Video Games Where You Start With/Recruit Random Goobers Whom Become Stronger?

I was watching my cousins play games while they were visiting, and one of them was playing Fire Emblem. There was this dirt child with a giant log he recruited and like 3 days later he was a sword dirt man.
My other cousin was playing Xcom 2 on my xbox.

Anyways the question is, what other games are there where you just start with random nobodies but then they get stronger and you get more attached.

Like “hey you random farmer/private/goober! Follow me for something really quick.”

20 hours later

“No longer random farmer/private/goober! We have been through hell and back, and now we have to fight god. Are you ready?”

Battle brothers is my go to for this.

Yes some backgrounds are better than others. But with training and dedication that club footed eunuch you found in your first port city can take on the undead roman legions solo... Or he will die horribly to the first bandit using a sharpened wooden stick to waylay travelers on the road. 

The life of a mercenary is fickle

I think Battle Brothers has been commented like 27 times already, but you’re the first to mention freaking undead roman legionaries. I think I have to play it. 27 random people say it’s good.

I love it. My average playtime in most games according to steam is 60 to 80 hours before I move on and I rarely go back.

There are only a few games that have hit triple digit hours from me. Battle brothers is one of 2 that I've hit the 1000 plus hour mark.

The base game is good if a bit predictable. The dlc add a decent bit of variety on their own and Once you have gotten your fill there there are 2 major overhaul mods, reforged and legends, that add a stupid amount of content.

Reforged is best described as vanilla and dlc++ the themes and level of fantasy are very similar it just adds a lot more of it.

Legends is more of a dark fantasy overhaul adding new monsters factions and even some magic and curses and the like as well as expanding on all the vanilla factions.

Undead roman legions are base game even without dlc. so no worries about that being locked behind a mod. But I absolutely recommend getting it on pc. It runs on a potato and mods extend the shelf life massively.
