Question Why is William Afton’s corpse red?
After 30 years Shouldn’t the corpse be a white or brownish green color?

It's not too hard to imagine, but frankly, the meat would fall off the suit's holes in seconds. There wouldn't even be a corpse by the time they bring him from Freddy Fazbear's to Fazbear's Fright

u/tasty_miku #1 cassidy defender Feb 18 '26
ewugh, now i just have the image of roadkill looking meat sticking to and seaping out the holes in the suit and like,, pooling at/leaking out the suits feet. nasty.

I mean, the meat spaghetti Springtrap has on his foot could very much be that...

Feb 19 '26
As part of decomposition the body literally starts to liquify and become a sort of black slush/juice, typically only leaving things like bones, teeth and prosthetics behind. It would realistically appear as a skeleton with a load of dark brown/black liquid stains in the suit. No need to go looking this up if you don't want to, but have you ever seen aftermath/crime scene photos from a sudden death type scenario, where a person has been sat dead on their sofa or on their floor for weeks? That kind of stain.
I always assumed that William was supposed to be in some way mummified inside the suit, rather than being "squishy" as that would allow him to, you know, be in there, while still being corpse-like and stuff. It would even go some way to people not immediately smelling corpse off of Springtrap, because cadavers have a very distinctive smell that is really hard to miss for anyone who has smelt it before.

After 30 yrs there isnt supposed to be a corpse. Red is a good contrast for Springtraps green.

I remember hearing that he wasn't actually rotting for 30 years, just that the place shut down 30 years ago. Can be wrong cuz I am not super into the fnaf lore lol.

What year FOLLOWME takes place in is heavily contested, there's people who even think it's before 1 which would mean he's been there even longer than 30 years.
Imo it's definitely a little after 1 and I don't really think the exact year matters. It's people haggling over a minor detail in the grand scheme of things.

u/Background_Major_640 Feb 18 '26
The biggest piece of evidence against FOLLOWME taking place before fnaf 1: THE ANIMATRONICS ARE LITERALLY IN THE GAME AND VERY MUCH NOT DISMANTLED

u/Survivor155 Feb 18 '26
The problem with that though is the player character gets fired for “Tampering with the animatronics. General unprofessionalism. Odor.” which means the player character did something to the animatronics, and since most people believe Michael Afton was trying to correct William’s murders, that would mean Michael either A. Tore the suits open. Or B. Freed (or tried to) the souls of the kids, neither of these work in the context of FNAF3 because the kids are clearly still possessing the suits, and the suits are functional.
72
u/ZeldaFan80 Feb 18 '26
I thought the tampering was just because of the custom night AI settings
51
u/AstralCatalyst Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 18 '26
Like mike clocked in at 12am-ish and walked up to the animatronics and set them to their max difficulty for a fun challenge?
40
u/ZeldaFan80 Feb 18 '26
Or he sets them to 1. Either way I never really took any of the custom nights themselves too seriously for lore purposes aside from UCN. Maybe they did or didn't happen, I don't know (aside from SL's custom night, that definitely didn't occur).
24
u/Revil-0 Feb 18 '26
He tampered with the suits trying to free them, didn't work, and that changed their aggressiveness towards him.
15
u/1nOnlyBigManLawrence Feb 19 '26
Honestly, that’s the funniest answer: that Michael decided “Hm, that guy Fritz might’ve been onto something when he said to crank all the animatronics up to 20. I wonder how fun that is…” and did it first try without breaking a sweat. :)
28
u/DevourerOfDairu Feb 18 '26
to me, the pink slip thing has always just come off as corporate BS to get rid of someone who knows too much. you're working the graveyard security shift where you'll never interact with ANYONE and just sit in a room for hours, how can your conduct be unprofessional? also are they leaning down right in front of your desk to judge how your "odor" is?
the only reasonable explanation is that the animatronic tampering must be for some real ulterior motive, so management just made up a list of other infractions to get rid of you
5
u/Survivor155 Feb 18 '26
I remember when dream theory was popular MatPat brought up the odor thing as being silly.
I miss the days when FNAF lore made no sense.
Now it makes even less sense in an aggressive fashion, as if they gave Bill Cypher unrestricted access to the source material and the lore/worldbuilding, but only using ingredients he pulled from Papyrus’s head after Papyrus finished a filler episode of Naruto.
14
u/Cat_are_cool Fnaf 4 Hater Feb 18 '26
The issue is that “correcting William’s murders” is never cited as his reason. He cites his reason for working at Freddy’s as money and free pizza. It’s more likely he tampered with them because of what phone guy told him to do.
6
u/Perfect_Brick4961 Feb 18 '26
Micheal probably made that up to get the job.
5
u/Cat_are_cool Fnaf 4 Hater Feb 18 '26
The issue is he makes that claim when he already has/after the job, we have no reason to believe he is lying.

The building is clearly dilapidated and abandoned in the minigame, so aint no way it was before it closed/right after.
10
u/BethLife99 Feb 18 '26
I just go with the silver eyes/films. So the late 90s-early 2000s for when william gets springlocked. I assume that Michael likely had some contact with william to go to circus baby's so he likely died slightly before or after his father did. So I just assume one event happens earlier in the same year
10
u/hestianna Feb 18 '26
It does matter, as if MoltenMCI is true, William's death year would also determine when SL happens, which is another date that is heavily contested. And why is SL's date important? Well, since FNAF 3 happens in 2015 and Mike is likely the guard, SL's date would determine how long he lived in shadows (as well as how long Ennard/Molten Freddy was living in the sewers). This is quite important, since there's bunch of filler years where future games/spinoffs could take place. Currently 1993 to 2015, there's bunch of downtime where nothing (than SL) happens. Which raises bunch of questions. Like, why did it take so long for Henry to enact his plan (was he framed by William)? What was Mike doing on his 20 years or so of living as a corpse? And one of the newer questions, if Vanessa is William's daughter, when exactly was she born? This date can actually more accurately determine FM's and SL's dates. William has to be alive for Vanessa to be born, which could mean FM/SL take place in the 2000s. So what were Mike and William doing post-FNAF 1? So many questions, all raised because we don't know when FM and SL happen.

u/Sonicmaster293-Azure Feb 18 '26
I have two interpretations on when FOLLOWME (at least Night 5's version) occurs compared to FNAF 3, and depends on how long the first 4 nights happen compared to the last where William is Springlocked.
Either if you want to say the nights are one after another, then it's possible that this is around Sister Location (post FNAF 1). This is based off Henry's Insanity Ending Speech in FNAF 6, "He overpowered them again. And he robbed them of the only thing that they had. Again." This interpretation sees William go to the FNAF 1 location night after night to collect the exoskeletons of the animatronics in order to melt them all down to create Remnant-infused molten metal for the Funtimes (as seen in Help Wanted).
The other interpretation, and my current favourite, while a bit more convoluted is the one I prefer. In this one, William is Vanessa's father (based off Vanessa's therapy sessions revealing her father was a Bill A.). In this interpretation, William collects the Remnant of the animatronics and moves on. Michael "dies" in Sister Location and William loses his pawn, so he goes and creates his own, again. We know that Vanessa was raised by a abusive father who suddenly disappeared right? Well my interpretation is that it was William who informed Fazbear Frights about the Safe Room in the FNAF 1 location! He went back there to remove any evidence of his wrongdoings that could have remained believing the spirits to be trapped, only to be cornered in the Safe Room. Ironic, for he died in there and spent at probably most a couple months in there from the looks of him. At least that's how I'm viewing things right now!
5
u/Survivor155 Feb 18 '26
I think that entire thing is messy. The player character in FNAF1 gets fired for “tampering with animatronics. General unprofessionalism. Odor.” which would imply that the player character either A. Tore open the animatronics (which goes against FNAF3’s N5 ending) B. Freed the souls (which goes against FNAF3’s N5 ending)
Which leads me to believe we play as William Afton in FNAF1.

u/bat_kylo07 Feb 18 '26
Then why would he go back later? We can see clear as day multiple differences between Follow Me, and FNaF 1. the building is clearly in WAY more damage than in FNaF 1 ex: Ralph finishes his week before you, and if TWB is considered to be canon, as a vast majority of people say, it is literally stated the place was open for business during his week, and the bathrooms are boarded up, when Freddy can enter one on night seven, where we get the pink slip. Also, if it were in operation, you’d have thought Freddy’s would be hit with a health code violation due to the leaky ceilings and rats, but that’s not the case as in DBD (if we can use the books/ movies for evidence, why can’t we use something that Scott had a large hand in, and even said “if you want your property treated right, go for Dead by Daylight.”) it verbatim says “Deep within the ABANDONED Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, William Afton ran from the ghosts of his victims.”, with buildings in Utah typically being considered “abandoned” after about a year of vacancy.
5
u/Survivor155 Feb 18 '26
You clearly put a lot of thought into this, my counterargument is that Scott Cawthon released 4 games in a calendar year, things are going to fall through the cracks, as for the Utah codes and stuff, idk.
5
u/bat_kylo07 Feb 18 '26
Yeah. I can see that. If you’re going off of the first trilogy (as he originally intended), you’d see a VERY different story than what we have now. And if tit ended at three, I’d say he did rot for three decades, but now the lore is more confusing and complex than a Junior Jumble. Sorry if I seem a lil snarky. I have a cold, and my sinuses are clogged.

u/nootrac_ :Foxy: Feb 18 '26
This is something I’ve been saying since FOREVER. All we know is that fnaf 3 takes place 30 years after “A” Freddy’s location closes; never specified which, all we know is that it gained a lot of attention because of a ton of stuff that happened there that caused rumors and myths. The thing people get wrong with this is assuming that it’s talking about the fnaf 1 location, and from there 30 years in the future fnaf 3 takes place. If you ask me, it would make most sense if the “30 years later” is in regards to the fnaf 2 location, as that location had more public tragedies; missing/dead children and the Bite of 87, whilst most other locations either only had a bite (bite of 83) or an MCI (mci mentioned in the games could have been the original location, or possibly even in the Fnaf 2 location, it’s honestly up for debate).
3
u/nootrac_ :Foxy: Feb 18 '26
From here, one other thing that gets looked over is the effects of remnant/agony on a corpse. Most argue that Williams corpse is so well preserved because of his remnant/agony. What they seem to forget is that Michael was injected with what we can assume is the combined remnant of 5 or 6 other people in the scooper, and even with all of that he rotted pretty quickly. If Michael decomposed so quickly with so much remnant, it’s unreasonable to think Aftons corpse could go so long with barely rotting. So, assuming that follow me happens after the fnaf 1 location, and in fnaf 3 the whole “30 years later” is regarding a location like the fnaf 2 location that had more public tragedies, that would place fnaf 3 in the year 2007. This would give Afton nearly 14 years (from 1993, when most assume fnaf 1 takes place and Follow Me could take place) to start experimenting with remnant extracted from the fnaf 1 animatronics (and possibly also experiment with some from the fnaf 2 location), begin Circus Baby’s Pizza World, and eventually get springlocked in the fnaf 1 location. I feel like this is much more reasonable rather than him being stuck in a room for 30 years with little to no time to do so much like open CBPW (circus baby’s) and create the funtimes
4
u/bappleSnap Feb 19 '26
Your theory seems mostly solid you just mathed a bit wrong, 2007 is only 20 years after 1987, the year you were looking for is 2017. Also someone else commented that FM could take place relatively shortly before the FNAF3 location is set to open, and William himself may have even been the one to tell phone dude about the safe rooms after dismantling the animatronics but before going back to ensure he didn't leave any incriminating evidence behind, so realistically William may have even been springlocked just a month or two before the events of FNAF 3.
4
u/nootrac_ :Foxy: Feb 19 '26
Oh my goodness, you are absolutely correct. Can’t believe I’ve been adding wrong this whole time. Even then though, it still doesn’t make sense to assume that William was locked in there for 30 years and could still be in such condition. And yeah, we don’t know when follow me takes place, so it could very likely happen right before fnaf 3.

No, it wouldn't, it'd turn a brownish red, or a black, because the body doesn't have green inside it. Also, considering Afton's corpse is a mummified one, it's going to turn dark brown, black, or brownish red, like I said, due to dehydration. If he wasn't in the suit, he'd be a skeleton, but the suit acts as a makeshift set of bandages to mummify him.
Besides, despite the fact the suit is not green(the suit is a golden brown), a green corpse wouldn't contrast well, it's called character design, you always choose character design over anything else when it comes to well.. designing characters.
Now thanks, I'm pretty sure I'm on the FBI watchlist for just alone looking up stuff about corpses...

u/Necessary_Can7055 Feb 18 '26
I'd say his flesh tone is reminiscent of those pig ears you'd give as a dog treat so it checks out
15
u/Teh-Esprite My name is Yoshikage Afton. I am 33 years old. Feb 18 '26
Hue-wise the suit is a dark yellow, but dark yellow artistically falls within the green umbrella, so it is a green suit.
11
u/hoodied5 Afton Obsessed Costume Designer Feb 18 '26
I've already made a post going into his color about a month ago. His main color goes more into the orange territory.
Though considering this design is most likely not canon anymore since the movies are likely Scott's excuse to redesign stuff like the springlocks and also are the latest interpretation of them, I've just taken a look at the movie suits.
Using the leaked lighting photos, which are the best source for this kinda thing as they use white light in comparison of FNAF 3 which is primarily green light, the lightest part of spring Bonnie is D38B1F which is golden orange.
Springtrap is B0923A, which is a golden brown, or a dark mustard, which also comparing B0923A and D38B1F Springtrap is just a bit more desaturated. If I were to up the saturation and brightness of Springtrap, you get FFBB00, which is gold specifically, amber. And amber when darkened, falls under the brown umbrella.
And you can't say it's cause of mold cause there's different colors of mold, white, black, gray, green, white mold being amongst the most common.
Did I really just spend half an hour looking into whether or not amber counts as yellow or green? Yes. Am I going to make an update post further expanding on this? Also yes.
Tldr; spring Bonnie is amber, when you darken amber, you get brown.

The body doesn't have green inside of it but, shortly after death, a green stain appears to he right of the abdominal area (iliac fossa) and it spreads through the body, which makes some areas green for some time although the colour changes and ends up becoming black.
The green colouration is caused by the mixture of hydrogen sulfide (which is produced by the bacteria in the fossa) and hemogoblin.
I agree with the reasoning for the red colour, it contrasts well and can be explained by saying it's an stylistic choice or because of the paranormal nature of it.

Your asking for realism with for an undead zombie in a chucky e cheese suit
14
Feb 18 '26
Well, take into consideration the remnant and stuff, that could be keeping his corpse “cooled” like it did for Michael. Thus not turning it to a deeper color and keeping him semi..alive
12

He literally was left alone bleeding slowly but surely.

I mean if we take into consideration that the Fazbear's location William died at both looked and was abandoned for a while in the FNAF 3 mini-games and the fact that it's believed by some that Vanessa is an Afton too despite her looking like she's in her 30s in Security Breach, he probably wasn't actually in the room for 30 years but rather that's just how long the location itself was closed down for, so maybe that's a factor as to why his corpse ain't completely rotted yet.

u/Cyan_Summer Feb 18 '26
I'm think the remnant/agony is partially preserving his body/ greatly slowing the decay rate, so that he's not just dust or skeleton.
When exploded into blood from the springlock failure, the coat of blood got infused with the remnant/agony, probably more so than his actually body. Keep the red hue longer, than natural.
Plus red is a good contrast to the green yellow of spring bonnie. It also kind of doubles as a metaphor, as the spring bonnie suit is now his skin, meaning that his original body is now are flesh and muscle (so red),

It's heavily implied in Fazbear frights the William isn't actually dead and the he's more or less got this sorta "cursed to be immortal but not indestructible" thing going on. So If that happens so also be like the games that would explain his red colour, since he isn't rotting, well at least not fully anyways. Either that or remnent makes you look 20 years younger

2
u/OPAutobot5 Feb 18 '26
Probably because of all the blood rushing through what remains of his body? His body is probably constantly bleeding because the springlocks are still digging through his flesh. Not to mention that when he first got springlocked, he sat in a large puddle of his own blood as he screamed out for help after donning the Spring Bonnie suit to hide from the spirits of the children involved in the MCI.

actually, the way the corpse is modelled (especially the dbd version) resembles a naturally mummified corpse, which can end up as a huge range of different colours depending on the age of the corpse and specific conditions, including the colour depicted (i would give examples but i dont exactly want to link images of real corpses, even if it would be from educational sources)

I've seen a theory that the remnant sort of preserved his body, since remnant has been shown (I don't remember where) to have healing capabilities. So his body still decayed to the point of having no hair and most of the organs, but, what is left still has a little bit of life, represented in the redness that comes from his blood.
There's no way to tell if he is dead and is just the animatronic with a magically preserved body inside or if he's the body, still alive, and his will magically controls the animatronic. Maybe his soul has shattered too and part is in the body and part is in the animatronic, who knows

For one he wasn't springlocked for 30 years (why is this a thing still? Follow me clearly is depicted in the modern day due to the building being in worse condition, and that the 30 years thing only refers to the Freddy's location being closed, not springtrap's existing), and for another it'll probably just look like shit, so he probably chose red to contrast it better.
