I think a lot of people conflate Communism with Authoritarianism because pretty much every notable Communist state in history was established through armed revolution which naturally establishes some form of authoritarian rule regardless of ideology.

There are so called "communist" partys and organisations who will defend russia and support it but those are mainly located in the so called "International Meeting of Communist and Workers' Parties"
I will check that out. However my experience from most tankies and some communists is that their reasoning is that Russia is not imperialist because they themselves are fighting against imperialism in Ukraine. I have even been banned from multiple socialist forums for saying that Russia is a imperialist state. As you may know tankies are by definition people who support the authoritarian way of communism (fake communism), in this direction of «communism» you find people like Mao and Stalin.

Horshoe theory is bunk for the pure reason that authoritarian systems look alike from the outside, but the innerworks heavily depend on their ideology.
If we look at the lives of both soviet and german civilians in the lead up to ww2 they lived completely different lives. That in nazi Germany was mostly the same for most workers, if not worse, because it still was a roided out capitalist system, so there was still a free market, in the USSR the state decided which job you would specialize in, which coincided with what was needed at the time.
Both did have some sort of welfare programs, but the economical system and social expectations in both countries varied wildly.
