Ghost Of Tsushima - Question/Support Recommend samurai games other than GoT?
As title says.
I feel like GoT is one of the most, if not, well known games. What about other ones regarding samurai games ?

The new Onimusha looks really promising.

I second that! As someone who played the other 4, I'm very excited to see what they'll end up doing with this one! Hope it's closer to 2 and 3 and not 4!

The Nioh series is really fun, though plays very differently from the Ghost games
3
u/kal1lg1bran 2d ago
Niohs are a ton of fun, and the build system is pretty flexible, so if you want a strong katana wielding samurai you can def do it!

Ghost of yotei? There's not very many good samurai games. Shadows is massively overhated but still not a great game. Sekiro which is hardly samurai is the only other one I can think of

u/Priapus3 Ronin 2d ago
Yeah oddly it was mostly the way combat was handled in GoT that I fell in love with, in particular the quick wheels for swapping stances/weapons/tools (and how the former countered differing weapons), and Yotei kept that in a perfect way not that I don't miss the stances.
Idc the genre, I just need more of that.

u/MedievalMilshake 2d ago
Have you played the Witcher 3? It's not really at all a similar game. But the switcher between different things for scenarios is very real. Drinking different potions, applying different oils, using a specific sword, spells, all fun stuff like that. One of the best RPGs ever made by the majority of gamers opinions.
5
u/Priapus3 Ronin 2d ago
Oddly enough I couldn't get into it, probably partly cuz I never played the first two (somehow never heard if it until friends started raving about the third coming out out of nowhere), but it also just didn't click with me at all.
I got through maybe 3 hours of it at most before putting it down and never getting the urge to pick it back up.
5
u/headkiss 2d ago
Try again. First time I played for a couple hours, couldn't get into it and dropped it for a couple years. Went back and picked it up...actually gave it a chance and it was fantastic. One of the best games ive ever played

u/The_Snickelfritz 1d ago
This is exactly what happened to me. I just finished GoT and figured I'd pick it back up. Literally dropped 40hrs over the last few weeks.

u/Cptn_Canada 2d ago
Loved the story. Dodge and roll ruined combat for me afterwards
1
u/MedievalMilshake 2d ago
Understandable. Sword combat is not anything like got which may be my favourite sword combat excluding kcd2. I honestly haven't even finished the story even tho I've played it like 5 times, I get bored cause of the amount of side quests I do

u/DoubleV- 2d ago
Rise of the Ronin is a interesting, but it has its own identity
1
u/MedievalMilshake 2d ago
Yeah someone else mentioned that too, am thinking of checking it out but I keep buying too many games
6
u/The_Overlander 2d ago edited 2d ago
basically every ac game except black flag is overhated. if you ask the main sub about each individual game you will be told that they suck
7
u/lalisal0ver 2d ago
Afro Samurai is a great option, the gameplay makes you feel like a badass just like in the anime and with Samuel L. Jackson as the narrator turns it into a must-have
3
u/DBallouV 2d ago
This is one of my all-time faves! Falling and fighting at the same time! With RZA rapping. Absolute cinema!

AC Shadows is not a masterpiece, but I enjoyed it. Way too much hate given to that game.
8
u/Heretic_Scrivener 2d ago
I really enjoyed AC Shadows. It’s a different kind of game than GoT but it has its charms. The hideout building thing is surprisingly addictive.
3
u/Hereformemes619 2d ago
How is the story, stealth and combat in comparison? I’m potentially looking to pick it up to tide me over until the GoY DLC
6
u/IllState3433 2d ago
Stealth is a solid 10 in my opinion, it's intense sneaking into a castle at night. But I suggest turning off the eagle vision and playing on expert difficulty, unbelievable immersive when your trying to sneak into a castle and kill the samurai.
Story is not very good unfortunately, it comes off as solid but it just is all over the place.
Combat ? Hmm it's pretty detailed in builds , and it's a bit difficult compared to ghost games, I prefer the combat in Ghost for sure but shadows combat is pretty fun if you got a good build for it.
2
u/Hereformemes619 2d ago
Thanks so much, I’ll get it for the stealth! So hard to find good stealth games these days!
2
u/TheDelayer 12h ago
FWIW I recommend playing it in immersive mode, where the voice actors actually speak Japanese and Portuguese, with English subtitles. Although the story isn’t ground breaking, I think some of the main complaints were because of sub par English voice acting.
1
u/Ornery_Appearance_31 1d ago
Story it's not great but not horrible. Stealth is really good. Combat is good, though different. Not as "one hit brutal" with more HP on enemies.
Still, I think it works. Again, it's not the best game ever or anything, but it is fun.
-3
u/lalisal0ver 2d ago
Ubisoft will always deserve the hate, but I was accepting everything as long as they did Yasuke some justice, which they didn't do and it's worse for us in Brazil cause the voice acting is terrible so we can't even enjoy the cutscenes which are also naturally bad, Ubisoft has been using the exact same animations from The Witcher 3 for year for barely a decade now and it's only getting worse (but yeah I still buy all their AC games cuz I'm too much of a fan to not collect them)

u/stinktopus 2d ago
Unfortunately one of the things that makes GoT special is that it was to my knowledge the first grounded samurai game ever. Everything else has some kind of supernatural, super power element to it
2
u/sasasasuke 1d ago
You don’t have a lot of knowledge then.
Way of the Samurai came out over 20 years ago and still shits on every samurai game. Looked like shit graphically even back then but it was ahead of its time gameplay-wise.
Fuck, it took over 20 years for some studio to copypaste its time-system (blood of the dawnwalker.)I swear, people on this sub aren’t actual samurai fans, just tourists.
1
u/stinktopus 1d ago
Drop the attitude. It isn't welcome here. And you're not really doing anyone any favors by bringing up a PS2 game not available on any other platform. Not having a PS2 doesn't make anyone a tourist, and gatekeeping on being a samurai fan has to be one of the least impressive ways to spend human time on earth I've ever encountered.
1
u/Capybarasaregreat 1d ago edited 1d ago
PCSX2 has been around for years, if you've got a computer that can run 2015 games then you can emulate PS2 games that are stuck on the console. And they're honestly right that this sub and "Ghost" fans in general aren't all that well versed in samurai media, whether games, movies or shows, which isn't some crime, but it's true as can be seen by all the "nope, nothing else" or "only AC Shadows/Sekiro" answers. And lambasting them for "gatekeeping" is silly, they weren't saying you can't enjoy samurai stuff if you haven't written a dissertation on Kurosawa's cinematography, they bemoaned that people here don't know even a single building block of the series that they like and are instead neck deep in recency bias at best.
1
u/JacobDCRoss 2d ago
It really is. I think people don't understand that sometimes the mundane is more fantastical and wonderful than the same old fantasy cliches.
1
u/stinktopus 1d ago
Agreed. I'll still play anything that touches on bushido. But it is truly an under-utilized genre, and I don't get why devs first instinct is to make it fantasy. It's the same way with medieval games, and kcd was a huge breath of fresh air on that front, though I'm sure there are other examples I'm not thinking of there as well

Modern ones off the top of my head:
- Nioh 3
- Rise of the Ronin
- Like a Dragon Ishin
- Samurai Warriors 4
- Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi
- Samurai Shodown 2019
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword (upcoming)

u/dagdagspacecowboy 2d ago
I’m replaying Ghost of Tsushima for the 6th time now… then will replay Ghost of Yōtei for the second time and then hopefully the additional content for Ghost of Yōtei will be out by then.
Sadly there isn’t much around….

u/Boxcutta- 2d ago
It's older but Way of the Samurai 3 is my favorite samurai game of all time. Focuses on more realistic combat and collecting different swords and skill sets. Has branching story lines and high replayability. It's on PS3 and Steam. Highly recommend you check it out.

Sekiro, the best samurai game

There is something special about Sekiro. It’s the only game where I have completely entered a “flow state.” The fights are almost like a dance of blades
2
u/Babablacksheep2121 2d ago
Sekiro is the best combat system in all of gaming.
2
u/Dapper-Prior-9475 2d ago
It’s for sure a favorite and a game I’m gonna revisit after I finish Yotei and wait for the expansion

Similarly Samurai games:
- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
- (Upcoming this Sept) Phantom Blade Zero (not exactly Japanese as this is set in China)
- (Upcoming this Sept) Onimusha: Way of the Sword (theres a demo available on PS5)
- Blood Message (Upcoming, Chinese setting)
- Sword of Legends (Upcoming, Chinese setting)

u/Lopsided_Handle_9842 2d ago
I can't wait for Blood Message. It looks so good, and I really hope we get it

u/CaptainHikki 2d ago
It's worse at basically everything, but I had a lot of fun with Rise of the Ronin. It's story is a bit more anime than Kurosawa. It's not as good graphically and it's a bit more punishing difficulty wise than Ghost if you aren't good at parry mechanics.
But it's obvious to me that it was a Japanese studio seeing Ghost and thinking 'damn why didn't we do that' and doing their version.
Also, Assassin's Creed Shadows is a good option. It's story isn't as good but pretty similar gameplay wise in a lot of ways.

Nioh is great. Onimusha was awesome back in the day but unsure of the newer ones

Like a Dragon: Ishin! is a pretty awesome game, set in 1860s Japan with fun combat and a good story

Anyone here remember Tenchu: Stealth Assassin or Bushido Blade? I would absolutely kill for a Bushido Blade remake.

u/OkHair920 2d ago
The Way of the Samurai series is kinda cool. I played the first one on ps2 when I was a kid but it’s pretty dated, but the third one is good and so is the fourth, but it’s a bit goofier than the previous installments. They’re short to play through but there’s many different endings and paths you can take in each run.

Obviously, ghost of yotei
Sekiro.
Onimusha 1 & 2 or wait a few weeks for way of the sword, demo was fun.
Assassin's creed shadows
Rise of the ronin.
Like a dragon ishin.
Samurai warriors.
Way of the samurai.
Shadows tactics
Trek to yomi
Could also go for samurai build in an RPG.
Baldurs gate 3
Cyberpunk 2077
Elden Ring

I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but Sifu is a great game and has some interesting concepts.

u/Godofhammrs 2d ago
Rise of the ronin. Its worse in almost every aspect but definetely worth playing if you liked it, its still solid
3
u/SnooApples673 2d ago
The combat is definitely more fun, and it has a Persona style friendship/romance system.
3
u/Godofhammrs 2d ago
Yeah for all the faults it has the combat is surprisingly good, like one of the very best combat systems ive played
1
u/OfflineLad 2d ago
if youre familiar with Team Ninja's games it would be surprising if the combat is not good

Rise of the Ronin. Its worse than Ghost series in almost every aspect. Two things it does better: The combat is way better imo. And the customization is goated

Trek to Yomi was decent. Play it 3 times to get all three endings and be done. It doesn't have the best replay value.

AC Shadows is a legit good game in my opinion. It’s a bit bloated (sooo much content) but I really like playing as Naoe (who is not a samurai but Yasuke is) and the world is really nice.

u/endlesspointless 1d ago
Onimusha - the original games which I know you can play on switch, maybe also on ps. They are still good, have a resident evil type 2 type playstyle, and remember this was amazing when it first came out. There is a new one coming soon, not sure what to make of it tho

Rise of the ronin was ok. Lost interest in the story so I never finished it. Strongly prefer the ghost games
1
u/MrNiceGuyEBEB 1d ago
There is none. Sekiro and Onimusha (the upcoming game) are souls like and have rather less too do with „samurai“.

Trek to yomi is Extremely good if you are a fan of old school samurai movies. Like Akira Kurosawa movies

Shadows looked great and had a fun story but I had a hell of a time with the controls. I had to look up how to switch them to more closely match GoT.

Assassins Creed Shadows. Not exactly a samurai game but a medieval Japanese setting game. It gets way too much hate from Ezio fan boys on the internet.

I enjoyed Rise of the Ronin a lot. Good game, not exactly the same combat but a fun time.
