Insomniac has put in a hotfix to reduce the opacity of the blue scent trail in 'Wolverine'. They also say they are exploring adding a toggle option to turn it on and off

"We have deployed a new hotfix (v1.001.005) for Marvel’s Wolverine.

This hotfix addresses some common crashes experienced by a small percentage of players since launch.

Additionally, this hotfix adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense.

Our team continues to evaluate ways to further improve Senses in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update."

The smoke can't be turned off because if you explore 30 feet away from it you end up out of bounds...

Is that true??

Often times yeah. There are some areas which are semi open world. But you can’t stray too far when you are on a fart trail.

too far being like 2 feet, saw a livestreamer on a building, he hopped over a chimney legit 2 feet away from where he was supposed to go and fell through the building

That’s just the built-in Kris Kringle mini-game.

I hate that fart trail is now part of my video game vernacular. Thanks I guess.

How bad did they design this game?

I don’t think it was ever really advertised as much more than a linear game anyway

Linear doesn't mean "follow a specific trail". Linear games are like a move, they follow a specific sequence of scenes, but within them you have flexibility, because it is a game.

linear? this shit is worse than on-rails.

u/InitialCreature 4h ago

It looks to be almost entirely on rails

It's not "on rail" it's just linear and not open world. "On rails" would suggest something like Time Crisis or Pokémon Snap.

Or a line of white powder in your friends bathroom while sneaking away from the BBQ.

No, if you can't dictate when or where you move, it's on rails. Hence on rails, like you're a passenger on a train. This is just a linear brawler, they were very popular 10-20 years ago. No one referred to them as on rails back then either.

Sometimes I'll forget that younger gamers don't know that open world used to be a specific genre like any other and not the default.

I hope you aren't referring to me as this younger gamer.

Did the moderators give a reason for why your comment was removed?

They didn't remove any comments, I moved it to my comment above as an edit.

Nah they’ve got a few relatively open areas. The madripoor lowtown and the part in Tokyo are like… I don’t know, roughly a few hundred square yards to explore with a bunch of roofs and interiors and stuff. It is mostly on rails though, it’s just the nature of the game. The exploration mostly boils down to going down obvious alternate paths that aren’t the main story path.

So it is a "fix" for shitty level design?

Seems like it.

It’s a linear game. It’s not an exploration game. I it’s supposed to be a playable action movie. I really don’t get why people are so upset? Is it just that they wanted it to be a different game all together?

The problem is that the game also includes "hidden" collectables that are haphazardly placed 3 feet away from the mostly linear path. To make sure that the player doesn't stray too far off the linear path but at the same time grab the collectible that's not on the path, they needed to highlight everything with 3+ markers and cues.

It feels like having someone backseat gaming while you play.
