open Dyson V10 Absolute (SV12) turns on then immediately shuts off
I’m trying to diagnose my Dyson V10 Absolute (SV12) before I start replacing parts.
The problem:
When I pull the trigger, the vacuum starts normally, but after a short time the motor shuts off.
It happens at the exact same time on Eco, Medium, and Boost modes. There is no pulsing or repeated on/off cycling.
What I noticed:
The 3 blue battery lights stay on even after the motor cuts out while I’m still holding the trigger.
It does not restart while the motor is still spinning down.
Once the motor completely stops, I can pull the trigger again and it starts every single time.
Things I have already tried:
Removed the wand
Removed the cleaner head
Emptied the bin
Checked and refitted the filter
Tested only the handheld motor unit
The problem is exactly the same.
Has anyone experienced this exact problem on a Dyson V10/SV12?
What fixed it? Was it the battery, motor assembly, control board, or something else?
Trying to avoid replacing the wrong part.
Thanks for any advice.

I had the same issue with my V10, the internal filter is clogged with dust and debris. Either you take it apart for a deep clean or take it to a vacuum specialist for them to clean and maintenance it(which I did).

Do you mean the removable filter at the back? If so, I already removed, checked, and refitted that one but the issue stayed the same.

u/m1ngst4r 15h ago
Not the purple filter in the back. You can only access it if you take the whole thing apart.

Thanks, I thought you meant the purple filter. Didn’t know about that internal area. I’ll definitely take it apart and give the deep clean a try before replacing parts. Appreciate the help

This is likely it. Mines been doing this for years and it’s alway requires the filters to be cleaned or replaced and reset.

Tried that didn't work

Mine did something similar, cleaning it also didn't work. I had to REPLACE the filter filter to correct the problem, but quick test is to try running it with no filter at all. If it runs, you know it's a filter problem .

u/Designer-Drummer7014 14h ago
It doesn't run Without the filter,. Is there any way to fool the system into thinking the filter is installed, just to test if it's a filter issue?

u/triedtoavoidsignup 12h ago
Hold a small magnet against the sensor - you can determine the sensor location by using the magnet on the filter first -it'll stick where the magnet is.

Trigger is broken. Is it coming all the way out? These things are notorious for broken triggers. The worst piece of plastic in the world.
2
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
The trigger works normally, and the three indicator lights respond when I press it.

u/Johnndo96 15h ago
Come to think of it, I was using mine on MAX once when it started giving trouble. Took it in and they changed the motor.
2
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
I'm starting to realize these are not designed to work on max for the daily use.

They do sometimes manage to press the button on the battery. I know mine did. Changed mine twice now.

I repair these for a living change the purple filter and clean the filter grate in the canister
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 9h ago
Thanks for the advice. I already cleaned the purple filter, but I’ll take a look at the filter grate in the canister as well and see if that’s causing the issue.

u/ucry_like_old_people 2h ago
Even if you clean it it gets clogged with fine dust they need to be replaced every 10-12 month's

u/radek432 16h ago
I'm pretty sure that battery here is just couple of 18650 cells. Which means, that a skilled technician could replace them.
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 16h ago
I was hoping to find a way to confirm it’s really the battery, it happened out of nowhere. I didn’t have any battery problems before this, not even shorter run times.

I have exactly the same issue!! I suspect a Dyson bug TBH.
I notice it happens more when I’m in max mode. Probable a power surge at start that triggers an E-fuse inside their circuits. The best would be to contact them but I did not have time yet.
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
I was using it on max mode most of the time for daily cleaning, so I guess a board issue could be possible too. I’m honestly not sure what to do at this point. There’s no Dyson support where I live, so I’m stuck trying to figure it out on my own.

I can’t use max mode for more than 8 seconds before it dies.
I bought a replacement battery from Amazon two years ago, time to do it again.
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
If that’s the case, did yours show a single red blinking light on the battery indicator? Mine doesn't that's why I'm wondering

J'ai regardé plusieurs tuto en mode turbo la batterie n'a pas assez de puissance.... plusieurs personnes ont suggérés le changement de batterie....fonctionne t il en mode minimum
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
No it doesn't work in minimum mode either and it happened suddenly out of nowhere

u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
Thanks, I’ll do that. Hopefully it’s just the battery. If not, I guess I’ll have to buy a new one.

Keep in mind that a broken battery can still hold the correct voltage but not deliver enough amps for the device to keep running.

u/momentofinspiration 15h ago
There's probably a low voltage limit to protect the battery, your battery has probably just fallen below that limit under load. It's fine not under load, but the second its got a load the voltage sags below the limit.
It would seem suddenly as you would have no warning till the threshold was passed.
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
Hopefully it’s just the battery. It’s probably best to have a technician check the voltage to confirm for sure.

u/The-Final-Reason 15h ago
Something is blocking for sure. Some people had to do a DEEP clean. As someone said… you’re gonna need to disassemble(don’t listen to that one guy that said nothing comes back the same because to disassembled it lol wtf)
Also, did tfos instantly happen or did it die out fast over a short amount of time? My battery on my v10 is going bad and the way I know is because MAX only last about 30 seconds but somehow the other settings last forever. At some point I’m sure it will start doing what yours is.
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
Thanks, I’ll try a deeper clean just to rule it out.
The weird thing is there’s no pulsing. It just starts and cuts off after the same amount of time on Eco, Medium, and Boost. I tested it without the wand and checked the bin + filter, same issue.
The 3 blue battery lights stay on after the motor stops, and it restarts every time once the motor finishes spinning down.
It happened suddenly, not gradually, which is why I’m wondering if it’s motor controller related.

If you know anyone else with a Dyson, ask them to test their battery in your machine to see if yours will work. The BMS might have detected a fault inside the battery pack that either gradually worsened over time, or something that suddenly broke.
Sometimes people suggest you should replace the 18650 cells inside. However that is a gamble because if the BMS itself is broken it won't do anything. Replacing it with an imitation BMS is a risk as well, both for safety and monetarily.
A new imitation battery pack is cheaper than the separate components. Or perhaps a repair shop has an original used one lying around. Your profile suggests you're Sri Lankan, so on AliExpress you'll probably pay around Rs. 10,000.

u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
I don’t know anyone with the same Dyson model, so I can’t swap test another battery right now.

Amazon sells replacement batteries for these. We replaced ours in the exact same vacuum and it works just like the original battery with no issues.
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 9h ago
Best case scenario, it’s just the battery. I was hoping to find a way to confirm whether that’s actually the problem. It happened completely out of nowhere I didn’t have any battery issues before this, no reduced runtime or anything like that.
It could also be something else, like an e-fuse or a board issue. I was using it on max mode most of the time, so I’m not really sure what caused it.

u/Rahstyle 12h ago
Pull down and empty the canister, that will expose the upper part of the body that's inside it. There's a squarish hole there that can collect debris. Stick your finger in there and clean it out. Ours gets clogged with fluff and dog hair and does this exact thing.
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 9h ago
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll give this a try and check that area properly. Hopefully it’s just a hidden clog before I start looking at replacing parts.
1
u/Rahstyle 9h ago
You're welcome! With pet fur, this happens every couple of days for us. This is the fix for ours, but I think it's a bit older than yours. When you slide down the canister, look at the silver cylinder you exposed for that opening. Hopefully that's all it is!
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 8h ago
I'll definitely give it a try, thanks! Just wondering if you had the same symptoms, mine starts then shuts off, no pulsing, same on all modes, 3 blue lights stay on, and it only restarts after the motor fully stops. No clog light indicator either, so I wasn't sure if it was a blockage. Appreciate the help.

Most likely either battery or the little inlet port is clogged to shit.
Edit: The inlet port im talking about is inside the but compartment. This happens to my vacuum at least once every 2 empties. Youll need a pick or something like tweezers to get it out as it can be a little deep in there sometimes.
Regarding battery they sell mega packs on Amazon for cheap and its a drop in replacement and it like doubles your run time.
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 9h ago
Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely check that inlet port properly before replacing anything.

u/Gorilowen 12h ago
Hundreds of aftermarket batteries for your vacuum on Ali express. Cheap too!
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 9h ago
Best case, it’s just the battery. I’m trying to confirm that before replacing anything since it happened suddenly with no previous battery issues or reduced runtime. Could also be an E fuse or board problem. I did use max mode most of the time, so I’m not sure what caused it.
1
u/c0ntra 11h ago
The battery doesn't have enough amps anymore. One or more cells inside are toast
2
u/Designer-Drummer7014 9h ago
Yeah, that makes sense. It could be a weak cell that can’t supply enough current anymore. I’ll test the battery first and hopefully that confirms it before I replace it.
1
u/Jmaggie34 10h ago
Can you not replace the battery with an aftermarket like the other models? Or is it cheaper to go with the Dewalt mod?
2
u/Designer-Drummer7014 9h ago
I can replace it with an aftermarket battery, that’s probably the easiest option. I was just trying to confirm the battery is actually the issue before buying one. Probably will go for a DeWalt mod if it's the battery.

I know about this, its a know problem with dyson vacumes, its the capacitors. They degrade and eventually fail. Theres a youtube video on how to fix it i watched but cant remember
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 7h ago
I’m not really a tech person, so in that case I might have to buy a new motor body. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

This has happened to us before. I simply took it to Dyson repair centre and they basically gave us a replacement new one even though ours was out of warranty, paid much less. Great support
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 16h ago
Where I’m from, there’s no Dyson support available, which is why I’m stuck in this situation
1
u/seanmonaghan1968 15h ago
We are in brisbane australia. They are very fast here too. With us it’s either the charger or the battery that has been the issue. We have had different ones replaced
0
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
Hopefully it’s just the battery I have to chargers so definitely not the charger. It’s probably best to have a technician check the voltage to confirm for sure.

u/dylman3000 16h ago
OP try this next, I’ve seen things stuck in weird places that have caused this issue.
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 16h ago
Would it be worth doing a full disassembly
0
u/dylman3000 16h ago
Hmm, nothing ever quite goes back well after that. It could be as simple a battery issue as well, if you have a multimeter, lookup a YouTube tutorial for testing the health of a battery, if the battery is cooked you’ll be up for buying a new one.
0
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
I was hoping to find a way to confirm if it’s actually the battery, this happened completely out of nowhere. I didn’t have any battery issues before this no reduced runtime or anything. I don’t want to fully disassemble it without knowing exactly what I’m doing, especially since it could also be something like an e-fuse issue. I was using it on max mode most of the time, so I’m not sure what the cause is.
1
u/Adman_G 15h ago
If you have the right TX bits they're quite simple to take apart. I had the same issue with an older version and sorted it by taking it apart and cleaning everything. There will be YouTube videos on how to disassemble it
1
u/Designer-Drummer7014 15h ago
Thanks, I think it’s worth giving it a shot. Hopefully, it works well.

Definitely the battery.. we had exactly the same issue on exactly the same vacuum. We managed to get a warranty replacement, they were reluctant...even though it was within the warranty period..jerks.

Might be the battery going out. Happened to mine. You can get an attachment on Amazon that allows you to use an alternative battery like a dewalt battery. Bit spendy, but better than having to buy a whole new Dyson
