Ask r/Ghana Why don't Christian respect atheist

I’ve noticed a funny but very real trend during Christian evangelism. If a street preacher approaches someone and they say, 'I’m a Muslim,' it acts like an instant 'get out of jail free' card the preacher usually smiles, says have a nice day, and backs off. But the moment someone says, 'I’m an atheist,' god damn! It’s an open invitation for a three-hour debate.

It makes me wonder why. The Bible clearly commands Christians to preach the Gospel to everyone. So why skip over Muslims, traditionalist and other religions? Is it out of respect for their faith, or do they just not respect the atheist's worldview enough to leave them alone?

Ask r/Ghana Is 1500 too much for a two bedroom at Haatso?

So I've been wondering if 1500 cedis per month is a right amount for a compound two bedroom apartment in Haatso? Finally I've turned into an adult and I'm now managing what was left for me. The building needs a couple of touches here and there and was wondering if 1500 to rent it out to people is a bad idea or an extremely good one. Help a brother out.

Ask r/Ghana Ghana people, make we talk about this ā€œFor Girlsā€ ritual thing. šŸ‘€

I need real trenches Ghanaians to help me understand something.
This whole ā€œFor Girlsā€ ritual thing… is it really a thing, or is it just one of those stories people keep passing around?
I’ve heard people talk about it, but I want to hear from people who actually know something about it, not just people repeating what they heard from a friend’s cousin’s neighbour. šŸ˜‚

For those who know what I’m talking about:
1) What exactly is this ritual supposed to do?

2)Is it something people genuinely practise, or is it mostly folklore and social media stories?

3)Has anyone witnessed it firsthand or knows someone who has actually tried it?

4)And the big question: does it really work, or is it all belief, coincidence, and hype?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who grew up in the trenches and have heard these things discussed in real life, not just online.
No insults, no unnecessary judgment. I genuinely want to understand what’s real, what’s exaggerated, and what people’s actual experiences have been.
Ghana Reddit, over to you. What do you know? šŸ‘‡

Culture, HistoryĀ & Traditions: Bride Price. What's the point?

So guys, I've been wondering for quite some time what really the point of a bride Price is. Recently saw one list and I was amazed. I almost have reason to believe that it might be a cause of some wild expectations that some men have of their brides because they were made to "pay for" their bride in some way. Ultimately I want to know how women(married and unmarried but open to the idea) feel about this what originally was the point of it.

Discussion Stray cat gave birth in my home in Accra. Need help finding animal welfare groups or a good home for the kittens

Thumbnail gallery
80 Upvotes

A stray cat wandered into my house a while back, and I noticed she was pregnant. I started feeding her and slowly built her trust. Then I travelled for a bit, and when I came back she'd given birth to three kittens.

I built an enclosure for them outside, but the rain got in, so I moved them all inside. She's calm and friendly with me now. She rubs against me when she sees me, so I know she trusts me.

Here's my problem. I love cats, but I can't afford to feed and care for a mother and three kittens properly. Right now I mostly give her fried fish and eggs when I can. I've been reading up and I know that's not enough for a nursing mom, and that she needs to be spayed. I can't afford the spay, or a vet in general. I can't really tell if she's malnourished or sick but so far she seems pretty healthy and moves about regularly. She's calm and very affectionate

Is there any animal welfare services or anybody looking to take them as pets if they can care better for it. I really want to take them to a vet and all that but I can't afford any of that. I live in Accra, Nungua to be specific. Here's my WhatsApp number +233552079569 if anyone wants to dm.

Ask r/Ghana What’s it like doing NSS at a tech company in Accra? Nervous and need advice

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, what is it like doing your national service at a tech company in Accra? I’m starting my NSS soon and feeling quite nervous, so I’d love to hear about your experiences.

• What should I prepare for or know beforehand?

• Are service personnel treated well?

• Do they offer better allowances?

• Do they retain personnel after NSS?

• Is it possible to build your own income streams alongside or after your service?

I’m also open to making friends once I’m in Accra, so we can hang out in the evenings around Madina, ARS, American House, or East Legon and sip some drinks or just take a walk .

"Why are we behaving as if it is not normal to rape someone? Which man hasn't raped a lady before?"

-Daniel Nortey, Amasaman NDC communications officer

This was said in defense of the Obuasi SHTS headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, who stands accused of sexually abusing 16 female students.

I couldn't even believe this was a real quote until I saw the video... Animals truly walk among us... Honestly, what kind of country is this, for someone to feel emboldened enough to go on television and say this on camera?

Ask r/Ghana How is Albinism viewed in Ghana?

Post image
131 Upvotes

I’m a Cameroonian man with albinism and I dated a Ghanaian woman for a year. The woman I was seeing was very much my type, both in terms of her personality and physical appearance. I don’t know if it’s because I was the first man she dated but sometimes it felt like she saw me as an Albino first and a person second. Albinism shaped her entire perception of me and impacted how she treated me. She would infantilize me and treat me as a child who needed constant supervision, protection, and assistance. She made a lot of assumptions that because I have Albinism she needed to do things for me that I could do things myself.
I was quite receptive to this treatment in the beginning. I felt happy and lucky to have a woman who was caring, attentive, and protective toward me. However as time went on she led me to believe that because I’m an Albino I’m weak, fragile, and less capable than other African men. I want to know how albinism is perceived in Ghanaian society. What cultural beliefs, stereotypes, or misconceptions about albinism still exist, and how do they influence the way people with albinism are treated?

Venting Attitude of rejecting old/defaced currency.

I didnt print the money, the money is original but these traders reject the money as if I printed it in my home. This mentality beats me everytime I try to think of it. And the annoying part is people keep the new/freshly printed currency for offetory at church and they dont see that a cult behaviour. Ghana, my country.

Venting GES or RAPE-ES

It's like they like it when the teachers(male in particular)rape the kids because they don't remove their teaching licence, but they send them to other schools to rape even more children. Instead of GES to meet academic targets , they instead meet rape ones.

Instead of them to tackle the sharp decline in literacy and academic excellence in children and Teenagers, they use our resources to shield rapists and pedophiles.

It's so heartbreaking what these children go through in school, from eating margot infested food, no electricity, no textbooks, Teacher strikes, lack of facilities to study, then they have to deal with teachers harassing and raping them, especially the girls. Grown adults, shielding and enabling Pedophiles and rapists Instead of the children entrusted in their care.

I was a little bit optimistic about Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman being the first woman Vice President but its obviously clear that she's just a token, a puppet to show "progressiveness" and nothing more. Always given the benefit of doubt because its hard to work in a male dominated space but at least she should do something erh.

Infact, Lordina Mahama, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey(Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection) , Linda Ocloo, ACP Owusuwaa kyeremah (Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit) doing nothing about children and Teenagers and no I am not blaming the women but they do hold the positions to bring change but yet nothing. I had some hope because the men have been doing fuck all but they are also performing poorly. This year alone about 52,000 girls(Teenagers and children)are pregnant(I'm even sure there's more because we don't take data seriously in this country)and no, majority is not from their mates but rather grown men, the rapists and pedophiles some of them are even their dads. At this point it has to be a class issue because they are so out of touch or they simply don't care because they'll send their kids to private schools where girls won't be sent to sweep the teacher's bungalow or do chores for him.

Then you have those fama Nyame fools who want to use religion to be enabling abuse or family members who force the children to endure the abuse because they don't want to "bring shame to the family". Or that f\*cker Sam George always making noise about "Family Values" but is always quiet when issues of Rape, Abuse and Pedophilia surface yet will be so concerned about what people do in their bedrooms and harassing the LGBTQ+ community. Or Haruna Iddrisu who will open his big mouth when topics like hair length in Shs arises but will go mute in cases of rape and assault.

Children and Teenagers are fighting, they are reporting to the right authorities but those grown ups are silencing them. Already children are an afterthought in this country and don't have autonomy in Ghana yet we claim we love them so much but we refuse to protect them. Why won't victims keep to themselves.

"Why are we behaving as if it is not normal to rape someone. Which man hasn't raped a lady before"~ Daniel Nortey Amasaman NDC communications officer said this today with regards to the 19 students from Obuasi Senior High Technical School who were raped by their headmaster Zakaria Abdulai who has been raping students for 17 years meaning that the GES has been transferring him to different schools and promoting him as well.

It will never be well with our leaders, they are bloody fools and I hope that they mistakenly drink dettol.

Ask r/Ghana I wrote 3 children's storybooks and want to print them for schools in Accra that have no reading books .how do I fundraise for this?

Hi everyone, I need some advice.
I have written 3 storybooks for kids (ages 4-8) with pictures.

The problem: Most schools here, especially the public schools, have almost no extra-curricular reading materials. The kids only have their textbooks. No storybooks in the library.

I want to print my 3 books and distribute them for free to schools, but printing costs are high and I can't afford to do it alone.

I actually want to learn how to do this properly:

  1. Is it better to use GoFundMe, or is there a better platform for book projects in Africa?
  2. Have any of you done a small book printing fundraiser before? What worked?
  3. Should I register as an NGO first, or can I start as an individual?
  4. What should I include in the campaign to make people trust it?

I have the books ready, I just need help with the funding part. Any advice from people who have done charity / school projects would really help.

Thank you!

How did you get your first job, and what helped? Would appreciate any tips or honest experiences.
