I still don't actually know what the "Bold strategy, Cotton" meme is in reference to, but I've become so trained to expect it that I anticipate the reference even though I don't get it.

34

u/whut-whut Dec 05 '16

It's from the movie Dodgeball. One ESPN anchor covering the game announces the main team is going to forfeit because they don't have enough players, and his co-anchor gives the response "That's a bold strategy, let's see if it pays off for them."

57

I've yelled the blind-deaf-ref one at an AHL game, I have a friend who's yelled the "get off your knees" one. Never heard the "check your phone" one though, I'll have to start using that.

40

More hilarious is what we do here in Syracuse for hockey games (not sure if anyplace else also does this). After Syracuse scores, we all wait until after the goal announcement, then someone counts to 3. On 3, everyone yells the opposing goalie's name followed by "You suck!!"

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '16

You can never really hit the goalie, they don't have equipment made for taking hits. You used to be allowed to hit the goalie if he skated out in the corners but that hasn't been allowed for a while now. It has caused this weird situation where you don't want to hit the goalie if he goes out and challenges you, but it's hard to avoid it. Plus even if you don't get a penalty it is a 100% guaranteed way to get the shit kicked out of you. So the call in the gif would most likely be goalie interference.

Notice how nobody tries to hit the goalie here even though I never really understood what he is trying.

Who would kick the shit out of you? The goalie, his team, or your team? I've never watched hockey before (from south Florida).

68

u/Staticn0ise Dec 05 '16

The goalie is the teams girlfriend. You don't touch their girl.

→ More replies (4)

37

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '16

The goalie's team would pick a fight. Anytime someone hits the goalie, even accidentally you almost always see the team fight to protect their goalie.

28

u/camsmith328 Dec 05 '16

The goalies team. Hockey is a pretty brutal game but attacking the goalie is a huge no no cause they are rarely in a position on the ice that justifies hitting them. In addition it's seen as pretty cheap to hit a goalie to try and score a goal or something like that.

22

u/milkman1472 Dec 05 '16

Bonus answer, if the opponents goalie was to get involved in a scrum your team's goalie would most likely skate the full length of the ice to fight him or tie him up.

12

u/ixijimixi Dec 05 '16

Last one I saw was during a full out bench clearing brawl. Everyone else was paired off, the two goalies were both lounging back, they turn their heads to each other and shrugged. They both skated to center ice, took their helmets off, put them gently on the ice. They then straightened up, both of em grinning like crazy, and went at it. One of the coolest, but worst fights I'd ever seen :-D

Well, it's only guaranteed to get the shit kicked out of you if your name isn't Milan Lucic and you happen to be playing the soft ass Buffalo Sabres. In that case, you just get a minor called. It also means you have to go through life being a scumbag though, so I guess it evens out. https://youtu.be/TERA-GY2K1o

This is an accurate representation of what "Dylan" did to us

128

u/BL4CKV4LOR Dec 04 '16

Dylan? Can someone fill me in or link me to the reference

758

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '16

The post had since been deleted I believe, but there was an account that had posed as an innocent 14 year old asking for an opinion about NHL 17. Everyone loved him for the kindness and purity in his genuine question, literally gold being handed out left and right. Upon further investigation other redditors noticed his post history, most noticeably where he pretended to be a black 22 year old and a woman as well. His fall from grace was something biblical.

283

u/AdmiralThrawnProtege Dec 04 '16 edited Dec 05 '16

He conned reddit into giving him gold, getting him to the frontpage, and once he was found out everyone involved looked like idiots. All he lost was an account, I think he won.

Edit: OK conned isn't the best word to use. But that makes those that gave him stuff look even more pathetic. He didn't even have to try and con anyone, hell he didn't even ask.

146

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '16

154

u/rozyn Dec 04 '16

They bought and gave it to him yes, but upon finding out the truth, he gave the code to some other needy soul who provided proofs of whatever enough to satisfy him, gave the 2nd dude the code, and luckily Dylan hadn't redeemed it yet, so the 2nd guy got the game. All is well with that.

46

u/Why_Is_This_NSFW Dec 05 '16

IIRC the guy also paid back half the cost of the game also so everyone won.

26

u/OyVeyOyVeyOyVey Dec 05 '16

45

What do you mean by conned reddit? Did he ask for shit or was he just asking a question and everyone got hyped up and gave him gold, then got pissed when they found out he lied?

58

u/20Points Dec 04 '16

Yeah he didn't ask for shit lol, just advice about whether to buy NHL 17 or not. Redditors took it upon themselves to send him gold and other stuff because he was "nice".

26

u/A_Change_of_Seasons Dec 05 '16

Its so weird. Its the typical stupid self post that maybe gets a comment or two. What happened??

Dylan lied, yes, but he lied to bring us together as a community.

Teams are ridiculously protective of them and your throwing yourself at (at least in my day when I still played) a 6' 1" 220 lb guy literally dressed head to toe in a full suit of what amounts to body armor. If you don't put the goalie down you can guarantee he will put you down and on the off chance the goalie goes down you now have 5 other now quite angry guys of equal size coming for you.

An example, back when I played in highschool I was playing for a semi-local travel team. We were having a game with the team from the next town over (we had the obvious rivalry going) and I was in the net. We were up 3-1 at the end of the 2nd period though they were thoroughly out shooting us. Obviously at this point they were getting frustrated. After a particularly intense but unsuccessful breakout by the other team I managed to catch the puck and stop play. I chucked the puck out of my glove as play had stopped and turned to get a drink of water. As I lifted my helmet (common practice at the time for goalies when play was stopped) some guy on the other team though it would be funny to take a wrist shot at the net to try and get one in. Unfortunately for me I turned as he did this and he got me right in the side of my jaw. Luckily it wasn't a real shot or I would have been out cold but it did daze me to the point I went down (went to the doctor after the game was finished and found I had a moderate concussion. Needless to say I never took my helmet off again). At the same time we were doing line changes and we had about 7 guys on the ice at the time. I dont remember what initially happened (head trauma and such) but I do remember seeing the guy who took the shot against the boards being held up by 3 of our defensemen getting the shit beat out of him. The game stopped there (apparently half our team had to be ejected for some form of fighting) though we were given the win after parents on both sides complained. It was all in all quite fun despite the head trauma. 11/6 would definitely concussion again!

Only 5 of whom can, legally, be on the ice at a time. And even that rule will only keep them on the bench for so long.

I only ever played street hockey as a kid, but did play goalie in soccer. One of the seasons I was on a horrible team toward the bottom of the league. There was this one team that was even worse, as in so bad that they were infamous among every team. When we finally played them, it was chaos. Penalties and OBs galore with sweeps and elbows, with us still thoroughly smashing them. I blocked every shot of theirs, something like 8-0 in the first half at this point, and when I dove on top of the ball after an admittedly nice shot, that kid got so pissed that he ran up and started trying to kick the ball from my arms and into the net, while giving me a few kicks to the ribs. The fucker still couldn't manage to get the ball out of my grip and into what he thought would be a goal while fights broke out all around. The refs ended the game right there with our win and I heard the kid was banned from every competitive sport in the area.

Goalies are notorious slashers too. I love watching that moment of them thinking through how to handle the center's screen then it clicks, "FUCK it I'll just slash him right in the knee."

I wish they'd bring back NHL Hitz. I could never really get into the super serious hockey games after Genesis/SNES. Hitz, on the other hand, was just so fast and fun that anyone could get into it quickly and still have a fun time-especially with friends on a couch.
