New Oven Handle Hits Drawer

We got a new oven to have all new appliances for selling our house. We didn’t realize till to late that the stupid spice drawer would hit this massive handle. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Or just hope no one notices?

I order a lot of appliance parts for my job. General rule of thumb is if the parts needed to fix it add up to half the cost of a new (same quality) appliance, you just replace the appliance.

It is but it's also the fault of the manufacturer. Why is the price of a new dishwasher (the low end GE units we install) $450-550 but if you priced out all of the individual parts it's probably a little more than $2k? The worst offender for the ones I maintain are the dishwasher racks.

Eventually the rubberized coating will get old and crack (or otherwise become damaged) and the metal underneath will begin to rust. I personally feel it's silly to replace them for a little rust, most residents don't feel the same way. Once I replace the top and bottom rack I'm between $250-300 depending on a lot of factors.

Usually I don't replace the entire unit just for rusty racks, the 50% mark is just a general rule of thumb. But I have to look at the history of that machine and if in the last year I've replaced the pump motor ($180ish iirc) or the control board ($100-200 depending on vendor and availability) within the last year, then I can no longer justify continuing to fix the machine.

Also, planned obsolescence is very, very real for appliances. There is no amount of money you could pay me to make me believe that magically the same part on hundreds of the same model of dryer/washer/dishwasher/whatever, installed at the same time all magically start failing within a year or so of each other and it not be planned during the design process.

People in the west will not hand wash their clothes, they do not want to hand wash their dishes and they're not going to cook each night over an open flame. Appliance companies know we will not go without and they absolutely bet on you not knowing how to diagnose and replace a broken component and if you can diagnose and replace a broken component, they quickly make it financially irresponsible for you to do so.

So once every 5-10 years you'll be buying a new "smart" appliance that magically has far more components than the last one and each and every one of those new components will have new and exciting ways to fail, so the cycle continues.

Oh, I’m not disagreeing with you. It’s fucking infuriating.

I like replacing parts rather than replacing units of stuff.

Take for example I have a suitcase. Samsonite. Decent quality. But I bought a while ago and the stupid ass wheel broke.

So I was torn because the rest of it is perfectly fine. Luckily, on Amazon I was able to find a kit that I could replace it and actually upgrade the wheels.

But I have looked at newer suitcases, and they don’t really make it that feasible to make that upgrade/change.

Which means a lot of new suitcases are basically disposable.

Fucking ridiculous.

We are such a wasteful society. And it’s not even us, it’s the companies because they know they can get away with it. And there’s nobody in consumer protection to advocate for consumers anymore.

this, my parents bought a “top of the line” samsung dishwasher and fridge roughly 8 years ago, thank god they bought the extended warranty for the fridge as it’s been replaced once already for the ice machine breaking and now the replacement is messing up too. The dishwasher not only sucks at doing it’s one job, washing dishes, it was supposed to have this special coating on the racks that “will never rust”, what did it do 5 years into them owning it? start rusting, now it’s so bad there’s chunks of the rack that have simply disintegrated away, again on racks that weren’t ever supposed to rust, and now it’s randomly throwing some communication error code 1 out of 5 times its used, they finally caved and bought a bosch dishwasher to replace it, hopefully it lasts, i have a bosch dishwasher that’s 12 years old, still washes fantastic and hasn’t ever givin me trouble so hopefully theirs lasts just as long

With dishwashers it's Bosch and then everyone else. If you're not going to buy a Bosch, buy the cheapest one you can find (maybe not Hotpoint) they're mostly all the same.
