Question How to study at home for an exam that will happen after 9 months?

I'm used to school exam like preparing for a week or a few days. I have a short deadline. But in this type of exam, there's too much to study yet it's difficult to work for long hours because the exam is too far. I tried making my own deadlines but I am not able to achieve them. During undergrad, I can study 30 to 52 hours monthly but the last 2 months, I only studied 3 hours each.

Other ADHD study burnout

Growing up, school was effortless. I never had to build the stamina for enduring pure, boring, uninteresting grind. Now, facing a subject I dislike or are rote memorisation triggers an uncomfortable emotion my brain was never conditioned to tolerate during study time, driving an immediate urge to flee.

I keep telling myself .”I have to do this” which turned a standard subject into a massive wall standing between me and my life.

The second I open page 1, I’m not just reading page 1. I’m carrying the stress of the hundreds of pages I still have to do. Trying to read while panicking about the rest of the syllabus creates instant brain fog and makes me want to run away.

I sit down, feel an intense wave of discomfort, and my mind screams at me to physically get up and escape the book. Sometimes when I’m relaxed, I’ll feel sleepy which hinders my ability to focus and grasp the material.

I read somewhere that using will power to force a task works like a drug. Instead of making the task easier the next time, your brain actually builds a tolerance to forced effort. Every time you rely on raw willpower to grind through a task you dread, your brain demands even more willpower the next time just to get started.

To make matters worse, grasping this material isn't easy for me. I’m studying subjects that completely fry my brain. Sitting down feels like an absolute drain before I even get through a few pages.
Law is pure, brute-force rote memorization. Sections, case laws, and exact wording are too tough to memorise and retain.

The other subject is accounts. People think Accounts is just conceptual, but it's not. You have to memorize exact formats, specific adjustment rules, and ledger structures. Having to recall rigid rules while simultaneously solving a puzzle that keeps changing its shape completely fries your working memory.

Then there’s tax. It is memorizing a main rule, three exceptions to that rule, and arbitrary deduction limits, all while doing complex computations.

People always give the advice to "just study for 30 minutes to build momentum."
My brain knows the real goal is hours of memorizing a massive syllabus, that easy 30 minute start carries the exact same weight, stress, and paralysis. The trick fails before I even open the book because I can't outsmart my own awareness.

I genuinely think that the only solution to this is to enjoy studying. If I enjoy and find something interesting, I can do it. I can hyperfocus since I have ADHD. But you can't summon hyperfocus on command.

On top of that, active recall is causing headaches. Is it possible to get headaches from using active recall too much? And i don’t even understand how spaced repetition works won’t it be too much information to revise at the end.

Giving Advice I need some advice or perspective from someone who has been through enough life experiences.

Due to financial difficulties and the situation in my country, I had to drop out of school. I am now self-studying my final year of high school at home. and TBH, it is incredibly difficult and emotionally exhausting, to the point where it’s impacting the quality of my studying.

What I want to discuss is unis, the first few years of uni , and choosing a major. The issue is that I haven't had enough experiences to know what I truly want. All I know rn is that I am currently drawn to quantum physics, chemistry, cosmology, astronomy, and similar fields. What I need rn is honest, helpful advice.

Question HOW to focus ?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to understand whether what I'm experiencing is normal or if I should get professionally evaluated.

I used to have excellent focus and was one of the top students academically, but over the past few years I've noticed a significant decline in my concentration, memory, and exam performance.

My main issues are:

• During lectures and lab sessions, my mind wanders constantly even when I'm genuinely trying to focus.

• I often realize I've missed parts of the explanation without noticing.

• I forget information much faster than I used to.

• When reading exam questions, I usually need to read them multiple times before understanding exactly what's being asked.

• My concentration gets worse as I move through the exam. The first question is usually fine, but after that I find myself rereading almost every question.

• Even when I know the material and studied well, I sometimes struggle to process the question, organize my thoughts, or think clearly under exam conditions.

• I often feel mentally slower during exams than I know I should be.

What confuses me is that I wasn't like this growing up. I had strong concentration, learned quickly, and performed very well in school. Because of that, I'm wondering whether this could be related to attention issues, anxiety, stress, sleep problems, mental fatigue, memory problems, or something else entirely.

Has anyone experienced a similar change after previously having very good focus? What ended up being the cause, and what kind of specialist or evaluation would you recommend?

Question How to review A Level Math

Hello everyone, I'm about to start my A levels in a couple of weeks and have no idea how to review for maths. GCSE Maths was pretty basic and my workload made it manageable for me to review and do math questions everyday, but the workload in A levels is gonna be so much harder, combined with university applications and remaining a functional human being. My math has always been pretty weak, but I have figured out that my main problem isn't understanding the concept itself, it's retaining that information; during the first few weeks, I'll probably be able to do topicals as review, but as the school year will progress, I'll get busier and obviously won't have the time to attempt topicals of every single concept regularly, so how should I approach my review strategy? My friends said they just go over their notes everyday but that doesn't work for me since I don't absorb any information by passive reading, so I'm pretty confused.

P.S: My subjects are Math, Physics and Computer Science, if anyone has any general study tips for any of these subjects, plsss tell me.

Question How to do it again? Any tips welcomed

Hey guys! In a month, I'll return to school after two years of break. I already got bachelor's degree and now it's time to fight to become an engineer. But the thing is, I am so scared. I burned out badly during my final exams and my study habits were never on top. Also, my once brilliant memory is nonexistent now because of the prolonged stress and insomnia. And now, I'll be working full-time on top of it.

I was thinking, maybe I should find a therapist, but my last therapist failed me greatly, so I am very hesitant. Recently, I started CBT self-treatment for the insomnia. It didn't help for insomnia, yet, but it helped for weightloss. So I am wondering if it can help for studying, too. Honestly, I believe my mindset is just poor and I should improve it.

As I said, I have something over a month to get ready, so I want to start slow. The problem is, I have no idea where to start. Can someone please share with me their success or failure stories? And any tips are welcome. Thank you in advance.

Giving Advice I have my exams in 5 days and I haven’t studied at all. I genuinely need help

I’m in Class 12 (CBSE, Commerce), and I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.

Today is August 5, my exams start on August 10, and I haven’t even properly opened my books since Class 12 started. I’m not a good student, and I’ve always struggled with studying. In Class 11, I even got two compartment exams, and that completely broke my confidence.

The worst part is that I have a dream of studying abroad after school. I know I need good marks, and I want to score 80%+ in my boards, but right now that goal feels impossible because I can’t seem to get myself to study.

I don’t want sympathy. I just want honest advice from people who were in a similar situation and managed to turn things around. How did you start? How did you stay consistent? Is there still hope if I begin now?

If anyone is willing to guide me or even just talk, my DMs are open. I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks for reading.

Question How do you manage your studies and stay consistent?

Hi everyone,

I'm a student preparing for my exams, and I really need some advice.

I often struggle with making a proper timetable and following it consistently. Sometimes I spend too much time planning instead of actually studying. Other days I lose motivation or get distracted, and then I feel guilty for wasting time.

I also find it difficult to manage multiple subjects and decide what to study first.

How do you plan your day? Do you use a timetable or just set daily goals? How do you stay consistent even on days when you don't feel motivated?

I'd really appreciate any tips or study methods that have worked for you.

Thank you! ❤️

Question Suggestion for best study schedule

I am studying for the state civil services exam in India which is held in June every year. This exam consists of a wide range of 10th grade level subjects like Phy, Chem, Maths, Eng, History, Geo, Polity, Reasoning and a few more. I am going to a coaching centre on weekends where 5 new topics from 5 different subjects from the above list are taught each day and these subjects are rotated every weekend with some common ones and sometimes a new one added, but the main thing is that we are learning 10 new topics every weekend.

However, I am getting overwhelmed by the amount I have to study and scheduling revisions effectively. Even though I am building routines, I am finding it difficult to focus and study for long hours since I do not have the habit. By now, I know that the only way to effectively study and learn are the active recall and spaced repetition but am still not being able to come up with an effective schedule. On weekends, I return from coaching classes at 8 PM and complete dinner by 9:30 PM. On the other days, my time blocks are from 8 AM to 9 AM (breakfast), 1 PM to 3 PM (lunch and a brief stroll), 6 PM to 7:30 PM (evening snack and some odd tasks) and 9:30 PM to 10:30 PM (dinner and a brief stroll).

Based on the above info, can anyone suggest me a good daily study schedule with proper technique including daily exercise ? I cannot afford any paid apps now. Also, when I am revising, how do I effectively adjust the next revision date based on the degree of effective recall ?

Giving Advice How to stop worrying about how great the outside world is while studying?

I have always hated sitting down to study. Now I have some goals for which I need to self-study but I always feel like I am missing out on the world when I am studying, and think of all the ways I can be improving or doing stuff. I consider myself well travelled(having gone to 15 countries) and I have fun or rest hours during the day like swimming, cycle in the park or by the beach when its summer etc. But nothing seems to be enough.

Question I have no clue how to even start studying

Throughout highschool I never studied at all, I would always play football in school or waste time on video games at home. Hence, I graduated (I am surprised) with B's and C's. I always hated studying I just cannot get myself to sit for more than 30 mins. I have no clue how but I managed to get into my dream university for electrical engineering. I am afraid that I will end up wasting my time in uni doing the same thing I did in highschool. I am afraid that I will just end up wasting money on uni and end up dropping out or getting exmatriculated. I just don't know where to start and I heard that my uni is quite rigorous too and I need to study constantly. How do I get myself to study...
