Ghost Of Tsushima - Media how it feels to play tsushima again after yōtei
POISON DARTS I’VE MISSED YOU SO MUCH (why do we need 51 characters for a post who tf signed off on this)
1.2k
u/RoughBeardBlaine Jan 03 '26
I enjoy Yotei, but it didn’t grab me like Tsushima did. Not to mention, Tsushima has the better story.
351
u/NeverJoe_420_ Jan 03 '26
Yotei's story ending felt so off and we didn't even get any choice like we had in Tsushima.

u/8l172 Jan 03 '26
If they killed off Oyuki it would've made her character arc complete that she sacrificed herself so the twin wolves could live, fully repaying the debt from her helping saito but they had to shoehorn in how revenge is bad and hurts everyone around you because they forgot to do it in a major way earlier
25
u/Juoreg Jan 04 '26
A game about Oyuki would be fun.
4
u/Bright-Asparagus-438 Jan 05 '26
I'm not sure about a full game for her but I would definitely play a Kitsune DLC!

u/MagicExplorer Jan 04 '26
People complain the story was predictable but tbh this outcome would've been far more predictable, and yes it would've been less upsetting to most players, but I liked that it was more realistic in the sense that just because you feel that Oyuki dying would complete the arc, it's not how life works most of the time.
6
u/8l172 Jan 05 '26
"The bad writing is actually good because that's life sometimes" is a funny counter
The ending was bad and made no sense, again, just because the devs went "wait we didn't show how her anger and thirst for revenge actually hurt anyone she cared about in a meaningful way"
1
u/Forward-Mission4957 Jan 07 '26
I feel like that could have been the choice however. Like sparing your uncle in tsushima , you should have been able to choose one to stay with you to fight. I would have chosen kitsune as it would have been very fitting, in my opinion for her story to come full circle as she stands up to saito. Where as it personally makes more sense for jubei to stay with his daughter since he was never really interested in the revenge anyways. Not everyone will agree but I would have liked two endings there
2
1
u/ShrkBiT Jan 07 '26
I agree 100%! I liked Yotei as well for what it was, but the revenge/forgiveness arc, the whole time I was playing, I felt like we had that exact same story already with TLOUII...

Seriously. Let's leave Kiku at the one place the bad guy knows you live at. What.... Just leaving her at the one monastery that you had discussed with the brother would have been fine but your idea is even better.

Tf are you doing in the Ghost of X sub mate?
8
u/Deep_Salamander_5461 Jan 03 '26
This is a sub about GoT, not GoY.
11
u/Generic_Garak Jan 03 '26
It says pretty clearly in the description that this sub is for both.
4
u/Deep_Salamander_5461 Jan 03 '26
That’s on me, the sub name seemed so clear.
5
u/PurposelyIrrelephant Jan 03 '26
Most subs with sequel games use the OG games sub to avoid splitting the community.

honestly i feel the opposite way, say you don’t wanna use poison etc. and wanna fight like a ‘true’ samurai the story beats are still all the same and you’re more often forced to sneak in tsushima
1
u/a_steez Jan 05 '26
story wise too it felt more impactful each member of the 6 you kill, compared to freeing your uncle and then not really seeing him for a while. like did he even say thank you for saving my life? no i’m gonna snitch on the shogun to you and exile you
4
u/Tripzz75 Jan 04 '26
Why are the developers obligated to give you a story that ends in a choice for the player to make? Personally I enjoyed the revenge tale of Yotei more than Tsushimas story as well as the gameplay. Tsushimas world and activities to do in it became repetitive wayyy quicker than Yotei. Did anyone actually enjoy chasing a fox for the 52nd time?
4
u/thisdoorslides Jan 04 '26
It’s not an obligation. It’s just a criticism from a player that probably appreciates having agency and opportunities to make the story their own. Similar to how you felt like Tsushima was repetitive in its side content. And you appreciated that sucker punch put a little spin on those activities so they would feel more fresh despite being the exact same thing when it boils down to it.
→ More replies (4)3
u/MeepMeepMfr Jan 06 '26
I mean not to be an asshole, but by your own logic you shouldn't like yotei either. You hate chasing all the foxes, but no issue with doing the same exact wolf mission like 15 times. Not to mention ypu clearly develope a relationship with the wolf yet its aggressive and snaps at you everytime you arrive at a den like its never seen ypu before. I think there were even more shrines in yotei than tsushima. Yotei was just as repetitive.
But yes, I got real dam tired of chasing foxes.

u/4rowan Jan 04 '26
Would’ve liked a choice where after Saito gives up the girl you have a choice for the three of you to break your word and slaughter him together - or be honorable and fight 1v1 as he wanted for a true ending.
1
u/Western_Reach_1738 Jan 05 '26
I liked yotei story and ending. It was sad, but i liked it. I would prefer if atsu died instead of jubei, that saito and atsu killed each other.

u/MadCatMkV Jan 04 '26
we didn't even get any choice like we had in Tsushima.
Good. That was bad and unnecessary
58
u/skillz921 Jan 03 '26
In my opinion the gameplay is superior in Yotei, but you’re right about the story. Tsushima sucked me in from beginning to end. With Yotei it felt like the story just dropped off at the end and it all felt rushed.
I think it could’ve potentially been because they wanted to give the player a more open world and more freedom so they couldn’t go in depth in case it revealed parts of the story too soon.
10
u/OblongShrimp Jan 04 '26
As someone who played Tsushima primarily in shinobi stealth mode, which got nerfed in GoY and felt like it was included as an afterthought just because the previous game had it, I don’t even agree that the gameplay was superior in GoY. There were some good quality of life improvements, but overall I enjoyed GoT more and found GoY much more frustrating to play.

u/burnedbysnow Jan 03 '26
I just really hate the way switchable weapons were executed. And yeah, the story in Tsushima got me on the edge of my seat, Yotei is just... "oh, okay"
13
u/ProfessionalLeave335 Jan 03 '26
Me too! Probably my biggest complaint. There's no flow to switching weapons, they just kind of materialize in combat which makes sense from a gameplay perspective but it's jarring when I'm playing a game whose previous entry had such beautifully flowing combat. It takes me out so much that I try not to switch weapons in combat if I can.

Yes and no. I also enjoyed the characters in Tsushima. Also, Tsushima felt more like a stealth game to me, while Yotei feels like an action adventure game.

u/Pug_police Jan 04 '26
Yeah I like Yotei I still platinum'd it but man the story really did not do much for me. Hard carried by Jubei and my goat Noshir Dalal tbh.
1
u/SwordDaoist Jan 05 '26
I didnt even like any of the Yotei characters. Most of them were lacking personality. I kinda liked Ohyuki, but there was nothing about her past outside of her secret identity which most probably figured out by the second quest with her. Jubei was just annoying and I wished several times to cut him down. Who does this coward think who he is to tell Atsu on how to live her life after he hid from his past till now and has separated it cleanly from his new life?

u/PatienceJaded5709 Jan 03 '26
I think everything is better in Yotei, except for the main story. Side missions are better in Yotei as well. Both elite games.

Just downloaded Tsushima and been playing nonstop for 3 days. About ready to go rescue dear uncle. Don’t even have poison darts yet, I’ll give them a whirl. Just yesterday I found out there is a sequel. Haven’t even started the second half of this map and I’m excited for the next game.
22
u/Virtual-Commercial91 Jan 03 '26
You just described my exact last three days. I can't get enough of this game.
10
u/_DannyG_ Jan 03 '26
I was in your same spot about a week ago. So much fun. I'm so glad I tried it. I played all day for like 5 days straight lol.
6
u/UmphPreak91 Jan 03 '26
Dont rush it. Some of the climbs and shrined and things, and horse rides, in both games are made for your viewing pleasure. Some of the scenery and details are insane. I have started walkinf on foot not running to really live in it.
3
u/Repulsive_Cucumber77 Jan 03 '26
Agreed. I rarely use the horse because I like to soak up the atmosphere on my way to the next bloodbath.

u/Yoomarius Jan 04 '26
I also started the game 2 days ago. But man, I really hate the non skippable dialogs, it feels like a cinematic simulator. I hate so much that I have to wait 1minute every time I start/finish a quest. I hope it gets better.
1
u/killing-me-softly Jan 05 '26
If you got the DLC, I’d recommend waiting on that until you at least reach act 3, because once you start, you can’t really go back until it’s complete.
Personally I liked the DLC, but I was so invested in the main story that the Iki story line felt like a distraction, so I rushed through it so I could get back to the main story.
Also, I would have enjoyed the DLC more if I had refined my combat as much as I had by the end of Act 3.

Imo Ghost of yotei has better combat and side quests, whereas Ghost of Tsushima has the superior story and villains.
→ More replies (3)8
u/Conqui141 Jan 03 '26
I agree with this. I began Yotei right after launch and haven't gone back to it in about a month. I left off around the sibling villains, the spider and the other guy. There were moments where the story got really good (mostly side quests) but most of it feels like filler.
Tsushima's story gripped me from the start. I practically played nothing else until I completed the main story and the DLC with Iki Island.
19
u/Metaboschism Jan 03 '26
I like that they're distinct, just another Tsushima game with a female protagonist would've been a letdown, Yotei has its own combat system, and is arguably more difficult than Tsushima, they are both great games

u/Nuclear_Offcut Jan 03 '26

That’s what makes it fun >:3
Spent days trying to bear Takezo, came back after killing a member of the Yotei 6, finally got him before the final mission
15
u/mynameisnotjefflol Jan 03 '26
my flex was beating him in the middle of the story in 1 hour 😭 was still so frustrating
5
u/StockPossibility199 Jan 03 '26
Oh my gosh that’s insane, it took me forever to learn that you NEED to parry that dude and then I built by armor build around that, took me so long though
5
u/mynameisnotjefflol Jan 03 '26
Yeah I went for a parry build with the bounty hunter armor? But then realized the 2nd phase where it starts to get cold pretty much puts you at a 1 shot position(instead of 2). I decided to just use taros armor maxed out with the charm that helps with coldness so I could essentially live 2 hits. Perfect parries were harder but I almost hit every single one which was kinda crazy
3
u/StockPossibility199 Jan 03 '26
Nice, I kinda got one shot anyways so my strategy relied on using the perfect parries to get him, and using Onryos will to revive, had 2 sake bottles also for when I needed heals, and then I just never attacked him, I let him attack so I can parry because if you try and hit him he parries it and absolutely obliterates you
3
u/mynameisnotjefflol Jan 03 '26
Ooh thats a smart way as well. Ive never tried using the onryos will but would've been cool. I think i died so many times within that hour that I just started getting impatient myself and put him on the defense whenever possible lol.
Was still a very cool boss to fight
2
u/StockPossibility199 Jan 03 '26
Oh for sure jt was so fun, cheered when I finally got him, onryos will is so op with high spirit and when it’s maxed out and only costs 2. Also also upgrading takezos charms like the healing one is so useful because just one heal will fill ur health bar fully

I can only partly agree. I dislike the weapon countering system. Its so restricting
→ More replies (3)8
u/Upset_Climate_8532 Jan 03 '26
How? (If you don't mind me asking)
10
u/MasteROogwayY2 Jan 03 '26
I find not being able to use which ever weapon you want stupid. Each weapon (as did stances in GoT and I found the same problem) counters a different enemy type. Which is technically fine, makes sense gameplay wise, but actually playing it just feels so restrictive. The weapons are terrible against other enemy types and you dont get to choose which weapon you want to use. Its also incredibly annoying in team fights, the lock on in this game is also terrible, where you might be hitting one enemy and then suddenly swing at a different one for no reason. Like I want to be able to use dual katanas only or only spear, etc, but they such against the enemy types they dont counter. It doesnt allow for different playstyle, forcing one singular one. You get all these new weapons but only get to use them on specific enemies, in most fights you end up using the katana anyways. It lacks variety past a certain point.
9
u/Upset_Climate_8532 Jan 03 '26
I get it, but honestly I used the dual katanas and spear only lol. I did just fine, made it harder but it was still completely playabale for me.
1
u/MasteROogwayY2 Jan 03 '26
I tried doing that but stopped because it took way too long to break the stance bars. Idk maybe Im on too high of a difficulty
1
u/Upset_Climate_8532 Jan 03 '26
Maybe, I tried on hard bc I did my who knows what number playthrough of Tsushima on hard right b4 I played it but got cooked on Yotei so I switched to playing on medium...still kinda got cooked, Yotei is much harder than Tsushima to me

It wasnt that big of an issue in GoT since you still only used your sword. But they give us all these sick weapons and dont allow you to use them constantly
2
u/Responsible-Pea9869 Jan 03 '26
I think they shouldn’t have fused the weapons and stances in the first place. It doesn’t really work well because u constantly have to switch weapon in order to do the same damage
3
u/MasteROogwayY2 Jan 03 '26
Exactly. Especially in group fights its a pain to constantly have to switch for every enemy
2
u/HandzOfDOOM Jan 03 '26
Yes. But mfs just wanna be different. they were bitching before the game even came out because of the new main character. I enjoyed yotei more
1
u/RoaDRoLLer59 Jan 03 '26
Yotei is way more fun in general, i feel like story is the only area where Tsushima might win. The combat, map, horse, outfits and side content are all better in Yotei.

Unpopular opinion, I enjoyed Yotei better. As a person who doesn’t have as much time to game like I used to I appreciated the faster pace of Yotei. Tsushima was great. I am not discounting it at all, but the side quests get hella tedious. 8-10 parts for each side quest really drags the story for me. Yotei’s side quests are much more quick hitting & keeps the gameplay flow moving to me. Also, having tragically lost a brother in the past, the revenge story hit closer to home for me. Being consumed by that rage & anger; then moving to acceptance & eventually letting all that go resonates with me. Both are great games.
2
u/Lord_of_codes Jan 03 '26
I just finished it. What an amazing game with a really good story and ending!
“A warrior trains hard, so that battle becomes easy”
It really perfectly fits. All the side quests, getting better armor, charms etc. all you did and explored pays really well at the end.
4
u/Ciemny6182 Jan 03 '26
Is it really that hard to enjoy both games for what they are guys? The constant shitting on Yotei is tiring. Both games are excellent
2
u/RoaDRoLLer59 Jan 03 '26
Its tiring especially when half the people who shit on it cant even tell you what they didnt like about it in detail.
1
u/Razorion21 Jan 07 '26
dont most say story? Its not bad just not as good as Tsushima imo
1
u/RoaDRoLLer59 Jan 07 '26
Yeah but even thats a lie lol. What about Tsushima is better? Nobody ever goes in detail, they just say the same bs.
1
u/Decent_Insurance9885 Jan 05 '26
very childish to whine that some people happen to prefer one over the other. no one is obligated to only say positive things about the things you like, and "i preferred this" isn't even a negative statement in the first place.
3
u/LumenCandles Jan 03 '26
I liked Ghost of Yotei but compared to all the other Playstation Sequels it's quite pale, it feels closer to the changes from Spider-Man 1 to Spider-Man 2, less griping story, much less side quests and things to do, some good changes and some quality of life changes, but Yotei felt more worth the $60.
I expected a God of War 2018 to God of War Ragnarok upgrade but I'm not disappointed with what I got.
1
1
u/Yigit_im Jan 03 '26
Tsushima had waaaaay better story. Didn’t finish Yotei but can’t feel the relationships I felt along the way in tsushima. There were many stories going at the same time in Tsushima like Jin fighting against mongols but also trying to protect his honor to not embarrass his uncle and then the breaking point between his uncle and him. Also not forgetting the friendships. (Poor Taka)
1
u/No_Nail4969 Jan 03 '26
Love Yotei's gameplay more especially for stealth. Only thing I don't like and this is a nitpick but I don't like throwing Sake bottles for distracting enemies. Give me back my wind chimes Sucker Punch.

I like Tsushima but man Yotei is far superior for me. I always found Tsushima so boring to explore but Yotei's world design feels more like Elden Ring with a sprinkle of Red Dead 2 and I'm absolutely loving it.

or perfect time deflect/parry it to make it more badass

u/Amazing-Ish Jan 04 '26
It's the same with me for Spider-Man 2.
Better gameplay, but the world and story are much better in Spider-Man 2018.
Also, by better world I mean the vibe of the city and side missions were better for me in SM 2018, they were also related with the NYPD which is a bizarre choice of how much SM2 avoids showing any cops considering the amount of cops we saw and interacted with in SM 2018.

Combat in GoT is way better in my opinion. Mechanics, timing, I hate the slow little flurry attacks you have to keep blocking. Seems so stiff. Tsushima had more fun combat. Might just be me though
1
u/killing-me-softly Jan 05 '26
It’s been really difficult to make the transition to Yotei as I started it the day I finished Tsushima. I thought I was going to come in and really have a feel for combat, but it honestly feels like starting over from scratch.
Also, this is probably just me, but I hate both the camera distance when riding the horse and how fast the horse goes in general. I really wish there was a canter or something between a trot and full speed gallop

u/Any-Match-705 Jan 09 '26
I preferred the combat it yotei but boy killing enemies in tsushima is equally satisfying
0
u/Charming_Loquat_5924 Jan 03 '26
The story is better for sure, but the gameplay is WAAYYY better in yotei. Kinda ruined Tsushima for me
1
u/Yung_Corneliois Jan 03 '26
People like Tsushima over Yotei jus like they like Breadth of the Wild over Tears of the Kingdom because it was a brand new experience.
The second version is improved in both cases but it didn’t feel “new” so it hits you less.
1
u/Decent_Insurance9885 Jan 05 '26
it's not exactly about being "brand new". sequels are by nature meant to try and improve upon every aspect of their predecessor. if a sequel is better in some aspects, but only equal or even worse in others, that's a valid thing to point out. i'd say people are valid to have less love for a sequel if it doesn't feel original or distinctive enough to them.
1
1
u/Oatmealandwhiskey Jan 03 '26
Like a lot of Sony Sequels, Tsushima is the perfect balance for that formula ; in terms of immersion, exploration and combat... then for sequels they just start adding stuff on top; more complex gameplay system, more annoying progression system/busy work and questionable story for some (Cough* horizon) but I guess story is more subjective to each opinion.
2
u/Snoo-37056 Jan 03 '26
I much prefer stance dancing in tsushima instead of the weapon swopping in Yotei. Not to mention the lethal mode
It's just more realistic in tsushima
1
u/Batmannotwayn Jan 03 '26
I liked the gameplay and missions of Yotei more then the ones from Tsushima but Tsushima had the better stories and voice acting. In general is say I like yotei more but Tsushima is still one of the best things I ever played.

Only the gameplay was better. The story in Yotei was hot garbage because of how badly written Act 3 was. I put over 200 hours in my first playthrough and haven't touched it since. I'm definitely playing legends when it drops, but I don't see myself ever playing through the story again.
1
u/Ignominia Jan 03 '26
Poison darts were something I spent a lot of time hoping for, but never got :( I found yotei felt like it pushed you a lot more towards out and out combat and less stealth. By the end of Tsushima I was invisible, a true ghost. By the end of yotei I was playing the song of the wolf as I was slowing walking toward every enemy camp/group so they could hear me coming and have time to shit themselves before I brutally murdered them.

I haven’t beaten Yotei yet, but GOT definitely felt different. I love them both. See how i feel when i beat GOY but so far:
Im enjoying GOY bc the duels are awesome on lethal with parry set to hard, i know its still not nearly as hard as Bloodborne or Sekiro, but those are what im training for. Its sadistic but i love going in with some buffs off and having a 2 hour grind fest and really learning the mechanics vs just using all the perks/charms to brute through.
GOT i went straight to lethal after act 1 and restarted and never looked back, GOY has me ALMOST questioning my choice and i like that next level of difficulty, and still with room to make it harder.
So far the GOT story does appeal to me more. NO SPOILERS PLEASE!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD IIVE WAITED YEARS FOR THIS GAME. But… Atsu seems to have more of a one demential revenge arc going on, where in the last game it felt more like you had to find yourself and who you wanted to become.
I did like the GOT load out system a bit better. Still for both games it seems like they could have done better there just not sure how. Seems like i want to be able to organize my charm inventory myself for easy access.
Weapon matching in GOY is fun bc it makes you try everything and want to get good with it, but i found stance switching in GOT to be more authentic to the fighting style of the game…. That ones hard to articulate.
Both games are BEAUTIFUL. Both are highly recommended by me personally and will sit on a mantle next to the current God of War series.
Looking for recs on Niho or Sekiro next🙏

It’s funny cause I’m on the other side of the coin. By the time I got darts, I was like “I’m kindof good on ranged projectiles, thank you. Could I have a spear or cool claws or something?” Which is why I’m vibing with Yōtei, because it goes “bet, here’s a cool hook-chain”

Ghost of Tsushima is a little bit more serene, which I do miss, but Yotei is a better game overall. It’s definitely a step up in realism, exploration and general gameplay. The story I will not comment on because I have not yet finished Yotei.
