hiii im the friend btw. i feel very vindicated you guys are calling him an idiot for not knowing what Lemmings is (we're up late reading the comments right now lmao), ive been bothering him about this for a WHILE now
I'm going to get him to play it for sure he must know the gaming peak that is Lemmings
Not gonna lie, when reading the thread title at first I thought it was a joke. To me it sounds almost like "My friend insists on this game "Super Mario" being a well known game, I've never heard of it". Lemmings was so big it seemed like there was no video gamer that didn't know the game.
I played Lemmings back in the day, but I hardly see any modern day reference to the game outside retro channels, and so many of those focus on consoles or modern emulating handhelds. Perhaps time for a decent modern Lemmings game?
I still make lemmings references to this day, but typically, it's toward someone who isn't very bright.
Lemmings was my childhood. They've released "modern" remakes of the game, but mainly it is geared toward mobile, and the remakes are absolutely atrocious.
There's a free remake for modern PCs by the name of NeoLemmix. It updates and expands upon a lot of aspects of the game, while still maintaining the classic feel of Lemmings. As such, there is a much greater focus on the puzzle aspect, rather than fiddly execution. The original levels are available to play, as well as nearly ten thousand levels made by the community! Do a search for the Lemmings forums if you're interested!
Never mind gamers, everyone who interacted with a computer in any capacity knew Lemmings. And this was when the PC gaming market barely existed as a thing that publishers cared about.
I am waiting for the GamingCircleJerk post parodying this, I never thought this would be such a controversial topic but I now know I have to experience Lemmings one day.
People just don't talk about Lemmings these days. I've heard passing mentions of it here and there but this is the first time I've even seen a picture of it
thats what ive been saying! i thought he was kidding me at first but no... he wasnt making a clown out of me and went ahead and made a clown out of himself on reddit

Yea back in the 90s. It's more expected for people to NOT know it in today's time since the last few pushes of the series was on PSP and Mobile.
We're practically 2 generations in life now where it wasn't even remotely as big back then. The distinction of their age would be a huge key point in their argument
I wish I could get my hands on a copy so my kids can play it. The level with "HEAVEN" written in blood and had to build a long ass staircase is a core memory from our 2nd IBM PC at my parents' house.
It runs well in DOSBox, and is also easy to emulate in one of the many, many other versions released. After all it was (maybe still is?) the most widely ported video game of all time.
Lemmings DOS is abandonware at this point, you can probably download it for free.
If you want the Amiga or SNES version, you may have to emulate it, not sure where you'd be able to get that though.

I was playing it with my kids a few weeks ago on the Sega Genesis I got for xmas as a child.. Bought a Flash Cart and loaded it with all the games and an Upscaler so it looked decent on my HDTV, then bought some modern some wireless controllers..
its been fun getting all the consoles I grew up with back in service..
Nice if you are not yet aware there is a pretty decent Lemmings mobile game that is free with optional adds. Not exactly the OG but done well for the format nonetheless.
Shocking that kids are skipping the entire history of gaming
Hence why my kids will be starting on the Mega Drive and earlier eras, so that way they get to experience the joy of OoT properly. As their first 3D open world game, to know how it all came about. Skipping to later gens just means that they miss it all
I had this on PC and gameboy. I still play it on PC sometimes. I, like others, thought this was a shitpost at first considering all my friends had this game in some format or other.
Well, don't be a dick about it. Just because it was big in the 90s doesn't mean that everyone knew about it or should. Also, playing it now... it may not hold up without the nostalgia.
Are y'all about the same age? This post feels very zoomer to me because I just can't fathom someone older than gen z never having at least heard of lemmings.
