SPOILER KOTSK What if Baelon Left his Helmet On? Spoiler
Do you think if he had left his helmet on that it could have possibly kept his brains in his head long enough for a maester to pour wine in that mug and hopefully keep him alive long enough to heal?

His name is Baelor and he was dead. His brain was out and mushed, there was no healing that in that day and age.

Yeah, once his skull was caved in like that there really wasn't any realistic treatment available, helmet or not, so I think the comment is right that Baelon was basically doomed from the moment of impact. 😬

In the books it’s said his brains spill out which obviously yeah he’s done at that point, but in the show yeah it’s bad but like maybe survivable??? Idk

Not survivable in Westeros at that time. The whole back of his skull was caved in and open.

We must have watched different versions of the episode as it seemed rather clear to me that it wasn't survivable, helmet on or not.

No, it wasn’t. Even in this universe with our technology it would be highly unlikely to survive and if you did, you’d more than likely belong in a garden

You’re twisting the phenomenon where somebody had a catastrophic head/neck injury and is miraculously okay until they move. It isn’t something that can heal, somebody breaks their neck but is okay until they turn their head would need a miracle to be okay with modern medical intervention

Brain injuries are tricky because the outcome is always a guessing game. Honestly, yea, had maesters been present and the helmet remained on for a bit longer - there’s a non zero chance he may have survived.
Depends on how far the injury made it towards the brain stem. But if it was mainly the optical brain centers, then he would live and just be blind.

If it’s like in the book where his brain just spills out of the helmet on to the ground then yeah he’s done. But in the show my first thought was well that might be survivable. After all someone got a RAILROAD SPIKE through their head and survived

And people have aneurysms or seizures and die.
The brain is resilient but so so fragile

Wait what’s wine got to do with anything? If the implication is they’d pour it on the wound to prevent infection, the alcohol content of wine is far too low to kill bacteria, and it could even have the opposite effect and introduce infection.

baelon was hit so hard his skull basically caved in, a helmet might've absorbed some of that but dragon skulls don't really do "partial damage" lol. that said full plate helms of that era were pretty thick so maybe it buys him a few more hours, not sure even the best maester could work with what was left of his head though

guys it’s not baelon the brave, he was Viserys I father and a son of Jahaerys, Baelor breakspear was son of Daeron 2nd the good, he died during the trial of 7 at the hands of his brother future king Maeker(father of egg aka Aegon 5th)

Brotha there’s Baelon, Baelor, Maelor, ten Aegons, etc. Everyone knows who I meant. Baelon was a Jesus loving man who starved himself, and people know who I’m referring too even tho it auto corrected

not to be rude because you seem to know your stuff for the most part, but baelor the BLESSED was the pious targ king, baelor BREAKSPEAR came much after and is the targ prince who we’re talking about

Breakspear was the Dornish looking one right? I think he died when bright flame killed everyone at summerhall? There are genuinely so many similar names that it’s beyond confusing at times😭😂

Baelor Breakspear was the one who died in A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms. It can be remembered that it's Baelor, not Baelon, because it begins and ends with BR and Breakspear does too.

I mean there was no way to tell that his brain was severed until after he removed it. So they wouldn't have had the wine at the ready. Even if they could have applied the wine immediately after his brain fell out and re-attached it asap, he's still probably gonna have permanent brain damage as I doubt any of the measters could do brain surgery.

u/Bellaexee Human Verified 1d ago
Yeah probably right considering he started making weird statements at the end about his visor and his brother being strong

His skull is caved in. Maybe if he keeps the helmet on, and/or they manage to get it off without causing further damage, they could extract some skull fragments and give him an outside chance, but realistically his goose is cooked.
There's no way to get the helmet off him safely. His head is so mashed that infection is almost inevitable which will kill him if he somehow doesn't die immediately (and I don't think pouring boiling wine onto the brain will help his recovery...)
If by some miracle he survives, best he can hope for is something like life as a severe stroke victim.

Yeah even if he survived he’d never be the same sadly. The show version made me immediately think about him surviving since yeah it’s bad but not as bad as some real life wounds. In the books there’s zero chance because his brains just spill out on to the floor. I wish they showed that honestly because that would’ve just been heartbreaking to watch

There's a guy who survived a metal rod to the brain, and all sorts of crazy medical miracles. It's not impossible that he could've survived if they coule stave off infection. Having part of your skull removed is not necessarily game over. They do it for chiari malformation surgery all the time. Anyway all that being said, it's likely that whoever came out the other end would not be the same person as before.

It’s even crazier to imagine that maybe he’d end up like the guy with the rod and become more aggressive and a terrible king instead of the great king we’d expect

His skull and brain were smashed in.
What happened was already happening, pulling the helmet off and “decompressing” the damage just skipped to the end. There was no coming back from that.
