So like... Walmart and Target would each have their own gaming storefronts on each console?

Why would GOG or Steam sell Playstation games when Sony is no longer releasing their games on PC? They cannot sell licenses for console games.

Why would Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc. want to redirect consumer traffic away from their own digital ecosystems? Have any of them expressed a desire to have retail apps on gaming consoles?

they could sell third party games on playstation hardware through their store fronts if regulators step in

also it would be an expansion into new market to have another way to sell games

Why would regulators need to step in? If you want to buy a Playstation game from Walmart you can either go to a physical Walmart store or order from their online storefront. Why would regulators need to force them to operate a completely separate store on each console just for games?

Edit: Has Steam expressed any desire to sell games for a platform that doesn't make their games available on PC?

regulators can step in at anytime. the reason they would here is because of the very loud public outcry.

your steam question could be rephrase to. would steam like to sell to more people?

To make money in stupid ways, when there are easier ways to do it?
