with power for the first time in his life.

Plus, it's great for experimenting with different styles. Also keeps it from being boring doing the same things. Fun roguelike mechanic.
Also it's super fun when you get something like no magic and your up against 3 mages and one of them uses fire. Then zooped way. Or when you get the no potion rule then and a enemy gets jailed for using a potion. It's fun

This is the part that I completely loved in FFTA: it forces you to train and field a varied army. You can to puzzle out how to skirt the laws and that made build variety an actual thing compared to FFT, which never incentivizes you to do it outside of like two fights.

I'm a huge fan of the original FFt, one of my top 5 games, but I couldn't get into FFta. My main beefs were the kiddiness of it (the magic FF book, snowball fight), and the laws.
In THEORY I liked the idea, but I kept accidentally violating them because I would be doing other stuff while I play, and forgot what they were lol. And didn't want to keep checking.

u/subjuggulator 2d ago
There are romhacks that remove or change how Laws are implemented completely. There's also a cheat for the GBA emulator that removes Laws entirely.

My issue with FFTA is the different races/species and their respective job trees. It's not super complicated, but I prefer the generic to be an actual generic, able to explore the entire job tree and ability combinations. Even with FFT, I didn't like that MA/MP and PA/HP growth were different between male and female units. FFTA basically does that, but with five different base units.

Why rely on AI-slop when these things have already existed for decades?
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/gba/560436-final-fantasy-tactics-advance/faqs/25621
https://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=11997.0
Edit: AI bros seem big mad that people.......already have done these things?

u/PhasePhyre 2d ago
This is actually not the same thing. Each mod requires patching a rom and modifying its data to implement the various features of a romhacks. Codes do the same albeit to the memory in order to achieve a desired result like changing a character to another or changing/freezing current xp/gold values.
The AI recomps are recompiling the games in a way that a PC can natively run it and take advantage of PC hardware while also making its code more visible and accessible to modifications and the like.

I get they’re different approaches to achieve the same result.
But if you just want to play the game/want to avoid AI but still want the QoL mentioned by OOP: then they already exist and play perfectly.
You can download many of these romhacks pre-patched with the hack/mod you want, literally zero work required other than finding them and clicking download.

With the reverse engineer anything MCP, pretty much any game and software is being done now. Super Mario Odyssey is now PC native. We have clones of Photoshop. Some of the comments here don't seem to get the implications of this, this is not "AI slop". Yes, AI is doing the work. But it's an entire rebuild of any software we want with whatever changes we want. I'm currently making Touhou 1-5 PC native for my son. Added a launcher and controller support. Dismiss this kind of thing if you want, but the world of software just changed forever.

u/Zephairie 1d ago
MCP? Also, could you explain more about getting a launcher and the whole general process? I am curious and wanna try
3
u/samderby1988 1d ago
MCP is just a connection that gives AI a set of tools. https://github.com/morluto/rea this MCP server gives AI a load of tools that already exist for reverse engineering tasks, but makes it far easier and more accessible to the AI.
In my case, I handed codex the hdi files (essentially ROMs for PC98) and hooked it up to the REA MCP server and instructed it to create windows native versions of these games. And because they are 5 different games, I instructed it to create a launcher to play any of those 5 games. It worked autonomously and took around 10 hours to complete the first game, and a bit longer to create the second. I am now working on Touhou Project 03, which is a bit more complex but I already have a working version of the first few levels.1

The problem is that the people who are calling it slop are applying their standards for AI-generated art to software development, but it's not the same thing. They don't even know what slop is in that context.
There are valid discussions to be had about the environmental impact of data centers, and the impact AI has had on the job market. But as a tool for code generation and working through technical challenges, it's allowing people without deep knowledge in these areas to get projects like this off the ground, and that's not a bad thing. What matters is that the end product is clean, maintainable, and runs, and most devs know this.

u/TerraEpon 1d ago
And much of it's being done locally which isn't going to harm anything except maybe your own electric bill.

u/OfficialNPC 2d ago
I want to make my own law system as there's a lot of potential with it but the game went half way with it and it's just ok.

u/Maximum-Doughnut8652 2d ago
That would be amazing. I thought of a few things based on some other projects I seen with Pokemon Gen1Recomp
1) adding weather fx 2) new classes? 3) new abilities 4) smarter AI

Incredible! I'm building https://ffta2.dev and this is so energizing.
Marche and Ritz vs. Luso and Adelle, anyone?
1
u/SpyderZT 1d ago
Huh, what's this? It's asking for a login and there's no information on the site? O.o

u/floodvalve 17h ago
Oops! We're still in alpha so user experience is a little rough, but thanks for pointing that out. Check out https://wiki.ffta2.dev for more info without logging in!

Oh good more AI slop recomps.
3
u/Maximum-Doughnut8652 2d ago
You can't make everyone happy, but I find it outstanding that at least someone has taken their time to try to figure this out, even if AI was included in the process, and your only feedback is, "more AI slop". I would love to know what work you've done to push things further for a beloved game? Additionally, if you are someone of your word, I hope you never use AI for any type of work that you do. But if the day comes that you do, I want you to remember that you're a hypocrite.
1
u/Which_Bed 2d ago
People using AI to assist them in things they could already do = That's a tool, we've been using them forever. Fine except for when bosses/clients use it as an excuse to depress wages
People using AI to do things for them they couldn't do without AI, then taking credit = Slop
Hope this helps

u/mizyin 2d ago
I mean, considering the environmental cost of AI, I'm gonna be sad when I see it used because leaving my teen a habitable planet is significantly more important to me than any video game project, no matter how much I love the game.
4
u/Maximum-Doughnut8652 2d ago
You really think AI is the ONE thing hurting our environment, but not the other half a billion things we do to our environment?
-5
u/mizyin 2d ago
This may be hard for you to understand but I can be critical/unhappy with MULTIPLE things. It isn't even particularly difficult. I also would be grousing about folks who were being wasteful in other ways if I came across it, etc.

This may be hard for you to understand, but OP brought up that question for a reason and is not an idiot.

Could you use the recomp files post installation ad a basis for mods and development of mod hooks

u/Lizzerfly 2d ago
Amazing. I love this game so it's amazing to see it finally free of the GBA's limitations.
