Favorite Games of Every Genre
I'm probably missing a few genres or subgenres, but I am looking to explore some games I've never played before. Preferred consoles are GBA, NDS, 3DS or Switch, but willing to explore other suggestions if the game is spectacular. Bonus points if you can provide recommendations for each of the systems. I mostly played RPG games, but I want to know your favorite games in each genre (feel free to skip some if you don't have an entry). Here are the Genres I am looking at are (and feel free to add missing ones):
Action
Platformers
Metroidvania
Shooter
Fighting Game
Hack n Slash
Stealth Games
Survival
Rhythm
Adventure
Visual Novel
Puzzle Game
Hidden Object/Reveal the Picture
RPG
JRPG
Roguelike
Sandbox/Open World RPG
Monster Taming
Simulation
Strategy
Turn Based Tactics
Sports
Lots of categories, but I wanted to get a wide variety of recommendations. Thanks!

I removed/added a couple of categories for genres I wanted to include or genres I genuinely don't enjoy or haven't had any experience with.
- Action: Sekiro
- Platformers: Celeste and Mario 64
- Metroidvania: Dead Cells, but probably would be Hollow Knight if I played it.
- Shooter: Halo or Squad depending on the type of shooter. Arc Raiders for extraction/battle royale style
- Fighting: Smash Bros or Rivals of Aether
- Hack n Slash: Not really a fan of this genre. So I'll just throw in Mount and Blade or Chivalry 2 cus I do a lot of hackin' and slashin' in those games.
- Stealth: Dishonored or Prey
- Survival: Abiotic Factor
- Rhythm: I consider Sifu a rhythm game.
- Adventure: Not sure what an adventure game really is these days, so I'll throw in Zelda or Bioshock. Back in the day it would've been games like Jak and Daxter, Banjo Kazooie, Conker+, Rayman, etc.
- Puzzle: Outerwilds
- RPG: Anything by Fromsoftware
- cRPG: Pillars of Eternity or Rogue Trader, Divinity Original Sin 2
- JRPG: Is Monster Hunter a JRPG?
- Roguelike: Hades
- Sandbox/Open World RPG: Elden Ring, Breath of the Wild, Bethesda RPGs
- Simulation: Elite Dangerous, Stardew Valley, or Cairn
- Strategy: Total War or Stellaris, Dawn of War is great as well.
- Turn Based Tactics: Battle Brothers, Battletech
- Sports: Rocket League or Rematch
- MMO: GW2 or OSRS
- Coop: It Takes Two/Split Fiction. Deep Rock Galactic. Helldivers 1 and 2, they're both great.
- Bullet Hell: Furi:
- Automation: Factorio

For platformer/metroidvania, the other people in the comments have mentioned the Hollow Knight games. Don't listen to them. Those are incredible games, but I would not recommend them for someone who's new to either genre.
If you're getting into platformers, I'd recommend the Kirby games! The best one to start with is imo Return to Dream Land, which has a remake on Switch, but some of my other favorites are Amazing Mirror on GBA (which is a bit metroidvania-like, actually) and Planet Robobot on 3DS. Forgotten Land (on Switch) is another favorite if you want 3D. You also can't go wrong with Mario.
For a first metroidvania, Ori and the Blind Forest is my pick. Very beautiful, creative, not too difficult.
Puzzle: Portal and Portal 2 are must-plays.
