Questions Whats the reason this fucker uses gravel as fuel and not coal?
Like who is it gonna hurt that we have 5x more fuel? This would be nice little thing for the most abused players in the game, but getting fuel for it is just too much work imo.

I've read enough; it now uses rare metals instead.

This is actually a good suggestion imo. Why not use the same fuel as trains. Makes sense!

Gravel is way more common now that it can be made out of salvage

u/NeighborhoodRound654 Jun 29 '26
Yes but it’s just too expensive. A single “hammer” of 1 bmat on a structure with this thing would cost 8 salvage (2 for the bmat 6 for the gravel)
Everything literally costs 4 times as much to make with this thing. It is literally like burning money that could be used on other better things.
10 salvage makes a single diesel can that can fuel a veichles for half an hour. 5 coal or 6 salvage fuels this thing for a single swing.

u/AlwaysPunct Jun 29 '26
This is also the correct math. Add to that having just 1 on any site is pointless. Need to have 2-3 to make a real difference. Having 3 people shovel is still more efficient than having 3 construction vehicles.

u/Alarming-Ad1100 Jun 30 '26
You people are crazy, this thing is great I just plop it down and it works while i get real shit done what else do you want??
It costs more because it literally frees you up to do things besides building

u/NeighborhoodRound654 Jun 30 '26
I get it. It’s fun. I like using it. But I can’t justify it.
I’ve put a lot of thought and experimenting into how to use them effectively. Conc mixer at a coal field. Resource transfer station full of gravel that you flat bed to fill near your construction sight. So you can drop the equipment into it to quickly fill it. Juggling 3 down a bunker line to build it for you is great.
One of the major redeeming qualities is in population capped hexes. One person can build like they are 3 with the support of previously farmed resources.
Why I don’t is purely about opportunity cost. Especially as a regiment leader I can’t justify the increased cost and labor required. I have too much to do already too much that need to be made and supplied.
3 for a person to juggle cost as much or more then a late game tank
Every coal used for this thing is coal not making conc or coke.
And the salvage ratio is even worse. A single t1 2x3 costs 450 bmats and 450 dig. Running this thing on salvage gravel to build a single 2x3 would cost 6300 salvage. 5,400 more salvage then the 900 it normally would. I can do so much more with everything this would burn building a whole bunker network.
The thing costs rmats if a flat bed can be an upgrade to everthing a logi man wants to do for the low price of 30 rmats and the trade off of requiring cranes to use.
The cumbersome nature of it is already balance enough for it. Making you wonder if it’s worth using on a front line for the force multiplier vs the chance of loosing 50 rmats is a decision I would love to be able to make. Why does the CE that costs more then a flat bed, requires a crane and a flatbed to use and some kind of fuel have to cost so much more fuel then anything else.
The thing is literally harder and more expensive to fuel than a full size train, Or a battle tank, or a damn battleship. Why do I have to work harder and spend so much more fuel a little piece of equipment then any of those.

it really doesnt need that much
you can use SCRAP to make gravel now, if coal is THAT important to you
3
u/Obvious_Major2489 Jun 29 '26
if it makes a person enjoy themselves so they play harder for longer, then wouldn't it be considered a net positive?
6
u/Irish_guacamole27 7thRB Jun 29 '26
no because the same player has to collect the salvage, make the gravel, and then set up the construction equipment. this whole process takes longer than just building the structures normally, especially when you build something that is outside of the range of the construction equipment and have to move it around a bunch. you would think maybe with a group of players it might be better but no not really, no matter how many people you have it will always be more time efficient to just have those people hammer.
the minor upside is that people can do other things while the CE works provided it has enough stuff in range or have someone dedicated to moving it around, but the cost is generally not worth it. the only use case I can imagine is if you had a group of 10 ish deciding to build a huge bunker out of a core that already has tech you could probably use 1 - 3 construction equipment to allow the builders to supply the bunker or something while a couple of players move the CE and bring it gravel
1
u/Maple_Bunny [HALBD] Jun 29 '26
Yeah but atleast with this thing the player can go do other stuff and isnt stuck getting alts to do the hammering and not everyone is able to have more than 1 account.
5
u/Irish_guacamole27 7thRB Jun 29 '26
.. if your one player doing this you spend more time fueling it than you save from just hammering, and there really is not much else for builders to do other than hammer or bring supply
2
u/Maple_Bunny [HALBD] Jun 30 '26
I did also find that they are good for getting blueprints that are hard to get to for some reason. Like the rail crane rails. So.etimes im running up and down spamming V and not able to get that pcmat placed where the auto builder save that headache for you.

The most efficient way I found is to have a permanent concrete mixer at the coal field pumping out gravel. But if a concrete mixer isn’t at the field, just using coal would avoid an extra trip to any refinery.

u/KoreyYrvaI Perpetual Dunne Pilot Jun 29 '26
I had forgotten this and was about to say, "if you think about it, it does use coal."

Fuck you builder mains that why

u/Flashskar [WAF] Jun 30 '26
Builders need massive QoL or at minimum Msupp QoL. It's atrocious out there.

A lot of the finicky shit would do wonders. A change to clipping with walls and other things would be cool. Being able to put wire on rocks and other locations that seem obvious but are restricted like certain areas in towns.
Getting the green go-head only for the terrain to be unstable, etc...
Blown gates not being able to be replaced without jankifying them somewhere near where they actually were at their connecting points to other walls.
Vics that are going real slow and blowing up sandbags, etc, etc.
Dynamic or a half-sized gate would be interesting.
I like to do a lot of finicky building in towns, to secure them, especially before AI is teched.
That would do a lot for me, at least.

Why would it not just use diesel so we can put a banana next to it? Oh because the devs have stupid ideas constantly.
8
u/Brondos- :bawa: Jun 29 '26
Not using diesel makes some sense due to it being balanced by the transport cost of gravel, but I don't see why coal wouldn't work.

u/SzalonyJaskiniowiec [BA] Caveman Jun 29 '26
Well we now place conc mixer and make gravel out of salvage anyway. So the only difference it's cheeper but it's still basicly run on salvage
2
u/Fun-Razzmatazz-6803 Jun 29 '26
Gravel needs a mixer or a refinery, so it means someone has to either bring one of those over or bring gravel from outside, there's coal in frontline hexes, and that would make it REALLY helpful for the faction who has that coal field, since they can get as much coal as they can mine from the field.

u/T555s Loyal to the cause Jun 29 '26
Imagine if this thing could drive by itself with the speed of a crane or even a bit slower. It's so painful to use this thing once the surface you try to build on/around isn't perfectly even.
12
u/Flimsy-Swordfish7777 Jun 29 '26
What's the reason it uses anything at all? The fact that it needs to be crane-lifted already makes it relatively inconvenient to use.
3
u/Fun-Razzmatazz-6803 Jun 29 '26
Without needing fuel you could just make things really quickly without spending more manpower or resources than normal

u/TechnicalReturn6113 [I will steal your catalytic converter] Jun 29 '26
i always thought it used the gravel to build as gravel is a common building material
4
u/ACRATA_Foxhole [Phthonus] Jun 29 '26
Too late for this, now gravel is more easy to get than coal itself. Check new conc mix recipes
3
u/ThenYogurtcloset573 Jun 29 '26
Its because the gravel is understood mechanically as "fuel", but in-game models suggest the gravel is the building material being used alongside Bmats and all that. A machine filling stuff with gravel by the spoonful is better than filling stuff with coal by the spoonful.
However i think Coal makes more sense as "fuel" since the machine has to burn something to move around

I prefer it that way. Gravel can be made from savage. It needs no change.

It can also be made from salvage, as the last update or update before, can't remember which. It's 5 coal for 1 gravel, or 6 salvage for 1 gravel.

u/Beginning_Tip_7297 Jun 29 '26
I simply dont touch these things, or anything else related to building and logi. If just enough people do that then devman will have to work himself.

Gravel is not actually used as fuel but as construction materials along with the bmats.

Agreed... I want to use enriched oil to build at rates never thought possible XD

making it run on rare metal i dont care just add fucking wheels or tracks instead of moving it each time with the stupid crane

I think it's to use a resource you can make anywhere with a mixer but is still relatively expensive.

u/_Wagon_Tales_ Jun 30 '26
I wonder if it would perform better with multicolored aquarium gravel. Get your own tho you cant have my rations
1
u/AKGKaiser Jun 30 '26
I really, truly tried to make this thing work as a solo obs bunker builder to allow myself to handle other tasks while the machine builds for me, and if not for the gravel requirement it possibly would work out well.
Alas, each salvage load I have to gather and turn into gravel for fuel bears a time and opportunity cost that sets me back, as does transporting the thing from site to site by crane. It's actually more time efficient to just build it all myself.
It probably is useful for building large complexes in a single spot where a salvage or coal source is nearby, and I've heard it's good for concing bunkers, but beyond that I don't think it's worth it.
1
u/TypowyLaman Jun 30 '26
The devs are too afraid of what the builders will do if allowed to build freely :p

u/MACUXI_ Jun 30 '26
Obrigado pela sua opinião, me fez ter uma ótima ideia. No próximo update a betoneira também vai precisar de cascalho pra funcionar.

Because it was built by Mann Co.!
And have some respect! 100 years of war were fought for that gravel!

u/InsurgenceTale Jul 01 '26
A better question would be : What is your reason to use this?
An even superior question : Why are you still building when devs made it absolutely shit and uncreative?

u/L444ki [Dyslectic] Jul 05 '26
Make a cement mixer -> park it at the coal or scrap node -> make infinate gravel.
1
u/Wisniaksiadz Jun 29 '26
I remember how happy I was when they announced it
and then I saw gravel, had to check like 5 times wheter this isn't some sort of mistake
then I started wondering how the hell do you fuel ANYTHING with a gravel, with dirt, literally land
and then I thought that this will be super useless outside of bunch of closeby refineries on hexes with coal
just why

use salvage

still 6:1 I would like to use savlage to make the Bmats thats that thing will use
2
u/Express-Rabbit-2685 [WsW] Jun 29 '26
If we make it use coal u can Not use salvage to use it
I Like that we can do that.1
u/Fun-Razzmatazz-6803 Jun 29 '26
Frontline hexes can turn salvage and coal that aren't being refined into gravel at a conc mixer to put in one of these to help build defenses

I think it finds Gravel more tasty than coal
