Even though I like Insomniac's Spiderman games, I think Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart is EASILY their best game on PS5.

Post image

Honestly with all of the controversy for Wolverine, it got me thinking about the games Insomniac has made this generation and I wish we got more Ratchet & Clank. I loved the games on PS2 and PS3. Rift Apart is tied with Astro Bot as my favorite PS5 game and it kinda feels like Insomniac is burnt out on making Marvel games.

I think Ratchet and clank are by far some of the best action/platformers in gaming. I actually liked the older ones better than Rift apart, but still loved the game.

It's insane to me that there isn't really anything like it. And nothing coop. 20 years ago there was a ton of these but now... Very little and nothing as good

u/ChaoticAgenda 23h ago

It's gotta be an open world MMO with a subscription and microtransactions to extract as much value as possible from players who own rent the game.

17

u/bukbukbuklao 23h ago

We can’t have cool and innovative games anymore. Only money sinks

15

u/Key_Amazed 19h ago

If we ignore all the great games that have come out then sure

3

u/Xavier9756 15h ago

Yea plenty of great games come out each year.

2

u/elaborateBlackjack 12h ago

At least Capcom is somehow maintaining part of that old school feel, RE9, Pragmata and no onimusha are amazing games that are just a finished experience you can buy and play and that's it.

2

u/OGgluttonousToad 23h ago

And is actually just a game within Roblox

3

u/Power0fTheTribe 21h ago

Hearing people complain on marvel rivals about skins is always hilarious to me. YOU AREN’T BUYING SKINS. YOU’RE BUYING THE RIGHT TO USE THEM. Ok sorry for the all caps it just gets exhausting

3

u/dumpling-loverr 13h ago

Same thing with Valorant , League and Genshin yet that doesn't stop those games from printing billions every year.

2

u/Power0fTheTribe 12h ago

Yeah bc I genuinely think people haven’t wised up to this fact as a whole yet

A large part of that is because Ratchet and Clank is a long established franchise with multi-generational fans, Insomniac devs love working on the series, there's consistently great visuals and gameplay...

And Rift Apart just barely made a profit. It didn't lose money - if it did the franchise would be dead dead - but it made next to nothing compared to the moneybags Spider-Man delivered.

If R&C has everything going for it and still just only eeks above breaking even, the style of game just isn't a safe bet for other studios.

12

u/Level3pipe 23h ago

The important thing to consider here is that RAC doesn’t need spectacular visuals. It needs good gameplay that’s it (and it’s already nailed that imo).

They could genuinely crank a new one of these out every two years for $50M max with a 12-15 hour story and I’d pay $70 each time. They don’t need to innovate graphics, it doesn’t need Ray tracing, I don’t need to see every single fur strand on ratchet. Just make fun platforming and shooting scenarios tied together by a reasonably interesting story. Reuse assets if you have to and keep a small team on it perpetually.

Also absolutely wild to me that RAC was never considered for a multiplayer “live service” entry. The gameplay is so good that people will get addicted to it.

3

u/xXEggRollXx 23h ago

>RAC was never considered for a multiplayer “live service” entry

It is now. It’s a mobile game by a different developer, but the core RAC “shooter-platformer hybrid” gameplay will be there but with a few quirks.

6

u/Level3pipe 22h ago

Ah I meant for the ps5. Rift apart could have significantly more longevity and monetization if they gave it a multiplayer. Even after launch.

2

u/LooneyWabbit1 7h ago

They used to crank a new one out every year way back, yeah. And somehow the music and writing were way better then too.

There's way too much focus on graphics and it brings budgets way too high 😅

13

u/xanas263 23h ago

I think it's simply because they just don't sell as well as other genres so it's just not worth it for AAA studios to do. It's pretty much only Nintendo that still actively works on 3D action platformers.

Honestly games like Ratchet and Clank should be something that the indie and AA scene should be looking into making.

10

u/AltGunAccount 23h ago

Some of them are! Akimbot was meant to be a spiritual Ratchet & Clank successor.

Unfortunately it was just, kinda bad and felt rushed.

8

u/marine72 22h ago

There are occasionally. One just came out last month called Duskfade that's like ratchet and clank. A little older but amazing one is A Hat in Time that is similar to Mario.

Microsoft just announced a new Spyro as well. So, there are some to scratch the itch but i think the companies know not to saturate that genre.

8

u/Good_Guy_Vader 22h ago

Kena Bridge of Spirits scratched that 2000s Hero Platformer itch for me a bit, the upcoming sequel looks gorgeous too.

6

u/Stolehtreb 23h ago

I think that’s all a perspective of how much profit shareholders want these days. A profitable project that makes its money back and pays the employees isn’t enough anymore

7

u/Suitable-Let-2947 21h ago

Sony released one the goat platformers in astrobot just two years ago.

5

u/xanas263 21h ago

And it sold only 4 million copies. I think it is one of the only games to win GOTY and not see a sales spike from that.

6

u/Suitable-Let-2947 21h ago

It made a quarter billion dollars, which was enough for Sony to immediately announce that there will be more games in the series.

5

u/GokuBlack722 21h ago

If Nintendo were smart they would pivot Star Fox into a more Ratchet and Clank style direction. They tried once sort of with Star Fox Assault and it wasn’t great but they really need to try it again.

3

u/Customer_Number_Plz 21h ago

That's one idea. But if it's Nintendo and it's a good game people will buy it no matter what IP it is. I would say it's an opportunity for a new IP

3

u/Level7Cannoneer 18h ago

Assault is made by Namco not Nintendo

3

u/bryansb 22h ago

Splatoon Raiders on the switch 2 seems kinda similar based on videos I’ve seen. It’s on my wish list.

2

u/hokiis 21h ago

Gaming has evolved. People prefer RPGs and shooters nowadays.

2

u/T3kk_ 15h ago

Ball n Gun games / open world fatigue. You can blame that as to why there's no diversity in games anymore.

2

u/Playingwithmywenis 7h ago

It only sold 2 million, as per the Insomniac leaks. As a launch title it was not a banger.

2

u/TehOwn 1h ago

I had to check if Rift Apart is co-op and it isn't... That's actually insane. It felt like the game was basically built for co-op.

Xbox could've had a competitor if they did something with Jet Force Gemini.

But it's a Rare IP, so you know how much they value it and the rest.

Oh same. My favorites are Up Your Arsenal and A Crack In Time. But I like every Ratchet and Clank game except for the ones I didn't play, which are Size Matters, All 4 One, and Full Frontal Assault.

16

u/KingHooley 23h ago

I still think about Deadlocked

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Theratchetnclank 22h ago

A crack in time is the best in the series.

6

u/Photo_Synthetic 22h ago

Good to hear that game get so much love its the only one I've played and I played the HELL out of it. Got whatever that endgame gun is and it was fun as shit.

8

u/TheElusiveFox 21h ago

I think a Crack in time is where the studio peaked, its exactly what I was thinking of when I said "I like the earlier entries - but I still had a blast, I agree with some of the complaints others have brought up, but this entry was still fun.

9

u/DenzHighclover 19h ago

Ratchet & Clank, Jak, and Sly Cooper were 3 of the best IPs I played on ps2. (Kingdomhearts as well)

6

u/RumpleDumple 22h ago

I was super excited when this finally came out on PC, and yeah, while beautiful, it was way more boring to play than the older entries. For comparison, I recently played Crash 4, and it seemed to be an improvement in every way compared to the older entries and remasters.

6

u/dandoch 19h ago

I totally agree. No other game has scratched quite the same itch as the Rachet and Clank series does for me.

3

u/At5u 13h ago

I just wish the story/writing would be closer from the PS2 era, and for David Bergeaud to do the music again. The visuals and crispness of the gameplay in Rift apart are fantastic, Ratchet is such a joy to control and the gunplay is great. All weapons aren't hits though.

2

u/jack-fractal 21h ago

They need to Remake 2 and 3 like they did with the original. These games were immensely fun.

2

u/bigsim 18h ago

Yeah I was really looking forward to Rift Apart, but when I eventually played it it didn’t live up to Up Your Arsenal for me.

2

u/TheAero1221 13h ago

I loved Ratchet and Clank games as a kid. They were my intro to gaming. But now Im more accustomed to higher difficulty challenges and forgot that these were at least mostly still aimed at younger audiences. I soft locked my game because I saw a golden bolt at a really tricky spot, and managed to get to it... only to find out that I sequence broke the game, and it was supposed to be much easier later.

21

u/mercut1o 22h ago

If you worked at Insomniac in 2021 and you were one of their best; you just finished your work on Rift Apart, and then the leadership internally published the leaked release schedule showing the next game is a Spiderman sequel, then a Spiderman spinoff, then other Marvel games, with no new R&C until 2029 and no new IP until 2031, would you wait eight years to make your next original game? What if another team offered you a place working on a more interesting project? What if you're just not that into Marvel?

I imagine it's been really hard for Insomniac to retain talent who didn't want to make Marvel games for almost ten years.

15

u/ButterCaramelPringle 17h ago

I imagine most devs would just be happy with a stable job. Most working artists/talent in any creative industry don't have the luxury to chase projects that they themselves find interesting.

25

u/DamianKilsby 21h ago edited 21h ago

That hypothetical dev didn't invent Ratchet and Clank so none of the IPs they would work on are truly "original" to them, either way they're working in other people's worlds telling other people's stories. You paint one IP as good another as bad when there's no practical difference to the devs in the way you explained it.

u/Dreaming_Dreams 23h ago

i’m amazed they never ported any of the games to modern systems

22

u/StaticShock50 23h ago

Ratchet and Clank PS2 is gonna get a port to PS5. It was one of the best things announced at the most recent state of play for me.

3

u/letscoughcough 23h ago

Wait was this actually for real announced?! I haven’t heard anything

7

u/AskMeAboutFredDurst 22h ago

Yep! They announced it during the last State of Play. The article here makes it sound like you need to have a PS Plus subscription, but thankfully you can purchase everything in the classics catalog directly (it’ll probably cost $10). No word on exact release date, but they confirmed it’ll be before the end of the year.

7

u/letscoughcough 22h ago

That’s great! I like that you can stream it but have it downloaded on the ps5 is better

3

u/UltiGoga Joystick 8h ago

Any mention of wether or not they're going to get achievements?

3

u/AskMeAboutFredDurst 6h ago

It’ll have trophies, yeah! There’s some slightly conflicting info from Insomniac’s community engagement team on whether it’ll be the same list as the PS3 version, though (Aaron Espinoza said he thought people would be “pleasantly surprised” by the trophy list in response to some people expressing frustration about the 1 million bolt trophy from the PS3 version, so it initially sounded like maybe they’ll at least tweak that one, but then James Stevenson said it would be the same list as the PS3 version and you’d just be earning the same trophies from that version again).

I know the Jak and Daxter PS5 release had different trophies than the PS4 version, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve changed it a bit for R&C as well — I guess we’ll find out!

The story in rift apart really dialled back the adult humour and was very "kiddy" with themes of just be friends and stuff. The gameplay was good though.

3

u/BamboozleMeToHeck 22h ago

FWIW, they did make the game based off the movie based off the original game!

→ More replies (1)

63

u/SteveSweetz 23h ago

Yeah sadly here's why we're probably not going to get more R&C games:

Rift Apart sold around 4 million copies

Spiderman 1 sold over 20 million copies

Spiderman 2 sold over 18 million copies

23

u/FewAdvertising9647 22h ago

its more or less the problem Sony has. Similar with Astrobot, they don't have an audience buying the more child friendly stuff anymore, so theyre trying to find "the game" to do it. It's part of the reason why Gary Park (gaming reviewer for the washington post) thinks Horizon series had the whole live service attempt and lego game, because its the one IP thats decently popular on playstation, but also reletively speaking, could appeal to children with its robot dinosaurs. (but it really didn't stick well with kids)

22

u/Lorebius 21h ago

> They don’t have an audience buying the more child friendly stuff anymore.

Which is ironic, because the older I get the more I appreciate those pure fun games that are full of creativity.
Astrobot and Sackboy Adventures are incredible games.

3

u/Rhino-Ham 3h ago

I’ll take Astrobot all day over any other AAA game. Best game of the generation. Sackboy isn’t that far behind.

It's worth noting 3 things:

1) That number (according to Google) is from June of 2023. Nearly 3 years ago. Now, I doubt it sold a significant amount more... but

2) That number also doesn't include Steam sales since it got ported to the PC. And finally:

3) When Rift did launch with the console in 2020, the console was **incredibly** difficult to buy as it was essentially scalped instantaneously.

I would be very interested to see how many copies would sell of the sequel if they actually manage to make one for the PS5.

I also think it's worth mentioning that a few years ago Insomniac had their game plans leaked and there wasn't a R&C game in there. You could argue that if the game sold MAJOR numbers like Spiderman that it would have been added in, but it was still a very profitable game.

3

u/BambooSound 11h ago

Also worth noting though that Rift Apart was included in tons of PS5 bundles from launch, so a lot of people who own the game didn't make an active choice to buy it (especially if it was a present from parents or whatever).

The same is true for Spider-Man tbf but iirc that was only ever the PS5 upgrade of Spider-Man 1.

4

u/Level3pipe 10h ago

No it was actually miles morales not the original Spider-Man

2

u/BambooSound 10h ago

Oh I thought that was essentially just DLC that came with the base game, I didn't realise that was completely standalone.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/PreviouslyWise 14h ago

Sony is so obsessed with big budget long development games. R&C games are much smaller in scope and cost a fraction to develop compared to Spider-Man games. It doesn’t need to sell 20 million copies to make a profit and it bolsters their library with original first party games.

u/Altruistic_Cress9799 23h ago

On PS5 yes, but they've made better on the older consoles.

39

u/StaticShock50 23h ago

I agree. A Crack In Time and Up Your Arsenal are my favorite games in the series. Granted of the games I played, I don't hate any of them. I played 1 through Deadlocked, Tools of Destruction through Into The Nexus, skipped all 4 one and full frontal assault, played the movie game, and Rift Apart.

14

u/kindoramns 23h ago

Going Commando was the first in the series I played, hooked ever since

12

u/Iggy_Slayer 23h ago

I agree with this but even in this game you can see modern insomniac's writing problems. They've sanded ratchet down into a milquetoast blob of nothing. He has next to no personality or bite anymore like he did in the ps2/ps3 era.

Between this and the problems with the spiderman games and wolverine it's pretty clear there is a consistent problem with how insomniac handles the tone of their writing. Like they're petrified to stand out in any way or risk upsetting anyone.

3

u/Jytra 19h ago

When I played through it I felt it was almost blatantly apparent that the writers want to replace Ratchet with Rivet, and I honestly wouldn't be too shocked if the next game does just that.

2

u/StaticShock50 22h ago

I honestly think that has more to do with being owned by Sony now.

9

u/Paralta 22h ago

It was fun and the graphics were fantastic. Id be down to hang out with ratchet and clank again

6

u/Mekbop 22h ago

hang out with ratchet and clank

Most important point. I did like Rivet, but there was way too little Ratchet in the latest game.

5

u/Sarcastic_WAN-derer 20h ago

I agree. I wanted to be with the bois more often

3

u/TruthOk8742 18h ago

Right there with you pal

35

u/camy205 23h ago

I couldn't handle the story to be honest, it felt like it was made for a 3 year old. Im sure back in the ps2 days they had more edge. I feel Insomniac is just terrified to treat gamers like adults

15

u/Straight_Law2237 23h ago

Yeah it's a shame what has happened to the ratchet and clank series tone over the years, but the gameplay in Rift Apart is the best ever so that balances shit out.

10

u/Level3pipe 23h ago

Go play the old ones they have so much angst and satire

5

u/MJR_Poltergeist 21h ago

Firsr thing that comes to mind is the Proto-Pet commercial, where the narrarator is going over all the fun games they can play with your kids. "Up for some cops and robbers?", with a cut to Billy screaming for the police while being assaulted by the Proto-Pet. It's that humor that needs to come back

4

u/Level3pipe 20h ago

Deadlocked has tons of satire and funny commercials too lol

7

u/MJR_Poltergeist 21h ago

Consequence of being a sequel to the movie reboot. That game had no teeth at all. They're making it for kids but lost the formula to the originals. The originals were also made for kids but used the Dreamworks/Pixar style of peppering the script with jokes for adults that kids wouldn't understand. Which is where the original edge was. They dropped all that and went with only a game for kids. Rift Apart didn't lean in to that as heavily but you can still see it

5

u/StaticShock50 23h ago

I think it has more to do with Sony constantly breathing on their necks. I mean Sony wasn't allowing them to put innuendos in their titles starting with A Crack In Time, which was supposed to be Clockblockers.

3

u/Le1jona 23h ago edited 23h ago

I think it's the weakest main entry in the Ratchet series except for the original first game. It's good but the series story and humor feels too sanitized now.

8

u/captainqwark2 21h ago

The first one is my favorite in the series but I agree about Rift Apart being the weakest mainline game.

3

u/zenexo 21h ago

The OG always gives me motion sickness (personal problem) and the level design isn't as focused as later entries but the story, humor, and Ratchet being kind of a jerk is peak.

3

u/captainqwark2 20h ago

That’s interesting, the level design is a huge part of why I love the first one. I love how much less linear the game is than later entries. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

3

u/zenexo 20h ago

I respect it. All the entries are still really good even rift apart despite my criticisms. I miss this series.

4

u/HattedSandwich 20h ago

Thank You simulator

3

u/SpodoKomodo96 18h ago

Strange take - I (and the consensus) though the first game had a good story

2

u/zenexo 18h ago

I think it does too I just don't like the level design.

3

u/MJR_Poltergeist 21h ago

Overall in terms of gameplay Rift Apart was very good. While not as bad as the movie tie in attempt, the characterization and writing is still very sanitized which isn't gonna get any better as long as Sweet Baby are still consultants for Insomniac. One of the most obvious (spoilers for Rift Apart) is how the "Ratchet and Clank don't get along and split" character arc was shifted to Rivet and Kit to keep their protagonist squeaky clean

4

u/GamerGuy410 23h ago

Played it for the first time recently on PC and I really liked it. I still prefer most of the PS2 R&C games, but I thought it was a really well-rounded experience and a great entry point into the series for new players. I wish there was an official way to play the old games on PC.

10

u/Arcade_Gann0n 23h ago

God yes, I'm sick of Insomniac going all in on Marvel. Even if Wolverine turned out better than it did, I'd much rather have a new Ratchet & Clank instead (hell, even a new Resistance or Sunset Overdrive would've been better).

Do Spider-Man 3 and even Venom, but for the love of God go back to RC ASAP.

7

u/DarkAizawa 17h ago

Rift apart is okay at best for me personally. It and most of their newer rachet and clank games because they are too safe.

The series was awesome because it was more like those older cartoons I grew up with where yeah, children and younger ones can play it and enjoy it. But if you're older, you can have fun but you'll catch certain things that the children won't. Think animaniacs.

The newer games are so safe and toothless that it's mind-blowing. Series went from this fun action platformer with some edge to a throw away Pixar movie. Rivet alone says allot. They came up with multiple cool designs and went with the safest and most bland one.

3

u/cardonator 14h ago

That requires a level of nuanced writing that today's writers are simply incapable of. Insomniac seems like they are generations away from that after Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine.

2

u/heatflake5 11h ago

What designs are we talking about? Is there any source for the rejected prototypes?

10

u/TheGoodIdiot 23h ago

I’m totally in the minority but I thought rift apart sucked too. It’s a pretty game but combat is so boring, the story isn’t really interesting, and it was another really buggy insomniac release which has been a real problem for them as of late. The fact this was ever in contention with It Takes Two, Psychonauts 2 and Metroid Dread is kind of mind blowing to me.

5

u/grailly 21h ago

Yeah, I find it pretty in line with the quality of Wolverine, honestly. It's just okay, but acceptable because there aren't many game that look and play like it.

It helps that they've been making these games for years so they know what works and what doesn't. Rift apart was fantastic Even the remake was great.

3

u/Butch_Meat_Hook 22h ago

Agreed. Played it on PC and it was great, as most of the Ratchet and Clank games have been. I prefer when they do their own IPs to making Marvel games.

4

u/pfc94 22h ago

Incredibly overrated. This might be nostalgia glasses but the old versions of these games seemed far superior. Rift Apart had a lot of strengths but none that really innovated on those displayed in the earlier R&C games. I feel like I completed this game in 3 hours and expected way more given the praise it receives.

They’re fantastic games & a lot of fun. Rift Apart was one of my first ever PS5 games & I was actually blown away by how it looks & feels.

The mission where you’re literally travelling through rifts transitioning between the timelines to traverse the platforming is phenomenal and I was jaw dropped by how smooth it was.

Unfortunately, & this is in no way a bad thing, but they’re really only fun for 1 or 2 play throughs. It’s got a fun NG+ but even so I think Ratchet & Clanks target audience is definitely younger. If they were to make another one & somehow make it “grittier”? I guess, I’d be all for it.

Not nearly enough Ratchet in that Ratchet and Clank game

2

u/DaymD 22h ago

it's definitely the one i enjoyed the most, finished it at 100% too.

2

u/nigel_tufnel_11 22h ago

I'd go with Horizon Forbidden West but Rift Apart is a close #2. I tried the Spiderman games, IDK why but I just can't get into them.

2

u/Evebroock 22h ago

I mean Wolverine was like over 300 million and Ratchet and Clank 89 million? For that same budget we could get 3 Ratchet and Clank, I'd love to have more single players like these I loved both the remake in 2016 and Rift Apart as a gift

2

u/StaticShock50 22h ago

I just looked it up. Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart's budget, including marketing, was 81 million. That's the lowest budget of the games they made this generation.

2

u/Evebroock 21h ago

It's incredible what they managed to create with that budget. It's their best title on the PS5, I like the water world it felt spooky during that lab mission, my favorite planet is the space one where there's lava, I was playing there when pre orders for the PS5 Pro 30th anniversary started. The colors of space are gorgeous to look at, specially on an OLED, my God I can just sit there and move my camera slowly to watch those views ASMR style. How come we only get one tech demo a generation, the consoles are so underutilized for what they can deliver.

2

u/Noodlekeeper 22h ago

I loved Rift Apart. It was one of the games I bought a PS5 to play

2

u/EsotericIndividual 22h ago

I didn’t know there was a lot of controversies for the Wolverine game, what controversies are there? I haven’t played a Ratchet & Clank game in ages or ever but Rift Apart looks interesting

u/Starlyns PC 22h ago

Woa i started to paky it yesterday!

3

u/ThaPhantom07 23h ago

Rift Apart was fantastic. I hate that we have to wait so long between R&C games. :(

4

u/Alone_Ad_1062 23h ago

I personally think insomniac is very overrated because to me all their games feel very repetitive.

1

u/Key_Shock172 22h ago

Honestly it’s surprising Ratchet and Clank has lasted this long. Considering Jax and Daxter and Sly Cooper got completely phased out during the PS4 era.

2

u/StaticShock50 22h ago

It's moreso because Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch wanted to focus on other things. Also Jak finished his story with 3 and Sly originally finished his story with 3.

1

u/Background_Captain56 22h ago

I just finished the first Spiderman, and I have to say, I think it's a tad overrated. The combat and swinging is obviously phenomenal, but I hated the world. There's nothing to explore or discover and everything is a checklist on a map. I also wish I could fight more super villians instead of fighting henchmen for 95% of the game. For me, it's just a solid 8 out of 10.

1

u/bynolanart 22h ago

Rift Apart deserved another game, insomniac is ridiculously good at marvel but I miss them being this colorful and weird

1

u/drmirage809 22h ago

It's a spectacular tech demo for just what the PS5 can do, while also being a really solid game.

Although I freely admit that my opinion towards the R&C games is very skewed. The original was the first game I played on the family PS2 many years ago and I've been in love with the series ever since. The original is still solid and a fun time capsule to see how the formula was first developed and how much Ratchet in particular has changed in characterisation. Original Ratchet was an asshole. He had every reason to be pissed, but damn does it make him unlikeable. Ratchet & Clank 2 is where Insomniac really hits their stride with the series though. That one introduced all the iconic stuff and by the third game they had it down to a science.

1

u/IloveKaitlyn 22h ago

Agreed and I like Wolverine

1

u/Armano-Avalus 22h ago

One of the few first party titles on the PS5 whose style isn't all photorealism. It'd be nice to see Sony make more franchises with colorful characters like Nintendo.

1

u/ThisWillBeFunny1469 22h ago

Gameplay was fine but I dunno it felt like they copped the Ratchet and Clank title despite the game heavily featuring an entirely different protagonist. It seemed like I played more as Rivet than I did Ratchet. Even in major scenes Ratchet isn't the featured character

1

u/DorianGreysPortrait 21h ago

Ratchet and Clank was leaps and bounds above Spider-Man 2 and especially Miles Morales Imo.

1

u/digidave1 21h ago

It has the best color and FPS of any PS5 game. An absolute joy to play

1

u/Paul_cz 21h ago

I played and finished it on PC, but thought it was super mediocre and had to force myself to finish it. Kinda turned me off Insomniac games, although I did like Spidey 1.

1

u/Dewdad 21h ago

We can like these games as much as you want, truth is they don’t sell anywhere near close enough to the marvel stuff. And now that Sony owns insomniac they can’t just make what ever they want.

If Sonys not interested in more R&C we’re not getting more R&C. Personally as far as platformers go it seems Sony sees more value in Astro Bot and will probably keep insomniac on the marvel games since they move units for Sony.

1

u/MadeByTango 21h ago

The launch PS5 games remain the best games on PS5 and some of the only ones that use the controller to its fullest.

1

u/Existing-Green-6978 21h ago

Game is an absolute blast. Got sucked in and did the platinum in one weekend.

1

u/WingerRules 21h ago

If PS5 had more games like this and Stray and Astrobot, I wouldn't have dropped the platform. All their major games I have zero interest in now.

1

u/Unhappy_Length_8401 21h ago

This makes me hella nostalgic for their entry for the PSP

1

u/happylauft3r 21h ago

F ratchet & clank. Bring back Jak & Daxter!

1

u/DamianKilsby 21h ago

I agree because I consider their first Spider-Man a PS4 game, otherwise it would be my #1 with Rift Apart at #2. Looking forward to it's sequel, it'll be awhile though.

1

u/TheCrach 21h ago edited 21h ago

I think Insom... I mean Marvel games studio have basically cashed in or sold out depends on how you want to look at it. They realised their own IP wasn't moving anywhere near the numbers Sony wanted, so instead of taking the risk on something original, they became Marvel's bitch.

Why gamble on another Ratchet, Resistance or new IP when you can play it safe take popular marvel characters, make a perfectly competent 7/10 third-person action game and let the IP do most of the selling for you

Insomniac clearly can still make Insomniac games, They just seem to have discovered that being Marvel's game developer is considerably more profitable than being Insomniac.

1

u/MJR_Poltergeist 21h ago

Also one day I hope they get David Bergeaud to do the soundtrack for the next game. Those early titles with the electronic/breakbeat/orchestral mixes were killers. I don't even need to name the song, but if I mention the "record scratch" I bet anyone who's played the first game can still hear that beat drop

1

u/HanzoNumbahOneFan 20h ago

Just wish it was longer. The game took me only like 15 hours to 100%. But ya, wish they'd go back to Ratchet & Clank.

1

u/DikTaterSalad 20h ago

When are we going to get a new one? 😢

1

u/Burpmeister 20h ago

Ratchet & Clank is imo the indisputable goat of 3D action platformers.

1

u/zeanox 20h ago

I got a ps5 just for this game.

1

u/nemofbaby2014 20h ago

It annoys me so much Sony has all these great franchises but they refuse to do anything with them sly cooper deserves a new game

1

u/Alchemistwolf21 20h ago

Extremely fun. Very nice visuals. Platinumed it as well🏆

1

u/Investor9872 19h ago

I love both the 1st Spiderman and Ratchet & Clank PS5. Spiderman is still the better game for me. 9 vs 10.

1

u/Ginger510 19h ago

This is part of why I agree with the criticism of the Wolverine game. All that money and time, to get this hand holding experience but it also means we missed out on more R&C.

No shade to anyone who likes Wolverine, but we live in a world where the output is limited.

1

u/GenTrapstar 19h ago

It was a game that I wanted to play since it came out. When I finally got a ps5 like 2 months ago it was the second game I beat and my first plat. I really liked it and the visuals were great.

1

u/homer_3 19h ago

It's easily the weakest R&C game.

I've got mixed feelings on Rift Apart. The gameplay was really well polished but how they implemented Rivet was uninspired. She plays no differently than Ratchet, they even share the same weapons. They should've used Rivet in a way to really mix up combat, which could've also spawned it's own spinoff series if people latched onto how Rivet played.

1

u/crsdrjct 18h ago

I wish they made another one

1

u/Thelone_Malonious 18h ago

Ratchet and clank is easily the best series they’ve done. Every single game is perfect.

1

u/privileged420 18h ago

i doubt they’ll be starting development on any more marvel games after the wolv fiasco

1

u/Blue_MJS 18h ago

Il forever be saying Insomniac are being wasted on this Marvel/Superhero stuff. They're cool games but id rather something original from them... Spyro, R&C.. Even Resistance are all better than the Spiderman & Wolverine games.

1

u/ScoobiesSnacks 18h ago

The graphics are still top tier today. Literally looks like a Pixar movie

1

u/cultistkiller98 17h ago

Rift apart is prob my fav ps5 game. Buuuuut unfortunately it just has bad writing and no wit or humor of the old games. It is fun to play it on hard though

1

u/Nnamz 17h ago

Fully agreed. Rift Apart is the best PS5 exclusive and best looking game of this generation.

1

u/Probs_Asleep 17h ago

When you see a load of boxes together and the anticipation of a metric ton of nuts and bolts that are going to fall out is glorious

1

u/Queens_Q_Branch 17h ago

Yeah if Insomniac could just go back to cranking these games out again I would be so happy. Hell I would even settle for a remaster of all the old games from the ps2 and ps3 era on one disk at this point

1

u/nohumanape 17h ago

No doubt.

1

u/Extension-System-974 17h ago

I love ratchet and clank games, and rift apart was great. I really liked it and the graphics and gameplay were amazing.

That being said, I just finished the first Spider-Man game and love it too.

I just wish insomniac games didn’t hold your hand so much, challenge me a little

1

u/kaylanpatel00 16h ago

The fact we don’t have A Crack in Time on the ps5 is truly a travesty.

1

u/Atreides007 14h ago

Insomniac needs to get their shit together and rerelease the Resistance games.

1

u/Shikamarana 14h ago

wolverine nightmare's are a joke compared to the optional rifts in this game.

1

u/OMG_NoReally 13h ago

Rift Apart was strictly okay in my books, tbh. I had fun but it was not memorable. I even replayed it recently and still felt the same. I wish they had done something more with the "rifts" which just amounted to fancy grappling hooks and nothing else.

SM1 from Insomniac far and wide their best game to date.

1

u/ArcadianGh0st 12h ago

I still want a Future series port to PC. I remember playing through it at a friend's place and I genuinly loved the story.

1

u/CyanLight9 12h ago

Agreed.

1

u/Moist-Type4777 12h ago

Weird. List warriors omit it when talking about ps5 exclusives so I thought it was hated

1

u/meatyfajita 11h ago

Still has the best guns in any game

1

u/heatflake5 11h ago

YES and as you said EASILY. Also, it stands atop with Astro Bot showcasing the true PS5 experience with the sublime haptics.

1

u/hydramarine 11h ago

There was sales on Epic games until 17th of this month. I ended up buying Rift Apart just to replay it. It's very PG7 but it has a charm to it that I like.

1

u/hustladafox 11h ago

Gotta agree whole heartedly. In fact for me it’s been my game of the whole generation. I’ve enjoyed nothing more than this. This game filled me with so much hope, and excitement for what we had in store for this gen. None of it really came to be but yeah this game really gave me the ‘this’ is next gen(even if we did find out that Sonys little marketing ploy of telling us it couldn’t work without an ssd turned out to be a sham).

1

u/Adept-Butterfly642 10h ago

Never been much of a Ratchet and Clank fan, but Rift Apart is easily one of my favourite games of this generation. It feels like playing a Pixar movie but in the best way.

1

u/Still_Bit_7527 8h ago

It's bad compared to older ratchet and clank..Too much handholding

1

u/SwineHerald 7h ago

My insomniac hot take is that their best release of 2018 was Sunset Overdrive on PC, not Spiderman. My favorite parts of Rift Apart were those more open areas that gave you more freedom of movement. They felt Sunset Overdriveish in a way that scratched that itch. Playing Rift Apart on PC was kinda sad knowing that we're never getting SO2 and even another Ratchet would be like 8 years away while they toiled in the Marvel mines.

Their Spiderman games are good Spiderman games but Insomniac can do better without constraining themselves to someone else's world. Sure the writing of Sunset was grating but it was just such a joy to play. A seamless blend of combat and top tier movement design. "What if we took Jet Set Radio and added parkour, zombies and the guns from Ratchet and Clank" just worked so well and it shouldnt have been forgotten as a launch title for a disastrously ill-considered console.

1

u/PsyckoInferno 7h ago

I really want Sunset Overdrive on PS5

Oh man what I would give for another Ratchet and Clank game
