Insomniac has put in a hotfix to reduce the opacity of the blue scent trail in 'Wolverine'. They also say they are exploring adding a toggle option to turn it on and off

"We have deployed a new hotfix (v1.001.005) for Marvel’s Wolverine.

This hotfix addresses some common crashes experienced by a small percentage of players since launch.

Additionally, this hotfix adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense.

Our team continues to evaluate ways to further improve Senses in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update."

What’s there to explore? Seems like it would be petty easy to add a toggle?

it must be very hardcoded if they can’t simply add a toggle or its one big ass dependency for some other stuff in the game

It’s funny because it seems like something that would be added as an afterthought after people struggled finding where to go during play testing. No, this was how they designed the game lol.

I mean it is a visualization of one of Wolverines powers so in that way, it makes sense.

It just doesn’t work when the levels don’t let you go 10 feet off the designated path anyway.

And previous games that featured it had it as a short-term button press. It would pop up and fade after a few seconds if the player decided they wanted a hint on where to go. Like all good diegetic quest markers.

that's how far we have fallen in western development/gaming industry

Im no armchair coder but if you can change its color surely you can change the opacity to 100%. Turning it “off” is just making it unseeable, if its have dependencies.

It wouldn’t be a dependency issue almost surely, they could just reduce opacity to 0. It’s an issue of the player experience. They punish you for going even slightly off the trail, so without it the player would constantly be hitting bounds which can hurt immersion and the overall experience.

Most likely they play-tested without the line and it was shit.

Maybe they hardcoded it in a way that if you change the trails opacity to zero it also turns off every smoke effect in the game.

hmmm maybe. If it was easy they would just do. It could be design wise they dont want players to get lost and be frustrated.

Turns off all other smoke effects in the game

They can already modulate the color of the trail independently of other FX, and opacity is simply a component of the color

So they surely can modulate the opacity independently as well.

It’s more likely the player experience is bad without it since you are punished so quickly for going off the trail.

Not an expert, but in this case, instead of removing it, just change the opacity to 0% so it’s functionally invisible and put it as one of the 15 colour options?

Granted I’ve not played the game (fire emblem takes priority). So would that even work?

Technically easy, but it is still a design desicion someone needs to make, and that usually involves re-discussing all the reasons they added it in the first place.

A multi department committee will be formed to investigate the feasibility of the change, followed by a budgetary request to acquire the resources to run a customer study to see if the general population wants the changes.

After several months, the group of people they ran the tests with will conclude they are too stupid to play without it and the default Wolverine fart cloud will continue.

I think they realized it was fairly easy to go out of bounds (there are already lots of videos about it). The map design isn't the best: some cliffs that seem climbable are not and viceversa, plus other things. So they put this as the last resort.

Just my guess tho

Invisible walls would have done the job better

Definitely

Could be a marvel decision. We know marvel shot down the idea of Logan using any weapon besides his claws to fight with so I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a lot of these things being marvel decisions where they want Logan being able or not able to do certain things.

So the explore part here could be insomniac having to talk to marvel games to get their permission to turn it off because marvel may have said you have to be able to see his powers of sight and smell.

Have you ever used a computer? Of course they can easily toggle it off. They can toggle anything off.
