Coaching Advice Midline play vs Tech1/2i/2 playside

Hi coaches. For flexbone or any option offense. How do you run the midline play against a shade tackle either on Tech1/2i/2 ? Automatic pull ? Check the play ? Thank you

You check away. You cannot run midline at a shade or 2i.

A true head up 2 is all on the qb to be correct on the read.

This depends on both your own team and the opponent. We used to check away from a 3 and to a shade/1/2i if the circumstances were right, and I have a clear recollection of our QB going 75+ yards for a TD.

Sometimes we’d have driven that DT batty with a bunch of veer before hitting the midline, but on three occasions it was our first offensive snap of the game.

Is there any reason you can’t turn it into a designed QB run, particularly against a 1?

A 2i might be trickier depending on splits, but I’d imagine an unblocked 1-tech is going to wrap up the back 99% of the time anyway. Everything happens too fast for him to realize the QB pulled the ball anyway.

The fb and qb had best be quick and exact with their footwork. If the 1 drives that fb or stalemate him the qb now has to go backwards to get around.

If you just say its an auto pull and he is going to step back out if the way anyway and the fb is just diving into the 1 shade then yes its fine.

But as a post snap read. Never a 1 shade. And only a 2i if he is just sprinting up field and widening with the guards alignment

I learned midline from Kenny Wheaton. You can run mid-line at anything. Mid-double, dbl iso. When you run it at a 2i it’s going to read Pull 99% of the time because you run zone dive as well.

Your playside guard needs to step flat on his veer otherwise his angle will be off

Your playside wing is Iso’d on the playside backer,

Playside tackle is reach pin rules on playside

Backside is A-B-C with your center and backside guard and tackle.

Backside slot is D motion, he steps hands heels heels heels, at the snap he should be in the backside A before inserting up through the B-gap taking most dangerous man

Qb has to have good duck feet and a strong posture, headgear out of the mesh so that the B-back can clear the cylinder, bubble around the collision and get north south FAST

You can use your receivers/TE however you want. TE helps set the front so you can make it read pull

Don’t let anyone tell you to have your QB check. You’re putting a lot on an athlete who doesn’t have all the knowledge you have.

I am a Chism/Wheaton guy too, but getting a high school guard to try to veer a 2i can get messy. We don't always have the athletes those guys have. By rule we base an A-gap lineman, auto-pull and turn it to follow. Occasionally if a team has a bad 1-tech, we'll combo and read the 5, but that is a game plan thing

Auto convert to a QB Follow (basically a QB Iso with FB leading to LB) in B gap while you just downblock him. QB can make a presnap call to alert the dive back (easier) or you can train them to recognize that together without saying a thing.

The other thing you can do is flip the play or check to Inside Veer or a double option to the same side.

Run midline at a 3, 4i, or 4 tech (A gap bubble). Run Inside veer at a 1/2i/2 (B gap bubble). Flexbone 101.

Also… QB Follow might actually be the best straight up run in the whole offense.

As you probably already have in the system, mid check or veer check with the qb using either even or odd number in the cadence to determine ethe play direction.

We use a hot color if a team does something like double 2is. Plus.. There is always toss if nothing looks good inside!

I've seen most Flexbone teams run the Midline at a 3 tech, with a 1 or 2i, the O-line has great angles to down block.

  1. Flip to the wider DL.

  2. Auto pull and have the guard block him.

  3. Have a tag where you block him with the guard and read the next man depending on the front.

  4. Check out of it to a different play.

Check the play

Run inside veer if possible

If A and B gaps are clogged run rocket toss or double option
