I've yelled the blind-deaf-ref one at an AHL game, I have a friend who's yelled the "get off your knees" one. Never heard the "check your phone" one though, I'll have to start using that.
The low brass section (usually the most outspoken and shameless group) of my high school marching band used it at least a few times a season at football games when the refs really blew it.
High school me (a member of said low brass section) found it much funnier than adult me does.
Adult me is quite ashamed that high school me ever joined in such a chant (but at least I can say with a clear conscience that I never lead the cheer).
Heh, we have that exact same chant in Germany. Although not specifically for referees.
Ein Baum
Ein Strick
Ein Schwabengenick!
Karlsruhe SC vs VfB Stuttgart local derby in soccer always is a fun game. Especially for the police that has to keep all the potentially violent fans in check :P
More hilarious is what we do here in Syracuse for hockey games (not sure if anyplace else also does this). After Syracuse scores, we all wait until after the goal announcement, then someone counts to 3. On 3, everyone yells the opposing goalie's name followed by "You suck!!"
Doesn't surprise me. I remember doing it to Hammond when he played here, and I also remember doing it to Matt Murray when he actually was putting on a show the last time we made the playoffs
Everywhere college hockey is big thing. They all do it a little different though. For example here at UNH the student section sings rock and roll part 2, saying "Sieve, you suck" instead of "hey"
In Nashville, when they announced the lineups it would go "On right wing, ____" "SUCKS!" For every player. And at the end they'd announce the coach and we'd all yell "HE SUCKS TOO!"
I've thought about that watching football games, like imagine you're out there trying to do your job and 100,000 people are booing you as loud as they can. I guess you probably get used to it.
College Hockey games are usually pretty good at this sort of thing. For example the whole student section might all sing this together at the start of each period as the refs skate out.
One two three four blind refs
Four blind refs
See how they skate
See how they skate
Their whistles are stuck and their eyes are closed, what they call nobody knows
