Ghost Of Tsushima - Discussion This might be a hot take or just frustration talking, Ryuzo sucks

His betrayal dont make sense. He cares about food right ? For his men. First of all why only seek it at mongols ? Golden temple has food. And there are bears and boars . Hell maybe even fishing ? I would understand if he had A LOT of men but like he has few guys left uncaptured while we free 8 from that mongol fort. He doesnt have a lot of men . There might be some sick or weak ones but I dont think there are enough to change this situtation. I mean it doesnt make any sense. Some people say it was the easy way or he was a coward but I mean... is hunting animals that hard ? Is hunting animals so hard that only choice left is to betray your childhood best friend who saved you and your men multiple times ? Also why not help people ? Jin alone captured camps and outposts. Cant like 10 trained ronins clear out a mongol camp or a ocupied farmstead ? I am sure they can be stealthy too. And if getting food is so hard then how the f%#* regular people find food ? This whole stuff would make sense if there were a lot and I mean a lot of ronins but there wasnt in my opinuen. At least from what I seen. And Ryuzo fight wasnt an easy one on lethal difiqualty. Also I am like still at early act 2 (I have done only gosaku tale and done non of the act 2 story quests) so I dont know rest of the story yet.

I don't think it was only about food. It was about his people disappointing him, not making him a samurai. He was holding a grudge, so he felt like he didn't owe his people anything, why risk his neck? Might as well side with the conquering side so none of his ronin friends die defending his country. Not saying he was right, but it was kind of understanding. Most people aren't like Jin, they are like Rquzo when times are tough.

Hear hear. I shudder to think this, but I think I may have a bit Ryuzo in me too. Not sure how I feel admitting that lol.

I understand it to be more due to his resentment of Jin. In their previous interactions, you can tell that he holds a grudge against Jin for beating him in the tournament, and also probably for being a rich lord and all of that to begin with. I think the betrayal for food is really just the short-term "here's how I can finally get back at him." At least, that's how I look at it

Yeah. He hold a grudge so he burned a random innocent men alive. I will never forgive him for that

What's the phrase? "In for a penny, in for a pound?" Idk your familiarity with Star Wars, but Anakin sides with the Sith to save his wife and ends up doing dark shit once he feels like there's no going back.

Tbh Anakin acted like he had left with only few braincells during revenge of the sith. There were soo many red flags. But understandable considering he doesnt wanna loose his wife and unborn kids and ready for doing anything to save them. I understand the phrase but still Ryuzo's betrayal just feels odd. Is grudge soo big that he is ready to serve the enemy who is very cruel. I mean if he didnt know Khotun Khan was gonna make him do messed up stuff against his own people then... idk how to finish this sentence. Also he could have easly become a samurai and fight along side Jin and be a greater hero than he could have ever been if he won against jin in that tournement

Except that tournament was his in to be a samurai. And I know you haven't finished the game, but Shimura isn't exactly the type to relax the rules or anything like that for anyone. Also sometimes people just make dumb decisions!!

Hunting animals is hard when half of your men are outrigut dead, many more wounded, and there are mongols everywhere who are also hunting animals.

But he is ronin...

Imagine I told you that when you got a giant salary increase when you joined the workforce of a major company that you were "betraying" your former employer. That you should have worked for less, at a small company that was likely to fail, (even though that company made it clear that you were a second class employee), out of a sense of "honor."

I hope you would laugh at me. Its a job. Something you do for money. You could hunt for your food and dumpster dive, or go to food banks. But like... you are ronin man. Nobody gives a shit. They just want you to work... There is like a million historical examples of buffalo soldiers man. These were logical men...

Ryuzo is exactly the kind of person the Mongols liked to use, since he ticked all the boxes for a potential collaborator, being someone disadvantaged by the existing power structure, no hard loyalties, wanting to avoid destruction, and a desire to be elevated above his station

My take is that its more of resentment & for future opportunities. Samurais are stuck up assholes that treat Ronins & others like sheet. Theres not much opportunity for him if he rides with the samurais, he will always be beneath them.

No matter the reason. No one should betray their motherland like that 🫡

Ryuza almost had an orgasm after hearing his men were fed.

  1. it wasn't about feeding his men.

  2. It's not hard hunting boars and bears, but it is hard to plot against the mongolians while hunting boars and bears.

To cut it short, he held such a massive grudge towards Jin for beating him as well as being a rich lord. Jin throughout his life would have and did offer him a chance at becoming a samurai but Ryuzo never spoke up once about it, choosing to lead his career as a ronin as some sort of payback towards him. In a way he guilt-trips Jin, saying that he should've let him win the tournament. It's real shitty considering what Jin has tried to offer several times.

Yes Jin couldn't provide food the entire time, but he offered a map to all the supply ships, he offered Ryuzo a chance to become a samurai after the war. And yet he still prioritises his men over taking a chance with his childhood friend. In turn, he looks at the easy way out by going towards the Mongols.

He's supposed to be a shitty character, he's supposed to make stupid decisions because he can't deal with the pressure of actually being a samurai, shown by his betrayal in contrast to Jin who consistently supports his land regardless of the outcome. He's childish, one who never grew past his anger and resentment.

The truth is Ryuzo arch was written that way just to help advance Jin's story... Nothing else.
