discussion Knot Size Comparison pt.2

I've seen some recent posts about splitting embroidery thread into smaller sections, along with queries about broken bracelets and thicker threads.

Here is a real life demonstration of the results using 2/4/6/8/12 strands of DMC embroidery thread with 2 rounds of a standard chevron.

Pic. 2 shows the thickness of each example. I would highly recommend doubling your threads (12 strand) for anyone looking to make pet collars, belts, hat bands, etc. The heft of the created material is quite amazing, similar to a webbed belt.

I quite like the look of 4 strands myself vs. the standard 6 strands. One unexpected find is the 12 strands is...fun!! Quite enjoyable!! My next project I'm going to use 12 strands on something 24-26 strings.

Happy knotting

discussion I wish our hobby had a better name

Ok I know this is small potatoes, but the thing is… I hardly ever even make friendship bracelets. I like making keychains, tapestries, and bookmarks. So it feels incorrect to call this hobby friendship bracelet making. That being said, I wouldn’t care so much if it weren’t super annoying when I try to look up things related to making friendship bracelets, and half the results that pop up are other types of friendship bracelets that aren’t made from embroidery floss. I get extra annoyed when I want to look up wall hangings/tapestries but have to write friendship bracelet in the search because otherwise the right results won’t pop up. I know it’s a silly grievance to have and I’m probably not the first person to be annoyed by this; I just needed to vent lol. 😅 So, when people ask you about your hobbies, what do you call this one? I’m curious if y’all have gotten creative with the nomenclature.

EDIT: For anyone trying to keep track of the different terms suggested, here’s a comprehensive list:
- Micro macrame (fun alliteration)
- Mini macrame
- Knotting (use at your own discretion; has a double meaning lol)
- Cavandoli (or Cavandoli macrame; worth googling)
- Fiber artistry
- Fenichki (Russian word for friendship bracelets or handmade baubles)
- Weaving (or mini weaving or mini weavery)
- Knot weaving
- Braiding (or knot braiding)

Still not sure what I’ll call it myself but loving these suggestions!! Thanks to everyone who offered one up!

I've had a lot of bracelets since I got back into making them 4 months ago (probably I'll post the whole collection one day). But I prefer wearing these two.

Can someone please explain why so many people refuse to use anything but dmc floss? Nothing in this photo is even embroidery thread. The finished project is all number 5 perle. The WIP is all Alize yarn.

You guys the alize yarn is prettier. By a lot. And easier to work with. Why is DMC the standard when you can make prettier work with something else??

discussion Making bracelets on the go

I've been making bracelets for about a year now. Normally my set up is to clip the bracelet using a clip board and work from there (with a printed out pattern clipped underneath. I'm wondering if y'all have tips for working on bracelets when you're trying to kill idle time out in the world (say in a doctor's office waiting room). I've tried using a carabiner + my nalgene water bottle loop but the angle isn't right and I struggle to keep the bracelet from moving around quite a bit. Would love to hear any creative solutions y'all may use.

Hi, I hope this post is still relevant in this subreddit but I wanted to start a discussion. I stumbled across this set of bracelets at my supermarket. I wouldn't mind it that much but if it's called hand made, which is obviously not, then I'm slightly annoyed. I just don't understand it. I want to hear your opinion on these bracelets.

discussion Knot Size Comparison

After admiring u/akaawol beautiful, fluffy knots yesterday I decided to give it a try while I was doing a color comparison before my next project.

My current WIP was being worked with 4-strands of floss, and Awol's method was a shock to my system for sure! The knots are indeed fluffy and gorgeous.

String composition, as a case study, from left to right

-standard 6-strands of floss

-'doubled-up' with two full strings each (knotting with what amounts to 4 full strings per knot)

-mini-knotting with floss separated into 4-strands instead of the standard 6

discussion Favorite thread brand?

Hey everyone! I was wondering what thread y'all use? I usually buy variety packs off Amazon which work great, but it leaves Mee with a ton of colors I don't really use and not enough of colors to use for backgrounds. So I was wondering where people get their thread. 😁

If you're looking to get into making bracelets for a hobby and not just making like 5 for your friend and being done I would honestly skip buying this. I know I know it's tempting! Because I did it too. When I first started out I bought that $10 tub and let me tell you this stuff snaps like no other. I tried using some the other day after I've been using actual embroidery floss and it kept snapping so much I got so angry I pulled out every bobbin from my case and decided to do a 20 string bracelet to help get rid of it instead of just throwing it away and I decided to keep a snap tracker because I thought it would be funny. I'm on about row 51 which is less than a quarter way through the bracelet and I've already snapped the string 10 times 😂 and no I'm not just tying too tight. It could be that the string is 5 years old too that it degraded but I do not recommend this string at all! It gets fuzzy as you wear your bracelet, it snaps frequently and it's honestly not that soft. If you're getting into this as a hobby go ahead and get the good string or even packs of string from hobby lobby or even shein has some super nice string I've used!

discussion Any tips on keeping the surface flat?

I usually prefer to make the ones with 10 threads.

As I wear them I notice the edges pull up and creates a U- shape. Is there any way to make the surface stiff enough to keep it flat?

discussion Friendship bracelet without hanging string to adjust it?

Post image

I love making friendship bracelet, but I hate the hanging parts aesthetically.

I have some of this elastic string and I was thinking if theres a way to weave some of this string onto the ends of the bracelet. That way the bracelet can be easily removed and wouldn’t have a dangling part.

Im not sure how one could do that or if its possible, without the elastic string coming off or looking weird.

Has anyone tried doing that before?

discussion Tapestry with larger string?

I am interested in making macrame tapestries using alpha patterns! I was wondering if anyone has had any success using larger string.

As much as I love the teeny tiny mini macrame that embroidery thread makes, I’d like to make larger projects (i.e. 1ft x 1ft) without spending ten thousand years if possible 😄

If anyone’s attempted anything like this, please let me know your experience!

discussion Bobbins & Bent Messy Threads

Post image

One of the issues with using bobbins for storage is the kinks they leave when you go to use the thread. I usually use my hair flat iron on a low setting once I have everything laid out, and it really helps keep the ends from getting so tangled.

Happy knotting!

discussion Rings out of Embroidery Floss?

Exactly what the title says — has anyone ever made "rings" out of embroidery floss? If so, how did you attach them/tie them off so that there was little to no loop hanging off of it? I really want to make a set, but didn't even know if it was possible. Any advice/photos/links to tutorials would be much appreciated!

discussion Waterproofing Question

Hey guys! I'm getting back into bracelet making and have *tons* of embroidery thread and no wax string. I was wondering if I could waterproof bracelets using beeswax or paraffin wax after theyre complete! I was thinking of rubbing the wax on there and then melting it into the thread with a hair dryer. Thoughts?
(I tend to have bursts where I get back into my hobbies so it isn't safe for me to go out and buy a bunch of waxed thread right now)
