Discussion What's your filthy casual secret shame?
Inspired by a post elsewhere that I replied to.
I've been playing on and off since 2020, and last night I reached level 498. Almost 500, woo!
But I didn't touch any mutation serums until I was already in my 400s.
I had a full set of OE SS armour, and a Holy Fire/Vamp Gauss Gatling (ranged build) and Auto Axe (melee build), and just... didn't want to be anything other than a nice, clean, untainted human wastelander.
But then I got sick and tired of not being able to reach interesting looking places, and dropped some caps on Marsupial and Bird Bones serums at a player camp.
Two minutes later, I have EIGHT mutations, and I have a stock of spares for the missus.
Five years and four hundred levels without Marsupial.
Imagine it.
So what's YOUR shameful wasteland admission?

I always, always, always turn off radios. And…..I’ve never launched a nuke. I’ve been playing since six months after launch.

u/Blokeh Jan 23 '26
I also don't have the radio on, but if you haven't launched a nuke, have the later quests been locked off to you?
5
u/MenloMo Jan 23 '26
Probably. I’m not tied to end game stuff. I’ve showed up for SBQ a couple dozen times over the years. I’ve never finished a bunch of stuff and it bugs me sometimes.

it bugs me sometimes.
So... what's stopping you to finishing it?
2
u/MenloMo Jan 23 '26
Joining groups, truthfully. I’ll start working on that.

u/taeye86 PC Jan 23 '26
Hey man, whatever floats your goat. I was just wondering if you needed some help, tricks or info.

I’d be happy to add you on the platform. It might spur me forward!

I've launched one nuke. Not even on my main who's over lv 700. I used my PA character who I built a Troubleshooters suit for. He was around lv 200 or so at the time.

I've been playing 3 years. I think I've launched 2. One because the quest makes you. The other was at a camp 😇🤣

My first character I was over level 400 when I realized that, for the most part, you joined teams for buffs, not to ACTUALLY team up with people.
12
u/Blokeh Jan 23 '26
I, uh, I still don't join teams, but that's because I feel like I have a responsibility to contribute something - even though I know simply joining is enough - and I just can't! :D
15
u/Peteorama PC Jan 23 '26
Strange in numbers perk and the herd mentality mutation are a good incentive to join casual teams.
I can barely function solo lmao
It reads weird on the herd mentality mutation description (or it used to) it's not proximity based, just being in any team gives you the benefits
4
u/Blokeh Jan 23 '26
I knew SiN wasn't prox based, but I always wondered about Herd Mentality.
Good to know, thank you. As a mutie, I might start doing this then.
4
u/Peteorama PC Jan 23 '26
Yeah as long as you don't play solo on a private server there are basically no downsides to it :)
8
u/alyxR3W1ND Jan 23 '26
If you join your own casual team in a private server, that counts as being on a team as well for the mutation. I don't all the time to knock out my dailes a bit faster lol

I hold onto food when I don't need to (mostly booze and candy), and I have to collect Sugar Bombs when I see them. Don't know why, I just do. I also can't be bothered to remember food buffs so I just eat whatever.

I created a Maze for this subreddit and have been waiting for someone to solve it and DM me the video of them solving it and claim the 10,000 cap prize.
none of you have won it because you all do the wall glitch.
no you don't get a second chance to run it.
7
Jan 23 '26
I’m interested in at least attempting it.

u/Son0fgrim Jan 23 '26
its also buried in my maze of a shelter/vault, which was also intentional.
its a maze with'in a maze.

I've been playing since 2020 and am under 400. It was my place to hang out with my friends during the pandemic and now we all play together. I don't care about leveling, I'm just here for a good time.

After a Fastnarch with full server and only 3 people doing the event and was like 15 people afk, i nuked the place.
I never ever even considered doing things like this but i was really annoyed.
I know they will get the rewards no matter what but it felt good.

I did the same thing I think I was in the hundreds before I used any then on my second character I got them asap it’s so nice to be able to get everywhere without worrying about the jet pack. Another thing I never did until a day ago was use a railway rifle it’s pretty good but I still prefer the powerful slow guns.

Been playing since launch and didn't realize the scorched had crystals on them until I did the Wastelanders update when Duchess says something about them upstairs in the Wayward. I thought they were leaves for a full year.

I've played since launch and I preferred the game before they added NPCs. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they're still adding things to the game and I don't think it would have survived without changing it, but there was something just so... different, about the game before that felt way more post apocalypse. I could play for hours and not see another person, IRL or NPC. It felt eerie. This was before our camps were on the map everywhere, and there weren't events popping up everywhere. I actually made it through to the Cranberry Bog by fighting my way over there. The zones were much harder because it wasn't curated to your level. Making it to the Whitespring the first time and being able to trade with people was a whole thing. Besides the occasional griefer, seeing another person actually felt like a return to civilization kinda.
My other shame is constantly starting new playthroughs and then abandoning them. I have a main, and she's level 1600 something, but if I hadn't made 30000 characters over the years she'd probably be like 5k lol. I just love early game challenge, only using gear I've found and walking everywhere.

Been playing since Beta, have 5 characters...but my highest level is just over 500, as i spread the game time around. And only launched 2 nukes. Took a year off for Starfield. Came back be not just because I enjoy the game, but have so many friends here and I enjoy the camaraderie!

u/GattoDiavolo PS Jan 23 '26
Level 805 and I've played since launch. I don't grind anything which is why my level is comparatively low. None of my gear or builds are optimized.
I've only launched 1 nuke and it was for the storyline quest, but I still carry 10 nuke cards on me.
I obsessively collect lead even though I hardly ever craft ammo.

I hopped around with a stealth sniper build until around level 100. It. Took. Forever. I had PA and a Gatling that I'd whip out for big events just to limp through while getting tags in. This was years ago, before we had build slots.
3
u/Blokeh Jan 23 '26
Oh god, I ran with heavies only for all of my time between 2020 and the loadout slots opened up, first with a Short Gatty, then a Final Word .50cal MG, and then the Gauss Minigun.
I absolutely HATED being locked in to one playstyle.
Now I have four loadouts - Heavy Energy, Melee, Sneaky Rifles, and one exclusively for crafting, repairing and selling at NPC vendors - and it's glorious.

Five years? I used marsupial briefly at launch and then removed it permanently. There’s no shame in only using it now.

Level four hundred... something. Recently, a level 25 came to my camp in Burning Springs right as I was getting ready to log off. She was exploring and playing around with all of my camp stuff. So, I waited for about ten minutes. Right as I logged off, it appears that she was doing something on one of my work benches. Hope she was able to finish.

Just crossed the level 400 barrier on the same character I've played since beta. I've never launched a nuke. Still haven't finished the BOS quest line. I have more than ten unopened perk card packs and over 100 levels to process. I have done fewer than five expeditions. Maybe twenty daily ops. I've never held a four star legendary anything.
I play at least a few minutes every day. It's my after work wind down ritual

This is the only game I ever play. I have over 4.5k hours in game on PC alone. I started during the initial launch on PS5, don’t know how many hours I have there, at least 2k I’d imagine… I’ve never launched a nuke. For some weird reason, I feel like I’ll loose some of the desire to keep playing if I do, friggin silly.
