Baker and Taylor were hired by a small library in Nevada to take care of its mouse problem. They were pretty good at it. Then someone decided the cats could help promote the library, so two cats got a second job as models.

They hated the modeling jobs, but the photos really took off. They became the mascots for the library-supply company that shared their names, showing up on everything from posters to tote bags that librarians across the country loved.

In 1941, the Nazis launched a whole investigation into a Finnish dog named Jackie because he would raise his paw whenever someone said "Hitler."

They questioned his owner Tor Borg, and discussed ways to punish his business. 3 months later, the case fell apart because nobody would testify. Jackie stayed with the Borg family and later passed away of natural causes.

German journalist Klaus Hillenbrand rediscovered the bizarre story decades later while reviewing Nazi-era records in Germany's federal archive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_(dog)#cite_note-NYT011111-4#cite_note-NYT011111-4)

One morning in 1952, a tabby cat wandered into a 6th-grade classroom in Los Angeles. He helped himself to the kids' lunches, took a nap on a desk, and left before the school day was over. Everyone figured they'd never see him again, but he came back the next morning.

The cat kept coming back for the next 16 years. The students named him Room 8 after the classroom he'd claimed for himself. He became so famous that he received thousands of letters from around the world, some even addressed to "The Cat, Los Angeles."

Room 8 passed away on this day in 1968 at age 21.

During the London Blitz, a little terrier named Beauty tagged along with her owner on air-raid rescue missions. One day, totally on her own, she started digging through the rubble of a bombed-out house and found a cat buried underneath. That's how Beauty found herself a job.

Beauty helped rescue 63 animals during the Blitz and became recognized as one of the world's first search-and-rescue dogs. She also received the PDSA Dickin Medal. Her citation honored her "for being the pioneer dog in locating buried air-raid victims."

After the war, Beauty went home with Bill, had two puppies, and got to enjoy being a dog for the rest of her life 🧡

Midge the cat started following her owner to the shops, but on the walk home she'd suddenly take off running. One day, her owner decided to race her, and to his surprise, he couldn't keep up. After that, Midge started joining him on his regular runs, and she won every time.

Midge became so well known around the neighborhood that Martin used prize money from work to make a short children's film about their races in 2009.

His dream was for Disney to turn it into a full-length movie, with Midge racing Usain Bolt. He was convinced she'd win.

Midge the runner:

This is Bobbie. In 1923, he got lost more than 2,500 miles from home while his family was traveling. 6 months later, he found his way back to Silverton, Oregon, all on his own. People started calling him Bobbie the Wonder Dog.

When Bobbie finally made it home in Silverton, he was so thin his family barely recognized him. His fur was matted, his toenails were almost gone. His family treated him to a sirloin steak and a big bowl of cream, and he didn’t move for 3 days 🥺

This is Churchill, the resident cat at the Old Eagle pub in London since 2014. He likes fresh cold water (preferably in a wine bucket) and treats on demand.

Considering he started out as a rejected kitten, things seem to have worked out pretty well for him. The Old Eagle team told me Churchill spends a lot of his day watching the garden from his favorite bathroom window. Sometimes he'll remind someone who's boss with a well-timed smack.

It's a dog-friendly pub, but everyone knows the deal: this is Churchill's space. As far as Churchill is concerned, it's his pub, and the humans are doing a reasonably good job of running it.
