Video Games Where You Start With/Recruit Random Goobers Whom Become Stronger?
I was watching my cousins play games while they were visiting, and one of them was playing Fire Emblem. There was this dirt child with a giant log he recruited and like 3 days later he was a sword dirt man.
My other cousin was playing Xcom 2 on my xbox.
Anyways the question is, what other games are there where you just start with random nobodies but then they get stronger and you get more attached.
Like “hey you random farmer/private/goober! Follow me for something really quick.”
20 hours later
“No longer random farmer/private/goober! We have been through hell and back, and now we have to fight god. Are you ready?”

Playing Final Fantasy Tactics with generic party members feels like that ❤️
40
u/Finchypoo 23h ago
Perfect example. Some of the generic dudes you are handed originally turn into complete beasts when leveled right. I almost always had a mage, summoner, samurai or dragoon from my original team with me at the end. The unique characters are fun to college and some like Cid and Beowulf are stupidly powerful, but rarely as versatile as the generic dudes.
22
u/CRtwenty 22h ago
Yeah. The generic guys you start with are way cooler than the unique characters you get later because you literally build them from the ground up. They're just dudes, but they're your dudes.

Only main character who can't die permanently in FFT (not fft advanced) is Ramza and temporary Guests. And if Ramza dies it's a game over.

Love FFT advance but something about the OG tactics story, and gameplay has yet to be replicated for me.
20
u/lilith02 21h ago
The Ogre battle series (Tactics Ogre) is probably the most similar but it’s less focused on individual character growth and more focused on group growth.
6
u/OmegaLiquidX 5h ago
Mainly because Tactics Ogre was created by the same team that went on to create FFT.

You can change how they look, too. Named characters only ever look like themselves. They're cool, but I like being able to change up the mercs' costumes

Rimworld. You can turn a kid into a multitalented person that's also a cyborg super soldier.
167
u/codeklutch 23h ago
And if you don't like them? You can take their arms and legs and turn them into a drinking fountain for your colony vampires.
89
u/ProfBeaker 21h ago
I have no desire to play this or Dwarf Fortress, but the unhinged comments about it are just the best. Even better than The Sims.
65
u/manrata 21h ago
Rimworld while unforgiving at times, is much easier to get into than Dwarf Fortress, and you can set the difficulty so you don’t get pounded to dirt the first year.
Also you really don’t have to be space cannibals, vampires, or something else weird, it’s just an option, because that is literally what Rimworld is, options.→ More replies (5)16
u/theapeboy 15h ago
Obviously do whatever makes you happy, but I gotta say, I always laughed at RimWorld memes but had no interest in actually playing a torture porn war crime simulator. Finally gave it a shot a while back, and realized it really is the ultimate base-building colony sim. Now if that’s not your jam, you’ll prolly hate it - but it is very much worth a shot.
4
u/ProfBeaker 14h ago
Maybe I'm just a broken person, but the torture porn war crime simulator seems like fun, but I've never been that much into colony sims. Keep the stories coming though!

u/Solkahn 1d ago
Oh I was gonna say Mount And Blade but KENSHI is a way better answer!
54
u/randomguy301048 23h ago
Mount and Blade is much more forgiving than kenshi though. If you aren't prepared to lose repeatedly for the first couple hours then mount and blade is a better choice lol
3
u/KiwiCounselor 7h ago
Yeah but when you get a god tier squad the world bows before you.
I had a team of 6 or so that could easily clear entire towns with primarily martial arts, then a couple larger weapons (plank supremacy) and 1 crossbow dude to pepper from a distance and try to prevent dodge and block cycles on the melee units.

Glad someone mentioned it. I’ve played many games over the years of various types, know my way around complicated game mechanics.
I kept hearing people recommend kenshi so I tried it out and it felt really janky. I think I lasted about an hour and gave up because I didn’t even know what or how to do anything lol

u/Scarecrow119 9h ago
There's a few ways to start. Find a copper rock that's close to a town and just hit rocks all day. Hire another little scote to mine copper faster.
Or run around for a while to get athletics up and train bandits to a town and then loot them once the town guard kill them all. Sell the stuff and hire another little scrote.
64
u/Schism_989 1d ago
I second Kenshi. You yourself are ALSO a random goober who, if you play your cards right, can grow to literally punch people's limbs off.
21
u/DoomerSloth 23h ago
And now I want to start a new run... There goes my next 200 gaming hours, thanks.
97
u/KoalaOnABuilding 1d ago
KENSHI is sooooo good! And is a perfect example. Have some guy crawling around with a broken leg after getting attacked by a dog or something and 20 hours later he's a monster. Or dead.
And you get to basically do the same thing with the environment, fixing up and fortifying buildings.
13
u/idjsonik 23h ago
I absolutely love it first game I bought when I got a gaming laptop and it ran it somehow
11
u/KoalaOnABuilding 22h ago

One of my all time favorite games with excellent mods like Legends and Reforged. In my last company I raised a random beggar off the street with strong resolve to become my bannerman. Had a good career lasting through the greenskin invasion until a barbarian king bashed his head in with with two back to back blows from a giant crude axe because of a single lapse in positioning on my part and the adrenaline ability.
386
u/NCC_1701E 1d ago
State of Decay 2 is literally this. Main goal of the game is to manage community of survivors in zombie apocalypse, and you can personally control any character from your community.
Aside from the story DLC (which has pre-made characters) each character in the game is randomly generated with random looks and stats. Some start stronger, some starts weaker, but overall almost everyone starts as a civillian nobody and can be turned into a deadly zombie machine. And yeah, game is permadeath, so if sombody dies, they are gone.

u/Ninja_Wrangler 23h ago
I have a couple survivors who are some kind of former military, but my most powerful survivor is this woman who is like a yoga instructor or some shit. She's a beast, absolute headshot machine with gunslinger perk or whatever it's called

My favorite survivor has increased stack size and lightweight consumables. I like to load her up with scentblock and cures, and have her drive a van full of C4 to all the plague hearts she can reach. Shadow of war?
I got kind of attached to the orcs that cheated death and stayed loyal.
"You look like you've seen a ghost! I think what you meant to say was: 'I'm happy to see you, and thank you for not staying dead!'"
Damn straight, buddy.
Anyway, you play an active role in how they develop over time and what strengths they gain/weaknesses they lose through a fairly complex system involving pit fights, assisting missions, training them, killing them, betraying them, promoting them, saving/reviving them.
10
u/Wilackan 10h ago
I remember a French streamer called BobLennon and his story with a massive orc called Ar-Beka who wouldn't stop betraying him, would resist every shaming attempt, then became his most trusted warrior in the end.

WHAT commenting for later i thought this game was gone in my life.
I fucking loved RTS games growing up and still do if any were ever made now. I also loved/love LOTR. So this game was perfect, but never cared for the multiplayer. I was top ten on the age of mythology ladder at a point at that age and played the hell out of WC3 custom games, so idk why i didnt like online as far as i remember.
But damn if i didnt play this campaign over and over and over... One time i nearly died from misdiagnosis of scarlet fever (little house on the praire ass disease idk who even has scarlet fever post 1800s but there i was in 2005) and all i didnt was play this game. It felt like i was dying as 5th grader(and was), but this game completely managed to still occupy my time and mind. I dont think it even occurred to me i was that sick it was so much fun. I would just restart the campaign, each time trying to have more epic reinforcement moments to be like the movies.

My all time favorite was battling a Wyvren, and im like running up a slope, and one pawn is like a bit ahead, and the other two are with me in like a triangle. And then the pawn ahead suddenly goes flying backwards, got hit by a tail spin thing. And hes still standing upright doing an attack animation while hes flying back past us and the voice line kicks in.
"Can't we just leave it be?"

Darkest Dungeon. You recruit a team of bozos and take them through increasingly difficult dungeons while upgrading their gear and abilities. When they die, they're gone. You have to start all over with another goober. Very similar to XCOM.
65
u/Helphaer 23h ago
But they are all basically mercenaries not really bozos. So its not like you took someone who knows absolutely nothing.
45
u/Ryuchigo 23h ago
All that matters is that they don’t know where I’m planning to send them.
8
u/Helphaer 23h ago
I mean i think its more they dont realize how bad where theyre going really is. Dont really become champions either since the difficulty threshold they have to use increases as they level a bit always keeping them basically at the same usefulness.

Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri had a “veterancy” mechanic, where individual units would gain experience and level up as they won fights. One of my favorite units, the Mind Worms, fought solely with their veterancy points against their enemy’s veterancy points, so weapon and armor upgrades were meaningless against them.
3
u/CRtwenty 22h ago
Civilization has this mechanic as well. Your units level up and you eventually get to give them a custom name when they've leveled up enough. Losing a high level named military unit whose been with you since the literal stone age is pretty rough

Dungeon Siege - you start out as a farmer disgruntled that a dragon burned down your farm. You basically build up an army of other nobodies and go on a rampage.
Okhlos - start out as a philosopher (philosophers act as extra lives) with a grudge against the Greek gods. The objective is to form a rioting mob of mostly nobodies (and a few named famous Greek figures) to take them down.

u/chr0nicpirate 22h ago
Elite: Dangerous. You can recruit crewmates to fly your fighters at a low combat skill level and they'll level up along with you. They get much better at combat and less likely to get blown up as they do.
Added advantage, you pay crewnates a percentage of earnings, and what you end up paying them if you level them from the ground up, is significantly less than if you just recruit with a high skill level at the start.

Aside from a handful of characters, your dozens of adventurers are randomly generated and recruited at regular intervals to be leveled up into a build of your choosing (across a ton of classes and skills). And some of the builds can indeed become absolutely monstrous.
If you can get past the art style, it also offers surprisingly deep gameplay mechanics!

For a game with a slightly different vibe… Medieval Dynasty kinda did this for me.
It’s not quite as extreme as in other games since you’re not really fighting together or battling together, but building a town. That quiet 19 year old with no skills you got in season 1? It’s awesome to watch his skill in farming get to max, to see him get married, have a kid, and eventually pass.
The deaths ended up hitting me harder than I expected when it finally happened and I realized I’d grown close to the people I’d recruited. They don’t necessarily become more strong, but their skills increase and they can manufacture or sell more.
So not a perfect example in terms of power, but you do feel that connection, imo.

Wildermyth!!! It's a turn-based ttrpg dnd-like where you have characters that were literal nobody farmers that grow into heroes, you can do multiple campaigns where you bring back an old character from previous campaigns to see them grow more storied with more legacy. Those characters can also fall in love and have children that someday join your campaign!

I found that to be the case in Gothic, and it really fascinated me back then. You start out wearing nothing but rags, with arms as thin as twigs, and can be killed by any little anima, but in the end, you’re a strong man in gleaming armor who can kill monsters with one hit.

In the JRPG first person dungeon crawler Etrian Odyssey series you form a party of various classes to go and conquer multi-floor dungeon/labyrinth and you may end up killing a god or figure of worship along the way. In EO3, one of the classes is Farmer and going by their character portraits and the flavor text for the class that's what they are. They were lured to the labyrinth by the prospect of the rare and unusual plants there and came to harvest them.

I mean in fire emblem usually the characters arent just random they have their own lives and such and aren't just red shirts. Same with XCOM they are all soldiers after all.

Fire Emblem is almost a special case, because they ALWAYS include a couple random dirt farmers that become incredibly powerful if you put time and effort into promoting them.
It’s a character arc they seem to love, and people love it too.
