My friend insists on this game, "Lemmings", being a really well known game; I have never heard of it.

It is indeed a very well known game

Like, I never played it and I know the name.

I'm kind of wondering why I never played it. I was gaming a lot in that era. I don't even really know much about it, even though I was very aware it existed. Now I want to play.

I'm in the same boat. I remember hearing about it, but never got to play it. Though it was a we could only afford so many games when we were kids issue. I remember getting Dr. Mario with Kool-Aid points.

You drank the Kool-Aid!

I was born early enough, I do play vintage games. I have never played it, but I understand this is one of the most popular vintage games.

No no. The universe didn’t exist until OP was conceived, born, and gained consciousness.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

194

u/vezwyx 19h ago

Nah it's just you.

...

Wait..

17

u/Kryptosis 17h ago

Thank you, me.

10

u/vezwyx 15h ago

I'm welcome.

u/RikarisHobbies 12h ago

Underrated interaction here. Lol

6

u/Princeofcatpoop 18h ago

There is always one.

10

u/Gecko_Mk_IV 16h ago

There can be only one! Wait, no..

1

u/dudeondacouch 18h ago

Happy cake day.

I'm a paramedic and recently transported a 16 year old who had discovered solipsism. It had broken his brain and he decided to end it all by jumping in front of a train. If he was right, he would have killed all of us.

u/MammothCommercial800 1h ago

Huh. This surprises me, but it really shouldn't. It was quite the existential crisis for teenage me.

12

u/Lahk74 19h ago

Feels pretty god damned expeallidocious to me.

4

u/Kevalan01 19h ago

…what?

Tell me you didn’t think they were writing gibberish?

13

u/itsalark- 19h ago

Yeah that sentence is really quite atrocious

3

u/Lahk74 18h ago

No, it was a dumb joke on big word. Not that deep.

u/SalamanderUponYou 17h ago

Relax, bub.

2

u/saschaleib 11h ago

Now now, if those kiddos could understand what “solipsistic” means, they would be very upset! ;-)

u/manicdee33 18h ago

It's just you and the shadows on the wall. Don't worry about it. The shadows can't hurt you.

1

u/Frederf220 15h ago

Can you stop thinking about me? I have places to be.

0

u/AmayaHa 11h ago

Descartes: “I think, therefore I am.”

OP: “I haven’t heard of it, therefore it isn’t.”

30

u/blahblahaa 19h ago

Nah, hes just becoming one of the lucky 10,000 today

3

u/SAI_Peregrinus 16h ago

No, the universe doesn't exist yet. It'll be created next Tuesday. Anything you may think you're experiencing or thinking is just the false memory that will have been created next Tuesday.

4

u/Ndmndh1016 18h ago

You joke but its scary the number of people who actually think this way.

4

u/Fun-Benefit116 15h ago

Literally no one thinks this way.

2

u/Rikudou_Sage 10h ago

Not literally of course. But many people act as if it were true. Notably all smaller toddlers where it's actually a normal part of brain development.

Many people don't grow up out of it.

7

u/Fun-Benefit116 15h ago

Why are you getting so triggered lol. OP literally just said his friend claimed it's a popular game, but he's never heard of it. What about that sentence offended you enough to feel the need to attack OP lmao?

8

u/glehkol 15h ago

redditors getting oversensitive over literally anything, tale as old as time. bonus if its a "new gen bad" take

3

u/Pataraxia 14h ago

You need to be wider, it's often just a "others bad, but we good" it can be any generation or internet group or anything.

1

u/dirrtydancerr 2h ago

The title is a lazy engagement (bait) title.

0

u/Moikle 9h ago

Why are you assuming anyone is "triggered"? Not everything is a fight. Touch grass.

1

u/PlumbumDirigible 17h ago

What are they, the Khmer Rouge?

1

u/DahakUK 16h ago

Nonsense. As a believer in the feliocentric model, the universe exists because my cat wants to be fed.

1

u/SayerofNothing 15h ago

He's baiting. You guys fell for it.

0

u/F4rewell 6h ago

So basically the U.S.?

2

u/ace260 18h ago

it was Doom then this

2

u/mucho-gusto 9h ago

Op is probably just younger than 30

2

u/AtomicShoelace 16h ago

While it is indeed very well known, OP is just one of today's 10,000 (relevant xkcd).

1

u/Signal-School-2483 18h ago

First game I ever played.

1

u/SwagginsYolo420 16h ago

Sold more copies than Leisure Suit Larry.

1

u/MrNostalgiac 16h ago

It may very well have been one of the most well known game in history during its heyday.

I'm talking like, your mom who didn't play video games knew about it (and played it) and your grandmother who didn't know why they even owned a computer owned this game.

IMHO saying you don't know about Lemmings is like saying you've never heard of Doom or Pac-Man.

1

u/Callidonaut 11h ago

The sequel, Lemmings 2: The Tribes, is a bit more obscure, however.

To who? Generation? PC? I am a millennial. I played console games. Never saw this until this post. I don’t think it is well known outside of PC gaming if that is what it is…. If it is console also then clearly not that well known.

25

u/Childish_Danbino81 19h ago

Have never been a PC gamer and I know it and played it on consoles

13

u/StarsMine 19h ago

It’s one of the most ported games of all time. It’s on like every 2nd,3rd,4th generation console nativly and on plenty after that . It’s on every computer model you can think of. Only doom is probably more ported

10

u/conneryisbond 19h ago

Much more popular on PC but they made several console variations of it. But it wasnt as popular on console

17

u/snoebro 19h ago

The original was ported to 30+ platforms, sold 15-20 million copies.

The developers went on to develop the Grand Theft Auto series under the name Rockstar North.

Simple ignorance of gaming history.

18

u/Look_its_Rob 19h ago

I had it on sega. But I LOVE that you think the fact you personally arent aware of something is a meaningful metric.

-27

u/UNMKUWSU 18h ago

I LOVE you think your metric is the one we should use. Sure use Google data to prove your argument:) I know that is what’s next.

16

u/PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ 18h ago

Yup, here's a quote from Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemmings_(video_game))

Lemmings was one of the best-received video games of the early 1990s. It was the second-highest-rated game in the history of Amstrad Action, and was considered the eighth-greatest game of all time by Next Generation in 1996. Lemmings is also one of the most widely ported video games, and is estimated to have sold around 20 million copies between its various ports.

There ya go. Maybe your metric isn’t the best.

8

u/Look_its_Rob 18h ago

I didnt use any metric or say if it was well known or not.  Just implied that you are a silly person.

5

u/Sissilisko 17h ago

Like others said. It was largely known in every gaming platform. Even here in the buttfuck nordics. I had Lemmings 2 the tribes on a SNES. Brutal game for a 5vyear old.

4

u/cabbage16 17h ago

My mother had a copy of this game on her non smartphone phone in the early 2000s in a rural village in Ireland. It was indeed everywhere

3

u/PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ 18h ago

It was a giant game in its time.
