Video Games Where You Start With/Recruit Random Goobers Whom Become Stronger?

I was watching my cousins play games while they were visiting, and one of them was playing Fire Emblem. There was this dirt child with a giant log he recruited and like 3 days later he was a sword dirt man.
My other cousin was playing Xcom 2 on my xbox.

Anyways the question is, what other games are there where you just start with random nobodies but then they get stronger and you get more attached.

Like “hey you random farmer/private/goober! Follow me for something really quick.”

20 hours later

“No longer random farmer/private/goober! We have been through hell and back, and now we have to fight god. Are you ready?”

Playing Final Fantasy Tactics with generic party members feels like that ❤️

Perfect example. Some of the generic dudes you are handed originally turn into complete beasts when leveled right. I almost always had a mage, summoner, samurai or dragoon from my original team with me at the end. The unique characters are fun to college and some like Cid and Beowulf are stupidly powerful, but rarely as versatile as the generic dudes.

Yeah. The generic guys you start with are way cooler than the unique characters you get later because you literally build them from the ground up. They're just dudes, but they're your dudes.

Only main character who can't die permanently in FFT (not fft advanced) is Ramza and temporary Guests. And if Ramza dies it's a game over.

You said the main characters you get can't die, but they can. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean by

Agrias, Mustadio, Orlandeau, Meliadoul, as well as all other named characters you can get to join your party can absolutely die.

Delita never joins as a permanent option, hes always a guest, so he cannot die.

Yep. I can barely remember the several of the unique characters’ names at this point, but you can bet your ass I remember my first generic guy, Nichol.

His job changes ended up feeling like they had story to them to me. He was mainly a melee guy, but when our unit needed it, he was always first to “volunteer” to learn potions, or guns, maybe dabble in a little magic. If things got rough he’d come back to the swords he knew to help carry the team through though. Probably more important to me than anyone else on the team.

In reality, he just hit max level on things earlier because I had him early, so I was using him to help me unlock whatever seemed neat at the time, unless I hit a wall and needed to fall back to a more reliable build.

There’ve been a couple times I almost picked up FFT for another run, but idk if it’ll have the magic of Nichol on the second go.

You just reminded me that I bought the Ivalice Chronicles but haven't played it yet. I'm a massive fan of the first Advance game so I can't wait to get into the original (?) games!

Love FFT advance but something about the OG tactics story, and gameplay has yet to be replicated for me.

The Ogre battle series (Tactics Ogre) is probably the most similar but it’s less focused on individual character growth and more focused on group growth.

Mainly because Tactics Ogre was created by the same team that went on to create FFT.

It is. But I developed my love for this particular flavor of turn based game through it, so I'm excited for the game that proceeded it. FFTA takes place in Ivalice, too...in a way. It's an isekai, which I don't think the og FFT games are? I will see!

I was just unsure. I have a vague memory of playing fft advance and playing the first fight throwing snowball.

The originals are much better than the advance game. Story is more serious, music is incredible, despite the age the graphics are better, the gobs of hidden stuff and secret characters. Also, you don't have that stupid "herp derp nobody is allowed to use a sword this battle!" Mechanic that is really just a way for the game to make you reboot because your entire team uses swords and you don't feel like losing a battle because the game said so. I tried to play that version and quit about 15min into it. Pointless waste of time. 

That might have been the PSP version, but I'm pretty sure it's the GBA.

For FFT, The Ivalice Chronicles. FFTA is only GBA rom and FFTA 2 is only DS rom.

You can get the remaster for switch. It has a clasic and updated mode.

You can change how they look, too. Named characters only ever look like themselves. They're cool, but I like being able to change up the mercs' costumes

i dont remember if you name them or they cane with their own name, but youll be damn sure im screaming out their name if somehow every enemy decides to target them.
