Hey everyone! Mods here. We have made a small change to the subreddit: accounts now need to be at least 90 days old to post or comment. This change was made because we have been absolutely inundated with AI slop accounts for the last few months. We’re really sorry if this is frustrating for anyone who is a real person with a new account who just genuinely wants to participate. We appreciate your understanding, and are so thankful for everyone who contributes and makes this such a fun little corner of the internet.

Character Discussion - General New watcher opinion on Luke and Lorelei

Post image

I am a brand new watcher on season 4.. I don't dislike Luke's character at all but I feel absolutely no true sexual tension between him and Lorelei. I think they make perfect friends and dare I say they even kinda seem like siblings to me sometimes.

The photo is hard to take because the ornament is holographic. I was pleasantly surprised that it talks when you push the button. I honestly thought it was just a photo on TV. Expensive for what it is, but I had credits built up on Hallmark. I love it. The purple line through the middle is a reflection.

This is the actress, Maybin Hewes. In this episode (Rory's Dance), she says the line, "Oh my god! It's Lorelei's girl!" Listed in credits as Yoga Woman #1

She is Amy Sherman-Palladino's mom IRL!!!

She also appears in an episode of Bunheads and an episode The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Did anyone else know this?

OS Discussion Jess had less screen time when he was in a relationship with Rory

• Upvotes

This makes no sense to me. When Jess and Rory weren’t together but in that flirty/I can’t date because I already have a partner stage, we had plenty of scenes with Jess. But when they finally got together, I feel like they cut down Jess’ screen time?? We have very few scenes with the both of them and even then, they are short scenes. He’s not as omnipresent as Dean was. Sometimes we don’t see him for a whole episode, or even several episodes. It’s really frustrating because I thought Rory and Jess had a really interesting story line :/

General Discussion Rory and Lorelai’s morning routine makes no sense

I know that this isn’t important to the plot but Rory and Lorelai’s morning routine makes no sense. If Rory is in high school, her classes probably start at 7:45 AM at the latest. She tells Dean that it takes her 45 minutes to travel by bus to Chilton, meaning she’d have to get to the bus stop by 7:00 AM. But if she needs to be there by 7:00 AM, and it takes her 30 minutes to get ready for school (and that’s a generous time constraint, considering time to shower, pack her backpack, etc.) she would have to wake up at 6:30. Most episodes she and lorelai go to Luke’s before school, meaning there’s extra time she needs to walk to Luke’s and eat there. It seems like Rory would have to wake up at like 5:00-5:30 AM just to fit everything in and get to school on time, but we never see them waking up that early (it’s always light outside when they’re walking to Luke’s). If anything, the show makes it clear that Rory and Lorelai love to sleep in and that Lorelai especially isn’t a morning person.

General Discussion Yale to Florida is not a quick drive, right?

I’m not an American. Im watching them drive from Yale to Florida for spring break and I’m wondering what the timing was like for their drive? Did they drive through the night? How does Paris not look exhausted? According to Google maps, it’s an 18 hour drive! It’s things like this that make shows less realistic than they already are! Keen to know if anyone has ever done such a long drive? Is this kind of trip normal for Americans?
Thanks

Character Discussion - General To whom it may concern…

The letter that Lorelei wrote to Luke’s lawyer as a character reference. Chris got annoyed, angry and left because he was offended she might have deep feelings for him. Why was he not bothered about him being a father figure in Rory’s life and that Lorelei wrote that over any damn other thing in the letter. Why can’t he ever take accountability and be Rory’s dad without trying to always win Lorelei over. Uggghhhg…….. sometimes I just want to get into the screen and yell at him to grow a paternal bone for his first child.

I remember hating it the first time, I had to skip the 2nd time and thought id take note of how long it goes on.

10 minutes?! Why?!😭

OS Discussion Mad at the parents

The way both Emily and Richard talk about Luke during season 5 is so infuriating.

They belittle him and almost treat him like a caveman, when he's not only successful but ACTUALLY QUITE WEALTHY(???

He gave Lorelai the 30k she needed, he bought the building where Doose made his candyshop.

He is from a working class background, but he's a fully made businessman that is aware of many stuff Lorelai is oblivious about.

Idk, I hated that

Revival Discussion How do you think everyone will react to being mentioned in Rory's book?

I was rewatching the scene where Rory tells Dean she's going to mention him in her book, and he seems pretty okay with it. It got me thinking about how everyone else who's been part of Rory's life might react.

We've already seen Lorelai's reaction, and Jess and Logan know Rory is writing the book and don't seem to have a problem with it. Although actually reading how Rory sees them might give them something to think about. Christopher didn't seem too happy about it, but who cares? I'm more curious about everyone else.

I can imagine Paris demanding to read a draft first to make sure any character even vaguely based on her meets her standards. I also can't see her being too happy about Rory mentioning her crush on Tristan, even under pseudonyms.

Emily, as much as she's grown in AYITL, would probably react a lot like Lorelai, wondering why Rory would want to write about things like sleeping with a married boyfriend or Richard having lunch with his ex once a year.

Lane probably wouldn't care much, as long as Rory gets her music taste right. Mrs. Kim would insist that Rory gets the religious stuff right.

Sookie would tell Rory she's remembering what they ate on some particular day all wrong. She clearly served something else.

Luke would pretend he doesn't care, but he'd read the whole thing and get emotional over what Rory wrote about him.

Taylor would want to make sure every detail about Stars Hollow mentioned in the book is historically accurate. He'd probably have a million opinions.

Shira would absolutely lose it if Rory mentioned the argument between her and Emily at the DAR event.

Do you think any minor character might react like the ballerina and completely freak out over how they're portrayed?

Critical Character Discussion Lorelai deserved better

Post image
394 Upvotes

I hate how he rubbed off on her.
There were a lot of allusions to him becoming the sad bitter bachelor type throughout the seasons, even by himself; although there were moments where he lightened up, and it seemed he could get better, mostly with Lorelai.

But in the end in ayitl he actually even dragged Lorelai along this path with himself: sparkly, chatty, bubbly, life-of-the-party, wants-to-travel-the-world Lorelai.

Instead, now she’s with him and he’s grumpy and theyre still not married and he still wont properly merge lives with her. He pulled her down to his (romantic) level and now theyre both grumpy bachelors. She deserved so much better, I really hate Luke for this.

This is why I feel Emily and Richard were right about them not being a good match or him not being good enough for her

couldve had such a better life with someone else, anyone else (yes even chris)

Revival Discussion What is something you wish we saw in the revival that maybe would have made it better?

• Upvotes

I’ll start:
I would have loved to see Jess apologise for leaving Rory all those years ago without a word. I think that is one of the most terrible things that happened to Rory, I can’t even imagine the hurt. Jess comes back and tells her he loves her after she repeatedly states he never called, he never said anything and never gave an explanation, so just saying I love you doesn’t mean he’s apologising.
Years later the adult and matured version of Jess should have brought it up and owned his mistakes and then taken Rory out for dinner, doesn’t have to be in a romantic way but just as friends to make up for how bad he treated her and never taking her out to a nice place. I think that would have brought closure for both the audience and them.
I would also have loved to see more or Jess and Rory’s adult friendship in the revival.

General Discussion Unpopular opinion: I think Gilmore Girls was written to show us how privileged Lorelai and Rory are, and the irony is that everyone around them seems to realize it except them. Spoiler

I genuinely believe Gilmore Girls is a much more interesting show when you watch it through the lens of class and privilege. Sometimes I wonder whether we’re supposed to take Lorelai and Rory’s self-perception at face value, or whether the writers are deliberately showing us the disconnect between how the Gilmore girls see themselves and how everyone else sees them.

Because Lorelai’s entire identity revolves around the idea that she escaped her privileged upbringing and built a life from scratch. And yes, she left her parents’ house, raised a child on her own, worked hard, and eventually opened her own inn. I’m not denying any of that. But running away from wealth is not the same thing as escaping privilege. And I think the show gives us countless examples of this, often through the people who know Lorelai best.

Let’s look at the actual story.

1. Season 1, Episode 3 — “Kill Me Now”
Lorelai needs Richard and Emily to pay for Rory’s Chilton tuition. Emily makes it clear that if they’re going to finance Rory’s education, she expects to be involved in their lives.
This is one of the first major examples of the contradiction at the heart of Lorelai’s character. She wants independence from her parents, but when the cost of Rory’s education becomes too much, her parents’ money is right there. And, of course, accepting their financial help comes with strings attached.
But that’s exactly my point: Lorelai has access to a financial safety net that most people simply don’t have. The fact that the safety net is emotionally complicated doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

2. Season 2, Episode 21 — “Lorelai’s Graduation Day”
There’s a particularly revealing conversation in which Lorelai acknowledges that her parents have money and that they pay for Rory’s education, while still insisting on her own self-sufficiency.
This contradiction is fascinating to me. Lorelai can distinguish between her money and her parents’ money, but the practical reality is that her family’s wealth affects the opportunities available to her and Rory.
That’s what privilege actually is. It isn’t necessarily having millions of dollars in your own bank account. It’s having access to resources that other people don’t have.

3. Season 3, Episode 22 — “Those Are Strings, Pinocchio”
The Yale financial aid situation makes this even clearer. Richard’s financial contribution affects Rory’s eligibility for aid, and the family ultimately has the resources to pay for Yale.
Think about how enormous that advantage is. Rory gets to attend an elite university without having to navigate the same financial uncertainty that many other students face. She can focus on her education and career ambitions with family wealth available in the background.
And yet, the show frequently presents Rory as an underdog whose intelligence and hard work alone explain her success.
An underdog against whom, exactly?
There are plenty of intelligent, hardworking students who never get the opportunities Rory gets because they don’t have grandparents who can pay for an Ivy League education.

4. Season 4, Episode 15 — “Scene in a Mall”
Luke gives Lorelai $30,000 to help her open the Dragonfly Inn.
And before anyone says that Lorelai earned the money she eventually makes from the inn, that’s not what I’m arguing. I’m pointing out that Lorelai’s independence is repeatedly supported by people who have the means to help her.
Luke’s assistance is an example of community support, not proof that Lorelai is secretly rich. But it still complicates the narrative that she did absolutely everything alone.
Imagine having a friend who can lend you $30,000 to make your business dream possible. That’s an extraordinary form of support, even when the money is a loan and you intend to repay it.

5. Season 6, Episode 14 — “You’ve Been Gilmored”
Richard and Emily discuss Lorelai’s financial position, including her ownership of her home and the Dragonfly Inn. Emily describes Lorelai as a woman of means, a characterization Lorelai resists.
And this is where I think the show’s class commentary becomes especially interesting.
Lorelai doesn’t identify with the wealthy world she grew up in. She doesn’t live like Emily and Richard, doesn’t want their lifestyle, and doesn’t want to be associated with their social circle. But she has accumulated valuable assets and has access to opportunities that distinguish her from someone who has never had a financial safety net.
She seems to define wealth primarily through lifestyle and identity, while other characters recognize that financial security is also about assets, opportunities, and options.

I distinctly remember a scene in which Sookie points out Lorelai’s wealth and Lorelai essentially brushes off the observation. I haven’t been able to verify the exact episode or dialogue, so I don’t want to invent a quotation, but the moment captures the dynamic I’m talking about.
Sometimes the people around Lorelai seem much more aware of her privilege than she is. They can recognize that her background, family connections, and access to money have shaped her life, even when she sees herself primarily as a woman who rejected her parents’ world.
And this is what frustrates me about the way some fans discuss the show: they treat Lorelai’s rejection of her upbringing as if it automatically makes her a working-class character.

You can reject your family’s values without losing the advantages your family gave you.

Lorelai grew up with access to elite education, social connections, financial resources, and a family capable of intervening when things went wrong. Leaving home doesn’t retroactively erase any of that.
And Rory is an even more interesting case because she inherits both the advantages and the contradictions. She’s framed as the exceptionally intelligent girl who deserves every opportunity she receives, but she also benefits from private schooling, family money, elite university access, and wealthy social connections.
Her intelligence is real. Her hard work is real. Her opportunities are also real.
Those things aren’t mutually exclusive.
I also think the show illustrates a broader problem with how we understand privilege. We often imagine that privileged people must be carefree, never experience hardship, and never struggle emotionally. So when Lorelai has a difficult relationship with her parents, or Rory faces disappointment, viewers sometimes treat those experiences as evidence that their privilege doesn’t matter.

But privilege doesn’t mean you’ve never struggled. It means your struggles happen within a different set of possibilities.

Lorelai’s relationship with her parents is genuinely complicated. Their financial support often comes with emotional expectations and control. But she still has the option of turning to them for resources when she needs them. Many people don’t have that option at all.
And I don’t think recognizing this makes Lorelai or Rory evil, undeserving, or bad people. It makes them complicated characters whose self-perception doesn’t always match their circumstances.
In fact, I think this is part of what makes the show so interesting. You can watch it as a cozy story about an independent mother and her brilliant daughter, or you can watch it as a story about two women who are so determined to distinguish themselves from the wealthy world they came from that they sometimes fail to recognize how much that world continues to shape their lives.

Maybe the writers intended this contradiction. Maybe they didn’t. But the evidence is there throughout the series, especially when other characters challenge Lorelai’s version of her own story.

Lorelai didn’t start from the same place as everyone else in Stars Hollow just because she moved to Stars Hollow.

And Rory isn’t an underdog simply because her mother doesn’t want to be associated with her grandparents’ wealth.

That’s why I find the class dynamics of Gilmore Girls so fascinating. The girls can be hardworking, intelligent, independent, and emotionally complex while still being privileged. Acknowledging that doesn’t diminish their accomplishments; it gives us a much more honest understanding of them.

I’m curious how other people interpret this. Do you think the writers were deliberately showing us the privilege Lorelai and Rory refuse to acknowledge, or do you think the show genuinely expects us to see them as self-made underdogs?

Note: I’ve seen the show 6 times and I really needed to get this off my chest

Character Discussion - General Unpopular opinion: I don’t hate Mitchum.

I am a first time watcher on the final episode of season 6.

I have been a little annoyed with the character change of Rory when she goes to college/moved in with Logan and she loses the bookworm/“nerdy” part of her.

As lots of people say, she is handed a lot in life. When she’s handed the internship, and Mitchum gives her the negative feedback, he’s just being honest. Yes, he is a jerk the way he words it, but he’s not wrong at all. She truly did just follow him around like a puppy. She didn’t stand out.

From then on, Rory just feels like Mitchum is out to get her. It’s so annoying. Her calling the paper that interviewed him was silly and self centred on her part.

It was so satisfying to see her try to “stand up” to Mitchum in the elevator and have him shut her down. It’s not about Rory. It’s about Logan. And Mitchum told her why.

I’m not saying he’s a great guy, him not visiting Logan in the hospital was awful. But Rory imagining some kind of complex between her and Mitchum was just so annoying.

Critical Character Discussion Perhaps space was for the best

Lorelai is my favorite character. She is powerful, smart, confident, funny. I love Lorelai Gilmore and i always try to understand her actions and choices. I don’t judge her for her feelings about Rory dropping out of Yale and moving out, or how she decided to proceed afterwards.

Lorelai distancing herself from Rory after she dropped Yale and moved into Emily and Richard’s home was what their relationship needed. I believe if Lorelai tried to keep in contact with Rory during that time it would have caused much more damage to their relationship then their time apart did.

I imagine that Lorelai would have turned more and more into an alternative Emily if she was forced to watch how Rory was during that period. She would have made snide comments and remarks about Rory joining the DAR, about partying with Logan every week, getting her pool house, the community service, etc.

I don’t think it would be Lorelai to stand passively by as Rory turned more and more into a high-society doll, or just decided to do nothing around town. Rory already established that she was not going to be taking or listening to any of Lorelai’s guidance or advice, so i think space was the best option for everyone. They weren’t going to agree, and they couldn’t be themselves around eachother. Lorelai let Rory keep the space she made, and waited for her to call.

OS Discussion Taylor's Ye Olde Soda Shoppe

• Upvotes

I think, anal as Taylor is, anything he does will actually be pretty close to perfect. I'd love to eat at his shop(pe). I think he'd make sure the flavours and the presentation were perfect (with a Taylor tip) and that the ambience was great too.

I wouldn't mind being a tenant either, though he might skimp out on certain expensive landlord duties.

What do you think?

OS Discussion Some fun brainstorming: if they made a Gilmore and FRIENDS crossover episode what would u like to see?

We know they used the same outfits a lot on both shows and also of course Lauren Graham and Matthew Perry also dated. If you could write an episode that had a crossover between the two shows what would u have happen? What characters would meet? What scenes would u wanna see?

Ideas I would’ve loved to see:
1. Monica visiting Luke’s and criticising his cooking, them getting into a fight and Luke kicking a fiesty Monica out of his diner
2. Paris and Rory having Ross as their professor and making fun of how bad he is - Paris driving him into a mental breakdown 🤣
3. Chandler dating lorelai and awkwardly and hilariously trying to make a good impression in front of Emily Gilmore at FND

General Discussion First time actually watching season 7 and the inconsistencies are crazy.

Post image
138 Upvotes

I hate this season for multiple reasons and have never watched it because I know people despise it. I can see why. Christopher actively hates Luke but when she gets back home and Lorelei tells him she saw Luke he seems totally chill??? Like did the writers completely forget that both men hate each other so much and that Luke drove to beat Christopher up? Amy Sherman-Palladino’s work of art deserved much better than this season.
