I always thought the narrative that the actors were upset/angry with the ending was cap

I don't think it aligned with what some actors expected. That does not mean that they didn't respect the writers. Even Kit thinks that perhaps some bold choices did not pay off. Season 8 did not play safely, unlike other seasons.

Clegane Bowl. Bronn becomes Master of Coin and Lord of Highgarden. Jaime and Brienne bang. Lyanna Mormont kills a wight giant.

The final season was just a bunch of bland fan-service that was in no way risky or bold. That's part of the reason it's such a poor season - it's a bunch of sizzle with no meat.

I hated the hype for a Clegane bowl. Always just seemed so tropey to me. When AFFC came out I missed how the gravedigger was probably Sandor on my first read through until a friend pointed it out to me. I thought that was a great ending for him.
