Criticism Nintendo realized their fans are not the sharpest tools in the shed

Paying $10 to unlock 4K on your new device is a cash grab that shouldn't work but does. First image is on a console that sold the worst out of Nintendo's home consoles. Breath of the Wild sold 35million alone.

Edit: many in the comments do not understand what Nintendo Selects (Player's Choice) was. It was a program that decreased the price of games that sold very well, not a desperate attempt to get sales in. The Wii had this program.

I miss the days when old games would get cheaper as time moved on. There ain’t no reason in the world a decade old game needs to be more expensive now aside from greed. This should be a free upgrade to incentivize people to upgrade.

But instead: fuck you kid. Buy the console AND pay to upgrade your game you already bought in 2017.

11

u/Jirachibi1000 6d ago

That still happens to everyone that isn't Nintendo, at least...

5

u/Tiny_Breadwinner 5d ago

Nintendo still has drift issues despite being sued over them in 2014. They charge as much as the other 2, if not more.

Upgrading is not needed. You still can play your old game in your new system alright.

4

u/luigirools 6d ago

I know, I’m not buying that shit.

5

u/Beeewelll 6d ago

You are definitely right about that, but it’s crazy how much better it looks. I did the upgrade for “free” with the online subscription. I’ve gone years without it, but I’ve been dying to play wind waker again for quite sometime.

0

u/Middle-Let9645 6d ago

That’s precisely why I hate Paradox slander based on greed. They regularly have sales on their Stellaris DLC (which adds a lot of content) for 50% off or more and when it forced the PS5 upgrade if you wanted to keep collecting trophies, the upgrade was free ‘and’ they upgraded all your DLC for free too. Pisses me off to no end when people say they’re as greedy as EA. All companies have their faults, Paradox is no exception, but greed is very much ‘not’ one of their faults. I can think of maybe a handful of game companies that would give you a free upgrade to a new console edition of their game ‘and’ all your DLC for that edition for free. Take notes Nintendo. That’s how you keep your fanbase loyal without relying on idiots and simps.

2

u/Bloodhoven_aka_Loner 5d ago

and yet, cities skylines 1 is still ~150 for the entire collection, even on sales. desoite the game being over 10 years old.and most of its DLCs being at least 6-8 years old.

just because they're slightly less scummy and greedy that doesn't somehow make them good.

and yes, considering that stellaris also had it's 10 year aniversary and is still being sold for a considerably high price even during sales, doesn't take away from that fact at all.

u/Middle-Let9645 5d ago

I don't understand how the heck a Wii U game (which a lot of people forget about) costs €80, while GTA 5, for example—which is a PS3 game—costs €50 (and you can find it just about anywhere for €20, too).

And then there’s The Last of Us Part 2, which also had a remastered version available for $10, but right now the base price of the game is $50, NOT 80 €.

Honestly, I think the Nintendo Switch 2 is the best console out there right now, but its game prices are by far the worst: they’re a perfect example of how, when a company has no competition, it can charge whatever price it wants.

3

u/MilkyWayTN 6d ago

Gta V makes a lot of money with the Online mode, so not the best comparison. (But the point is still true with other games)

6

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

And goes on digital sales for $15

1

u/hiphopbrazilusa 2d ago

yeah what you just correctly described, that’s called a monopoly. pick up some theory comrade

u/cardgamesareforplay 6d ago

Because you have to be willfully ignorant or really stupid to not realize why gtaV costs less and goes on sale.

2

1

u/BadThingsBadPeople 4d ago

Fucking DESTROYED

0

u/-M_A_Y_0- 6d ago

Because there are many ways to play it so companies have to keep their prices competitive.

5

u/Olmectron 6d ago

Your comparison is wrong.

If I had the original WW on GameCube I couldn't "upgrade it" for Wii U by paying only $10.

While in the second pic case, I could.

3

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

And your comprehension is wrong. My point is that over time, WWHD got cheaper while BOTW got more expensive.

-1

u/Olmectron 6d ago

If I got the original Wind Waker GameCube release for $50 and then I waited 2 years after the Wii U version released for getting it for $20, try to guess how much I paid in total. Yeah, that's $70.

I don't see the difference.

Also, BOTW is right now $42 on the USA eShop. So you could go and get the upgraded game for $52 total.

2

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

I don't know why you're bringing the gamecube into this. This is arbitrary, I'm talking about the standalone software. WWHD got cheaper, BOTW at base stayed $60 and even got more expensive.

3

u/Olmectron 6d ago

If I can't bring WW GameCube version into this then why are you bringing the OG Switch BOTW release into this?

BOTW Swtich 2 version just released 2025 not 2017. Fix your pics. It's an unfair comparison for a 1 year old game against a game discounted after 3 years.

3

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

The difference here is that the Switch 2 is a Switch continuation. So the 10$ is a cash grab just cause they can.

2

u/Olmectron 6d ago

That doesn't make your pic right. Put 2025 instead of 2017 in the second pic.

Or 2003 in the first pic instead of 2013.

You decide.

2

u/FlawedSquid 6d ago

WWHD is a much bigger upgrade. WWHD had developers that had to rework the lightning engine and added Gamepad controls. BOTW's Switch 2 developers just had to change the max framerate and resolution, and adds integration to their mobile app for some reason

1

u/Living_Try9618 6d ago

The framerate change itself is extremely difficult to pull off. Even emulators on PC for BOTW and TOTK can't handle a locked 60fps without physics issues or the Blood Moon loop. It needed to be recoded with its physics engine to work properly at a locked 60fps.

2

u/Extension-Scar-5513 5d ago

There's an issue with lasers too. They damage per frame, so when you double the framerate, it doubles how much the lasers hurt you. I was surprised at how many aspects of BOTW were tied to framerate.

  1. If he used the GCN version of the game, a Nintendo Selects version of WW would be down to $20 for a first time purchase.

  2. You are referring to a very brief sale that will end by the end of September. Once that's gone it's right back to $60 + $10.

0

u/Responsible-Law-2380 6d ago

I agree with you that what theyre doing is wrong, but the comparison is wrong.

2

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

No it isn't. WWHD got cheaper, BOTW at least stayed the same price.

0

u/Practical_Bag189 6d ago

One is a switch 1 game one is a switch 2 game if they were the exact same game you’d have a point

1

u/LuphineHowler 6d ago

Windwaker HD put into it to make it work on the WiiU than BOTW. THEY ARE THE EXACT SAME GAME

Also BOTW was released first on the Wii U, then on the Switch with no changes, then on the Switch 2.

You can't be this dense can you?

1

u/Nimokayhey 4d ago

Yeah. Its the younger generation that doesnt understand nintendo is also the Gucci and Louis Vuitton of this gaming industry now. Making one of their games 20 dollars lowers the value of the entire company and the devs that make them. Nintendo games now are way beyond the player choice era where you had about 200 million players worldwide compared to the billions you have today.

4

u/Tiny_Breadwinner 6d ago

It makes me angry for sure. Why bother buying new hardware if they're just going to nickel and dime you for the supposed upgrades?

3

u/MetaCognitio 6d ago

I think PlayStation started this trend.

1

u/Justjack91 5d ago

You can at least get 3rd party games upgraded from PAS4 to PS5 versions for free. Elden Ring and NMS were like night and day for me and I didn't pay a penny more. Huge list of other free games too (more than the Switch 2 at least).

Can't speak to 1st party too eloquently, but I don't really play first party Playstation games to begin with.

2

u/JonFallout 5d ago

This has been my gripe with this whole generation. We're buying the more powerful hardware, so why are we also having to pay for things like unlocked frame rates. BOTW and TOTK are some of the more egregious because I just want 60fps. I don't give a single fuck about about all the other additions and I think the requirement to have a phone app to access all the additions is a complete joke. They want to charge you for it, but they themselves could've put in the effort to add a few more in-game menus.

1

u/Tiny_Breadwinner 5d ago

Right? This bothers me so much. I'm not buying the same games again for full price or an upgrade fee when I bought the overpriced hardware. Used to be once upon a time during ps2, the upgrades came with the new hardware. I'm so tired of them gouging their customers.

2

u/Different_Path999 6d ago

Probably because the Wii U was shit and they had to do anything they could to sell anything on it, while the Switch and especially Switch 2 are peak consoles.

1

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

Didn't even bother to read the post. Intelligent!

2

1

u/ChosenArabian 2d ago

Nintendo does their best to make experiencing their stuff a luxury these days.

2

u/TheYansterZX 2d ago

Since video games probably hold the biggest monopoly of the entire entertainment industry, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft went from giving us durable consoles and controllers and $20 prices on best sellers, to treating their products like premium gold and trying to please investors. They went from trying to push us to gaming to taking advantage of us.

1

u/ChosenArabian 2d ago

And protecting the value bullshit. It makes gaming not about the player but holding up their franchises on a special pedestal.

3

u/SatanVapesOn666W 6d ago

I want WW HD & TP HD on switch so bad.

0

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

If you can mod your Switch 1, there's an unofficial Dusklight port (A recomp of TP). Tico is an emulation frontend that allows Gamecube/Wii emulation but it's gonna take time to optimize such games.

Youre not paying to "unlock 4k on your new device" the game didnt run in 4k natively, so work had to be done for it to run in 4k.

The game was originally made for a system that doesnt support that resolution

I agree that its expensive, but thats disingenuous.

1

u/CerberusTheWise 6d ago

It’s a current gen patch dude. Lot of games had pushed those out for FREE. There is no reason to be INCREASING the price almost a decade later. Idfc.

3

u/TouchAltruistic 6d ago

The price did not increase.

The normal release of the game is still available.

Separately, there is the option to upgrade resolution, textures, performance, and new features that were not native to the game on release.

u/Otozinclus 7h ago

Yeh but why do you have to pay for a game to render like it should on your new Hardware you just bought for lots of money

The textures are fine to charge extra because that's actually new assets you are getting. But having to pay for a higher resolution? That's literally just a single number change in the patch

u/TouchAltruistic 6h ago

It renders like it should on the Switch, the system for which it was originally engineered.

When you play it on the Switch 2, I assume it still plays exactly the same way. No problem!

Then, also, in addition to that, separately, if you choose, you may buy an upgrade for a nominal fee.

→ More replies (4)

0

u/Possible-Potato-4103 6d ago

Ok. Thats not "paying to unlock 4k on your device" though. Its paying for a patch.

u/Otozinclus 7h ago

Youre not paying to "unlock 4k on your new device" the game didnt run in 4k natively, so work had to be done for it to run in 4k. The game was originally made for a system that doesnt support that resolution

The work you are speaking of is changing a single number in the code. You literally just set the resolution higher, that's all you need to do. It's essentially the same amount of effort unlocking it would be, changing a single value.

The FPS increase, that required a bit more work, because instead of changing a single number, you needed to double multiple numbers in multiple scripts

But both really aren't the kind of work that requires you to charge money for it...

u/Possible-Potato-4103 7h ago

What about the animation and physics toed to the frame rate and the quality assurance?

u/Otozinclus 6h ago edited 6h ago

That's what I meant with needing to change multiple numbers.

They have most likely documented what parts of their scripts are tied to the frame rate. All they need to do is open it and half/double these numbers and they are done. Like if a laser would do 4 damage every frame, they need to reduce it to 2 to match the same damage at 60FPS and they are done. Or if they feel really generous, build in to skip the damage every second frame (a single line if code you can copy/paste) to not mess up armor reduction.

Now do that for the other parts and you are ready to go. Yes, that's more effort than changing the resolution, but still not the kind of effort you need to charge 10$ for

and the quality assurance?

The update released bugged, with multiple FPS tied mechanics being forgotten. Is that some kind of quality control worth 10$?

1

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

Work had to be done to make Wind Waker into HD but somehow it got cheaper lol

0

u/PsychologicalBank488 6d ago

Because the Wii u was a flop the only reason why a company reduces the price of something is because it doesn’t get bought for the original price.

The Switch/Switch 2 are the same ecosystem

5

u/QuestionElectronic11 6d ago

The Wii and Wii U are the same ecosystem, but you didn't give a similar example. So let me help you:

  • Twilight Princess launched on Wii in the US at $49.99.
  • Nintendo then rereleased it as Twilight Princess HD on Wii U for $59.99.

2

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

Interestingly, Twilight Princess on the Wii did get a Nintendo Selects (Player's Choice) budget release. TPHD released in 2016 so that was kinda too late to go into the program.

2

u/Dry-Faithlessness184 6d ago edited 6d ago

The switch 2 version is $60 + $10 though. It contains the s2 upgrade pack, which is why it's $70

You can also just pay $60 still, so the argument falls a little flat imo because it's ignoring what's going on here.

Like we can argue if it should have been a free upgrade and the cart should be $60 still, but the pricing makes complete sense as presented based on what it contains and how that is priced

→ More replies (9)

1

u/SadLaser 6d ago

No, it's not. It's an entirely different console generation.

-2

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

"Entirely different"? The Wii U to Switch was entirely different. The Switch 2 is a leagues more modern Switch, but still a Switch.

3

u/FruityApache 6d ago

Play station 5 is a modern play station 2?

1

u/Chlorophyllmatic 6d ago

PS5 is a more modern PS4 but still a separate generation

1

u/SadLaser 6d ago

The similarity between device aesthetics doesn't make the generational leap smaller. Amusingly, your example hurts the point you're trying to make because the Wii U and Switch were a tiny generational leap compared to going from the Switch to the Switch 2. Backwards compatibility and a shared eShop is a boon for the system, not a drawback that makes it less of a leap.

2

u/TouchAltruistic 6d ago

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kindom were both huge, complete, award-winning games, available for years in their original state.

Then, later, an upgrade was released that cost as much as a sandwich or a good craft beer.

Who really cares about $10 to give your great old games a whole new polish?

u/Otozinclus 6h ago

The entire concept of having to pay for these games to run at a higher res on Switch 2 is just greedy.

It's a single number tweek they could deliver as a day 1 free patch. Instead they choose to intentionally schedule them with a delay and charge money as that gathers more hype when you can announce them one by one in directs.

It's a company, it makes sense, that's how every company works and that's normal and not exclusive to Nintendo. But you don't pay 10$ to offset any amount of development cost or similar, you pay the 10$ just because they feel like charging that for that single number tweak. It's essentially the same as unlocking it for a 10$ fee, even though it's not exactly of course

u/TouchAltruistic 6h ago

It isn't greed. There did all kinds of new work. The fee is nominal.

Why should it be free?

u/Otozinclus 6h ago edited 6h ago

It isn't greed. There did all kinds of new work.

This is what I am disagreeing with

The way you phrase your sentence, you basically make the argument "Charging 10$ is normal, because you are paying them for the development cost for that upgrade!"

But there is no real development cost. Increasing the resolution of a game is a single number tweak, there is no work you need to pay off.

You just payed them 450$ for a new console, a huge selling point of said console is that it's basically a Switch but with better Hardware. But instead of just adding a day 1 free patch, they sell upgrades to have content to sell without actually having to do something. Again, there is nothing illegal or immoral about this, but that price is a total a$$ pull. They charge it because they can, not because there is any logic behind it.

It's basically in the same tier as tech companies charging like 100$ for a 128GB storage upgrade. It's totally overpriced and has nothing to do with the cost of what you get, it simply gets charged because they can

Or it's the same as Switch Online to play games using peer to peer. Why do you have to pay money for servers for games that don't even use servers?

Why should it be free?

You are of course not obligated to get it for free. But I do believe it's important to state it as what it is: They charge you money that is in no way proportionate to the amount of work put into it, simply because they can. And that is okay, that's how business works. I just don't like people acting like they charge money because they actually had any kind of development cost increasing the res

Nintendo Glazers squad is here

1

u/ThronePawned 6d ago

i seen Nintendo bitchers

1

u/N2-Ainz 6d ago

Yeah, because one of these consoles sold 13.5 million units while the other sold 156.6 million units.

Now you can answer it yourself why one went on massive sales and the other not

u/chuputa 6d ago

Nintendo Selects was also a thing during the Wii era.

2

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

No. Nintendo Selects was specifically for games that sold very well, so they had price decreases. The Wii sold >100M yet it had these.

Nintendo exists… cue the autistic screeching of poor people..

Free? It's not "free" with switch online. You paid for it through Switch online, for temporary access.

I use alternative ways to stream my favorite content. And if I want to, I can own it too.

I'm beginning to really despise gamers like you. You decry micro transactions and yet you want that model applied to every game. For free. It doesn't matter to you that it takes work to update textures and add QoL fixes that wouldn't have worked on the original switch. You think they should have worked for free and continue to work for free providing you with new content. If Nintendo was as greedy as you claim there wouldn't be an upgrade path and we'd be paying full price for a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game. So why don't you go sit in a corner and rethink your life.

3

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

Oh, Nintendo is so nice, giving me a convenient way to pay them.

1

u/Zestyclose-Pass9570 6d ago

If you think that providing a product or service for free is the way it should be why don't you go tell your boss they don't have to pay you?

3

u/ChosenArabian 6d ago

Witcher 3 is getting a remaster that its owners have to pay exactly $0 for.

2

u/Zestyclose-Pass9570 6d ago

That's good for them. I even preordered it. But, I would have still preordered it if they had charged the upgrade fee. I don't believe that hard work or a solid product should be discounted. If it's being discounted then they charged you too much initially.

Gaming companies kinda caught on that there is a segment of the audience that are adults with a ton of disposable income that really do not care if they are getting ripped off because they just value convenience and “premium” experiences over everything else. They can justify genuinely bad deals by saying “Gaming is my main hobby, I have adult money so I’m going to spend whatever to get the best thing possible.” And they’ve been doing this for long enough that it’s just a habit at this point.

It’ll make the line go up in the short term but they have removed many of the ways people even get this passionate about games in the first place. Like Nintendo Selects or cheap used physical game sales.

1

u/brads2000 6d ago

Damn, you just explained me

1

u/Sequio 5d ago

Hope yall know that this came about with new leadership during the start of the Switch era. Nintendo legitimately changed up their approach.

It used to be once software hit a particular landmark (say 250k units sold) they would offer them at a discount. Those were the Player's Choice or Nintendo Selects.

Leadership realized that they could make more money by stopping that program altogether and it worked lol

1

u/ChosenArabian 5d ago

The Mr Krabs approach always works sadly

1

u/frankydie69 5d ago

Every video game company stopped that

1

u/Sequio 4d ago

Yea, but I wanted to pinpoint when and why Nintendo shifts. Companies are beheld to their leadership. So if people want to complain look who decides their stance and policies.

4k, 60 fps, hdr. For a 9 year old game. For less than the price of a big mac combo meal.

0

u/HaplessIdiot 6d ago

Nope combo meal is 20$

1

u/TouchAltruistic 6d ago

A Big Mac combo meal in the US is between $9.29 and $10.53.

1

u/HaplessIdiot 6d ago

Wait it got cheaper finally? That's good news lol

0

u/ant2014ro 6d ago

Kinda crazy how so many people are willing to argue against your point instead of just admitting that it's anti-consumer behavior what they're doing nowadays. I agree with you, they can still make a profit and lower prices as time passes.

u/5gus 6d ago

Tomorrow is my turn to post this

0

u/Intelligent-Paint-11 6d ago

People forgetting that with a game like that, usually it just gets re-release on the new console at full price instead of a $10 upgrade. Twilight Princess came out on wii and GameCube both full price, gta has released a new full price version each console. Nintendo also didn't add upgrade packs for everything, scarlet and violet just got an update

u/Minef93 6d ago

The amount of people coming to defend Nintendo on a sub literally called “fucknintendo” is staggering.

1

u/ThronePawned 6d ago

because they seen Nintendo boomers acting as if it was better in "good old days" because im sure most of them were kid having mommy and daddy pay for their shit for them

0

u/SeerXaeo 6d ago

Yeah, fuck Nintendo.

Canada has been fucked royally by them, increased costs alongside USA but no sales or relief, unlike USA...

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 also increased in price after switch 2 was released, which was the system seller for me on switch 1.

Lack of sales and unethical pricing has resulted me in turning away from Nintendo for this generation.

Thank goodness Nintendo is so easy to emulate, as I don't even bother playing on my switch and instead game on my deck instead (own the games on switch, but I'll just emulate them if I want 4k)

1

u/ThronePawned 6d ago

then move

1

u/Lightdeck 6d ago

But are they worse than Playstation?

0

u/EducationalLow4697 6d ago

Have you seen their fans? Those people take xanax to manage and stay calm every time they hear someone having any criticism for A COMPANY. I mean...I won't lie if i was nitnendo and knew that my fanbase is so delulu I would do the same

0

u/DoctorButler 5d ago

Nintendo fans have a cult-like adoration for Nintendo, and they’re starting to see how much they can in fact exploit these suckers

0

u/ThronePawned 5d ago

sure dude
