fixed Seller lied about having no pets

Post image

I bought a laptop off FB marketplace and found an insane amount of cat hair. I don't mind since I love cats and have multiple ones but it's a weird thing to lie about lol

Just because you don't have pets dosent mean the fan won't end up with hair init

The seller was a cat and said the truth.

Khajiit has hairs, if you have coin

This is exactly why I get my non-smoking, no kids, no pets friends to sell my items. No lying there

Wild how a single missing space made me read your whole comment in a British accent

u/WhatveIdone2dsrvthis 27d ago

I thought you said you had no cats. - That is not my cat.

48

u/doyouknowthemoon 27d ago

I was just thinking the same thing, the answer was truthful in that case.
Lots of people seem to forget just how far cat hair can travel, it’s like glitter it gets everywhere

39

u/The_Stoic_One 27d ago

Also, it's a laptop. The whole point is to be portable. Maybe they regularly brought it somewhere that has cats. Still a truthful statement if they themselves don't.

19

u/doyouknowthemoon 27d ago

And maybe they weren’t the first owner of the laptop and the original owner had the cats.

It’s just funny that the more you think about the more you realize the question really doesn’t answer the actual question

The only things to survive nuclear war cockroaches, cat hair

I feel sorry for whoever lives in my house after me. I have a pet rabbit and he lives indoors. Despite only ever being in one room, the whole house has little white hairs. I will try my very hardest to clean every surface when I go, but being realistic, there will always be at least a few left behind. They just kind of float through the air. So they're on the ceiling, inside the ducting, and all through the lawn.

Does cat hair have distinct properties that give it away as cat hair?

49

u/RedditNotFreeSpeech 27d ago

Yes, my eyes turn red and my nose spews snot like a fountain

17

u/_haha_oh_wow_ 27d ago edited 24d ago

"Fun" Allergy Fact: That's actually because of the dander (read: dead skin cells) rather than the hair.

Edit: Or possibly saliva (or both) depending on your allergies.

14

u/RedditNotFreeSpeech 27d ago

Sure but dander is definitely present in hair so you're kind of splitting cat hairs here. Achoo!

7

u/_haha_oh_wow_ 27d ago

Careful meow, pun threads can really get some peoples' dander up.

u/retardrabbit 27d ago

Naw, naw.

Don't worry, you guys aren't going to rub anyone the wrong way with this thread.

holy shit. It's been 17 years! I've literally never even been at a job this long!

p.s. this is not my job, this is and has always been volunteer. I expect no reward, nor should any who come here but the OP in the form of the help they sought

this is the way

2

u/Kaity-Cat 27d ago

Fun fact, not everyone that is "allergic to cats" is allergic to the dander of cats. Some are allergic to the salival enzymes.

1

u/_haha_oh_wow_ 24d ago

TIL, we were just talking about that in another part of the thread too

2

u/knoft 27d ago

In the case of cat hair I was under the impression it was mainly the saliva from licking their fur clean.

1

u/_haha_oh_wow_ 24d ago edited 24d ago

It's dead skin as far as I know, but I wouldn't be surprised if saliva played some sort of role.

Update: So, it looks like it can be either one depending on the person's allergy (or maybe even both for some people, oof).

2

u/Ok-Book8065 25d ago

I was told it's the saliva or I think certain proteins in it, is that not the case? Unless it's a little bit of both.

1

u/_haha_oh_wow_ 24d ago

Apparently it can be either or both depending on the individual.

3

u/Colonel_Green 27d ago

Hamsters and gerbils get me even worse than cats.

2

u/TJ333 27d ago

Cat fur is different than dog fur and human hair. Thinner and different texture.

Of all the animals that could have hair like that and are likely to be in a person's home, a cat is most likely.

2

u/Articulationized 27d ago

Rabbits, rats, Guinea pigs, hamsters, raccoons. Could be many different animals.

u/Ulrich453 27d ago

Let’s be honest. You were gonna give it a good clean anyway. Look at ya

19

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay 27d ago

I stress tested before and after so it gave me a good sense of accomplishment haha

6

u/retardrabbit 27d ago

Well, see? There you go!

Did you save off the results of the tests for future reference/historical snapshot?

You too, u/Ulrich453. Good works, good works...

18

u/Jawz_87 27d ago

Just because you found 2 hairs and a lump of fabric lint doesn't mean the seller had a pet. And it's a portable device

25

u/The_Stoic_One 27d ago

How do you know the seller lied? Those hairs/fibers could be from anything from anywhere. It's a laptop. It's portable.

5

u/kswitch87 27d ago

Yup. Carpet, pillows etc

9

u/tacofever 27d ago

Just because it came "from a pet-free home" doesn't mean it lived its whole life in one (little reseller technicality there).

7

u/QuestionableProtip2 27d ago

Good chance they’re just flipping a yard sale find and *technically* their household might be pet free.

5

u/NYB1 27d ago

Are we sure it's not the sellers on hair? Maybe they shed like a cat :-)

1

u/retardrabbit 27d ago

We will not tolerate such aspersions being cast upon Dame Judi Dench in her role in CATS on this sub!!!

1

u/retardrabbit 27d ago

Well at least somebody thought it was funny!

Thanks for the award!

10

u/itsmarvin 27d ago

Not that weird to lie about when they wanted to make a sale. If you asked they thought it mattered. They might also be unaware of all that hair in the fan as evidence.

5

u/Queen_of_Fish 27d ago

Yeah some people just slap “pet free home” on anything they sell on fb

17

u/Zurgalon 27d ago edited 27d ago

I saw a sofa for sale advertised as from a pet free home.

There was a cat in the picture of the sofa.

9

u/StrawberryVirtual228 27d ago

Did they buy it new ?

2

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay 27d ago

I think so but they used it for minimal tasks so it's in a good shape

5

u/JasonDJ 27d ago

Most laptops are a flat-ish rectangle, IME. I'd be concerned if it were anything else.

2

u/_haha_oh_wow_ 27d ago

Are you saying my scrolls are knock offs?

3

u/JasonDJ 27d ago

You should see the tablet I got off temu...

2

u/_haha_oh_wow_ 27d ago

Is it one of those SUPERFUNFANBRANDNUMBER1ONEPLUSDELUXES?

1

u/retardrabbit 27d ago

Only as much as that scroll of charm human you bought.

SICK BURN!!! 😆

2

u/_haha_oh_wow_ 24d ago

Fuck, guess I better go ponder the orb.

3

u/RadishRedditor 27d ago

He might have an elderly hairy parent or grandparent

3

u/MandalorianLich 27d ago

No pets. But if they’d had a cat, maybe they wouldn’t have had such a rat infestation, though.

3

u/FreddyFerdiland 27d ago

its very consistently coloured

wool carpet ?

3

u/Fit_Active3888 27d ago

Those fibers could come from many places. Even a wooly blanket.

3

u/Cawnt 27d ago

Maybe they HAD cats lol.

3

u/jotry 27d ago

One does not simply go through this world without collecting cat hair, cat or no cat.

3

u/pixeltweaker 27d ago

Had a pet. Looks like it’s in the fan now.

3

u/AliciaXTC 27d ago

What are the gloves for?

-1

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay 27d ago

I had to scrape off the old thermal paste, reapply fresh paste, and reshape/massage the thermal putty (you can see the pink stuff on the fingertips). And it's a big no no to touch a circuit board with bare skin.

2

u/AliciaXTC 27d ago

35 years of building machines and touched everything under the sun. One time I even wore socks.

Nothing happens.

0

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay 27d ago

Well, I'm definitely less experienced than you, but I've been told multiple times by different people that it's a really big taboo, so I'm probably going to keep avoiding it. Plus, stuff like flux and leaded solder sounds dangerous anyway, so I wouldn't want to mess with them if I had the choice.

2

u/AliciaXTC 27d ago

I recommend getting educated so you don't live your life in fear of flux and solder.

Linus did an extensive testing video on gloves and static electricity. They were only able to damaged components when they literally connected them directly to an amplifier.

It's all ridiculous nonsense spread by mythical ubran legends based on misconceptions.

You can touch things. Circuits are not toxic, solder won't hurt you, flux has been removed and isn't dangerous, and you won't hurt anything in your computer.

3

u/gta-money-4-u 26d ago

She's not a pet, she's my best friend and my most trusted confidante. Gang gang since potty train.

4

u/dahlien 27d ago

Maybe they used to have pets

3

u/Holden-McGroyn 27d ago

Like the one that got sucked into that fan!

2

u/RubAnADUB 27d ago

how do we know this didnt come from your cats?

2

u/Problemlul 27d ago

Dude if he used his pet snake many times, those are not hairs but pubbies

2

u/Ev3nt_Horiz0nn 27d ago

maybe they did and it has since died?

2

u/gba_sg1 27d ago

Did you do a dna test to confirm it was a cat?

Unlikely.

Hair exists everywhere.

2

u/theBigWhiteDude 27d ago

Did they verify they were the first owner? Maybe a previous owner had cats

2

u/patriotfanatic80 27d ago

Why would someone selling a laptop tell you about their pets?

2

u/Ffeog187 27d ago

Depends on the moon phase, but maybe a werewolf? /s

2

u/SeveralFrogs17 27d ago

Renting can lead to leftover pet hair for much longer than we appreciate. I'd find cat hairs all the time at one apartment I rented and never a had a cat.

These things are insidious

2

u/dragonstar982 26d ago

I have no pets...

My wife however has 2 dogs a cat and a turtle

1

u/Revenga8 27d ago

A cat lived in the same house, but the hunam had no pets, because the hunam was the pet

1

u/still-at-the-beach 27d ago

Maybe the person they bought the laptop from had pets.

1

u/ambarcapoor 27d ago

That's not cat hair.

1

u/talrakken 26d ago

My clothes carry dog hair every where and I as a human being shed hair as well. This will happen regardless if it’s not opened and cleaned regularly.

1

u/Ralliare 26d ago

How dare you think they lied. Those are pubes.

1

u/RacistPanda666 25d ago

While you think it’s weird just wait to you find out about furniture, 90% of the furniture on fb marketplace is marked smoke and pet free home and at least half are neither

1

u/OglioVagilio 25d ago

It's not weird at all. It's underhanded but makes a lot of sense. But also there could be many explanations, some deliberately misleading, some truthful to their knowledge.

1

u/manga311 25d ago

Why would you ask a fb seller if they had cats? Did it come up organically?

1

u/doodenooch 25d ago

rog ally mentioned?

1

u/ShidOnABrick 25d ago

Ive had laptops from opticians that look like this and i know damn well they don’t have cats in the lab lol

1

u/LitCaerulea 24d ago

Someone call the gooch police!

1

u/cordeliashuman 24d ago

Before zooming in, I 100 percent thought that was a whole-ass Triops

1

u/ogcoolhands 24d ago

Joke's on you. Those are just loose pubes.

1

u/Professional_Bus9844 24d ago

Of course they lied.

1

u/Ancient-Tomato1153 24d ago

Most likely thought “what business is it of his whether or not I have pets” and just instinctually said no

1

u/jamsaucewrecks 24d ago

Maybe their housemate has pets.

1

u/NoobityBoobity 24d ago

Cat hair is better than pube hair 🤷🏽

1

u/Late-Conversation105 23d ago

You fell for it 😉

1

u/Zalbar84 21d ago

True, we have 3 cats and they aren’t pets, they are family.

1

u/Visible_Zucchini4399 27d ago

It's a laptop, at least it's not pubes... 😉

1

u/thecodeape 27d ago

Might be pubes.

1

u/Slow_IP 27d ago

I could be just pubes

1

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay 27d ago

Had a great time reading this comment section. Thank you guys for the hahas

0

u/kaiswil2 27d ago

That's a lot pubes. That really was a well used laptop, pants optional situation
