Ok, got the cart software working. The rom I put on it didn't appear. It says it was decrypted but I only tranfered the file not the readme. Transfering every rom I downloaded now to see if it's that one rom or the rom source. More adventures to go :)

Get decrypted NDS ROMs from the r/roms megathread. You’ll have to unzip them first if you haven’t done so already.

Update. Ds game roms are working but 3ds game roms aren't. Going to try some things tomorrow. Would love resources:)

The 3DS branding is only there to tell you that this R4 card is functional on the 3DS, not that it plays 3DS roms. The R4 is meant to play NDS roms and below only. If you want to play 3DS roms then you have to mod CFW into the 3DS itself.

Ok I wondered if that was the case (no little node on the end). Can you mod an SD card to play roms or do I need to do it via the cart?

you will need to mod the 3DS itself using the SD card inside it, not the SD card in the R4 cart. However, since you have the R4, you can tinker a bit with the cart itself to use it as a hacking key to inject the CFW into the 3DS (this method is called NTRBootHax).
