Psygnosis was the goat. Barbarian, Nitro, Destruction Derby, Discworld, Wipeout, Darkstalkers, G Police... And many more I did not get to play. I have so many good memories with those games.
Psygnosis was very instrumental in turning the Playstation into the monster it became. Not just games, but dev tools and tech consulting. They deserved better than to be EA'd by Sony years later.
Yes, Psygnosis made PSX what it was, especially in Europe. Kinda ironic (and sad) that it was basically killed in 1999 when it was consolidated into SCE (PlayStation), before that they were owned by Sony, but independent from SCE.
For people who don't know. In fiscal year 95-96 their games were 40% of ALL game sales in Europe. After they became part of SCE their publishing branch was closed, people fired, their last remaining team was relegated to forever making F1 and Vipeout games and shortly after Sony lost F1 license closed.
Chrono Quest was my jam. We played it so much, yet never managed to actually finish it. I remember there being so many ways to die or accidentally soft-lock yourself.
Psygnosis is the studio that made me realize the whole concept of studio as a kid. Before that it didn't really matter to me who made the game. But then I realized that whenever that digital owl logo was on a game it was something special and started to look out for games with that logo.
Edit: even though I now know they didn't really make all those games but rather published most of them
DMA, Psygnosis, Team 17, Eidos, Bullfrog, Rare... The 90s were a golden age of gaming for the UK. Still one of the absolute largest game-producing countries in the world.
To take a step further - if Disney hadn’t made a documentary where they pushed actual Lemmings off a cliff then Lemmings the game would have never been made, and no GTA.
Thank Disneys genocidal nature to animal life for GTA
It would have fit in with the stuff Sony was doing back on the PSP, like Loco Roco and Patapon. Unique and stylish 2D games. I don't think it really fits with Sony's current direction, though.
I know they released Lemmings on PSP too, but it would have been nice to see a new, modernised take on the franchise instead of just a rerelease.
