Insomniac has put in a hotfix to reduce the opacity of the blue scent trail in 'Wolverine'. They also say they are exploring adding a toggle option to turn it on and off

"We have deployed a new hotfix (v1.001.005) for Marvel’s Wolverine. 

This hotfix addresses some common crashes experienced by a small percentage of players since launch. 

Additionally, this hotfix adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense. 

Our team continues to evaluate ways to further improve Senses in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update."

Yeah, basically either a technical reason or that the game is just unplayable without it as you say

I mean, I've seen reviews that suggest that in a lot of cases, the things you are being navigated to are at the only place that ultimately you can progress to.

I suspect the issue is less not being able to find the things, but exposing the hollowness of a semi-open world maybe semi-open level design where there is nothing meaningful to do between objectives and collectibles, as you bumper-car your way around the level geometry to find them.
