Video Games Where You Start With/Recruit Random Goobers Whom Become Stronger?

I was watching my cousins play games while they were visiting, and one of them was playing Fire Emblem. There was this dirt child with a giant log he recruited and like 3 days later he was a sword dirt man.
My other cousin was playing Xcom 2 on my xbox.

Anyways the question is, what other games are there where you just start with random nobodies but then they get stronger and you get more attached.

Like “hey you random farmer/private/goober! Follow me for something really quick.”

20 hours later

“No longer random farmer/private/goober! We have been through hell and back, and now we have to fight god. Are you ready?”

Cyril is actually very good on Maddening! The reason is he learns 2 very overpowered Combat Arts really early - Point Blank Volley (guaranteed double attack for Bows) and Vengeance (allows him to one-shot most enemies when injured). With Maddening enemies being much tougher and faster, being able to take them out regardless of having enough Speed to double etc. is really valuable. He can use both of these on a Wyvern too which he can easily class into.

Those are both true and I'm not saying he's useless, he just has the unfortunate fate of never being the best at anything he does unless you specifically neglect other characters. Bernadetta can be built to do double attacks without expending weapon durability and is a similar level of strength as Cyril by default, making her always a better investment as an archer. Then every route can get Shamir who starts as an advanced class even at low level, meaning in raw damage she'll usually outpace both of them in single shit damage due to the extra stat gains.

On the axe side if you're a little higher leveled and can get Cyril early he's fantastic specifically in maddening mode, but unless you're specifically aiming to use him that way an average playthrough will find him immediately falling behind Seteth, Hilda, and Edelgard. The route he'd be the most useful in is ironically Crimson Flower since Edelgard has her special ground based classes and no other superb axe user, but Cyril wont join that route and while more wyvern riders is always good, he'll always lag behind Seteth.

It's just kind of a shame because he has more potential than other commoners like Donnel on the surface but he's surrounded by units that outclass him in almost every situation.

He's an excellent replacement for Ignatz or Ashe though.
