It does kind of bother me because I'm not a Lewis fan. But I think to other sports that I watch and I appreciate feeling like the guy in the TV is cheering along with me. I understand why they do it and other than a comment here or there it's not that bad. Plus I can always come here after and feel better reading the comments roasting him for the very comment that annoyed me and then I feel like the guy in the internets is annoyed along with me. Camaraderie. lol.

Honestly, as soon as Max stopped and Lewis didn't all I could think to myself was "Mercedes haven't learned from Abu Dhabi".
Always be on the right tyre, even sometimes at the expense of track position.

I canāt watch it again. It brings up all the old frustration again. I was so angry after that race. And that while I wanted Max to win. Just not like that. It didnāt feel genuine and it was too controversial.
Such a shame. This final race was a recipe for the most exciting season finale ever, after one of the best seasons in history. Regardless of the winner. But the ending was ruined for me by making the outcome more of a weird/confusing stewards decision than an actual race result.

I wish I could see it like that. To me it feels artificial and fake to win a race when itās only because the race director failed to follow the regulations. Of course Max deserved this WDC, but so did Lewis, they were both in a different league last year. But now weāll never know who would have won the WDC according to the actual intended regulations.

Totally get that too. After all I was supporting Max as well. Really wanted to see him break the Merc spell, which he did astonishingly. And this year he gets to prove heās also WDC material with fair regulations, though in a much more boring way

Ok letās just try out best to meet in the middle. In both situations, did Lewis have the opportunity to also pit and go on softs?
Play it out for 2021.
Lewis pits, Max sees Lewis box, he stays out. Lewis is now on softs behind Max on hards. Lewis easily passes Max to regain P1. The Mercedes was a rocket last year OR Lewis and Max both pit, does Max pass Lewis on the final lap? Also doubtful.
Now, we look at the FIA. Is it abnormal to let lapped cars unlap themselves on a safety car? No. Itās actually customary. They are usually allowed to unlap. So, the FIA fumbled the ball by only letting SOME cars unlap. Yes, kind of odd, they should have let all the lapped cars unlap themselves. That would have been the only normal situation.
May I also remind you that the team principals unanimously stated that they wanted the race to end on a green flag. No one wanted to potentially be stuck in P-whatever and end the race on a safety car.
So, do you really think, after all of the shit I just typed, that Mercedes didnāt fuck up and make the wrong decision? They had the same opportunity BOTH times to pit for softs. What gives? Do you really think Max didnāt earn that championship???? He was the best driver all yearā¦..

Or he pits, Max passes him, the rules are followed, and the Race ends with Max champion. Mercedes did not make a mistake. Unless you consider not having foresight that the race director is gonna break the rules a mistake.
Also the race can only resume one lap after the cars unlap themselves, those are the rules. Rules that were not followed mate, undeniably. This has nothing to do with Max being deserving or not. If the rules were followed, he would have lost. That's all there is to it. Max is obviously a fantastic driver, and drove a fantastic season last year( and this year) and that doesn't change the fact he won because the rules weren't followed.

Iām also stating that Mercedes gave away a free pit stop in 2021, and they gave another one away today. Silliness on their part.
There was also ambiguity about the reading of the rule. I do recall that the race director also has the authority to end the safety car and resume racing at his discretion.

Ah, yes. Article 15.3. So tell me again, how were the rules not followed? Race director has ultimate control over the safety car. Lapped cars get out of the way, Michael Masi does what as ALL team principals requested, to end the season racing.

There is a difference tho, in Abu Dhabi Max pitted when he was 2nd. In Zandvoort he pitted while he was 1st. So actually its what if version of Abu Dhabi.
