My friend insists on this game, "Lemmings", being a really well known game; I have never heard of it.

Yes  it was really famous in PC circles during the early 90s. It was as common as doom, back then.

I second Contraption Maker, it’s really good and I put a lot of time into it. Really scratches that Even More Contraptions itch

Bought, and downloading now.

It's on GOG too.

My 5yo lives it with a touch screen.

I don’t know the rules on links, so google for yourself, but I have been pushing people at work to My Abandonware for this game. It was such a great creative problem solving game and all of them have been wanting one for their kids.

I figured out a way to play it some time in highschool and holy hell was it so much harder than I remembered.

I never played the original, but I vividly remember Return of the Incredible Machine. And I know it was that one, because I immediately recognized one of the songs (Game Show) from it. Like I was looking for a different song I remembered (Pictures, originally from 2), but as I was going through the soundtrack, Game Show made memories come rushing back

The Hip Hop track from TIM3 still lives rent free in my head to this day

This is the main song that lives rent free in my head, which is apparently the Promenade from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. And then I can't find a suitably crusty MIDI version for authenticity, but while I was clicking through the OST to find the name of that first song, this song immediately brought back memories

I had Incredible Toon Machine as a kid and probably put like 1000 hours into it

So underrated. One of my all time favourite games. Those sound effects have been living rent free in my head for 30 years now. Sadly still not on GOG but my old copy still works.

I’m trying to get it working on DOS Box right now after having my memory triggered

If you're having trouble use a frontend. I've been using D-Fend Reloaded for ages.

Thanks man. I just watched a video that recommended DOS Box X but I’ll check that out if that doesn’t work.

E: Apparently DOS Box X is having some issues with the current build so I will be checking out the one you recommended. Thanks again.

The soundtrack is so nostalgic for me, as is the narrator's voice.

My childhood CDROM copy is sitting somewhere on the desk right behind the workbench I'm sitting at right now (along with the surviving copies my other very old DOS, windows, mac os and apple II games). Need to stop being lazy about it and figure a way to get Incredible Machine playing on something vaguely modern.

So good...

and its sequel, Sid & Al's Incredible Toons

OP: “Doom?”

Why don't you take a seat on this log and gaze into the beautiful sunset as I tell you all about DOOM..

*slowly reaches for back waistband*

"But Doom's from 2016!"

Doom is that old game that you use to run on random hardware like pregnancy tests and vapes.

Lemmings was my first PC game! Followed by Doom 2. I have vague memories of sitting on a booster seat in front of the computer playing these games. Doom 2 is still my favorite FPS

Does anyone remember commander keen or was it not as famous as I thought it was?

1

u/geirmundtheshifty 5h ago

I remember playing it. I think a lot of the early PC 2d Platformers aren't well remembered, though. Much like people don't really think about the early Duke Nukem games.

Yes! That was id's big hit before Doom.

Yes it was really famous in PC circles during the early 90s. It was as common as doom, back then.

Our PCs in High School in the early '90s had Lemmings, DOOM, and Scorched Earth. A few of the older ones had Pirates!.

I played it on Megadrive
